I’m a creative ,curious and exploring person. I’ve decided to study architecture because of the combination of artistic/creative expression and production of a phenomenon that’s used every day, namely lived spaces.

Architecture for me is about creating a spatial experience.

Apart from studying architecture I’m curious about many other things. I feed my curiosity of other cultures by traveling with AEGEE to other European countries and holidays elsewhere . In my opinion to be able to say something about your own environment/situation you need to know about others to compare.

Being connected with nature is really important to me and that’s why I’m active at Scouting and All terrain. I do a lot of outdoor activities with both associations. At scouting I practice my organizational skills and make programs for kids every week to discover the world and gain knowledge.

ProjectsIn this chapter I will enumerate all the designs I made for the projects I participated in during my study. This chapter starts with my first project and ends with my last project which is my first master project. This chapter shows the graduate improvement of my design skills. I’ve learned how to make more spacious designs rather than just an exterior sculpture which is filled with spaces. I’ve also developed my drawing and presenting skills, and I’ve learned to look at all aspects involved with designing a building.

badchelor, year 1 semester 1Landscape in a box

At the former industrial area of Phillips is a building called Klokgebouw (Clock building). It got its name after a big clock placed on a big glass box on top of the roof. In this box we had to design a place for a think tank to work for a week until the next groups arrives. Both work and sleep places were needed and there also had to be recreational facilities.

The box is really light because all the walls are made of glass, but you can’t look through the glass.

This means that the people living inside are completely isolated and need an inspirational surrounding inside the box to work and live.

Glass stones together with a steel construction form a shell with an industrial feel. I wanted to create something of a natural feel inside as a contrast.

I thought every person needed their own private space to sleep and retreat to be alone.I wanted to make small modules that would stand freely in the open space to preserve the open space. I tried many different things and the end result were modules shaped like rocks. Inspired by this I made a rock landscape inside the box. In one corner there is a rock-climbing wall for recreational purpose. Other places can be climbed freely to find a place to sit and read.

There was already a platform in the box. The working area is on this platform. In this open area it is possible to place the tables in a group to work together and inspire each other or place your table against a wall to work alone. The platform is raised so there is a more comfortable height between floor and ceiling. From the platform you can view the rocky landscape. A pathway gives access to the working platform.

badchelor, year 1 semester 2Dommel living

The design challenge was to design 5000m2 of housing and 1000m2 of other functions near the Dommel (a river streaming through Eindhoven). In our master plan we decide to make an oasis that would be a place for people working in the surrounding buildings to rest and have lunch and recreational space for people living there. By putting a building over the Dommel next to the bridge, a closed area is formed that’s protected from traffic-noise from the main road passing the area.

The height of the existing buildings are really different on either side. To connect these heights I designed a building that is sloped. The façade of the building on the park side was made into a softer border by pushing blocks back and forward in order to get a less flat façade which also provided the outdoor spaces for the apartments.

badchelor, year 1 semester 2Culture expo

A big old industrial area near the Maas in Maastricht had to be redeveloped. Maastricht is trying to use the benefits of the Maas for recreational purpose. There are terraces and trails to make the Maas more part of the city. With Maastricht as Capital of culture in 2018 in our mind we had to design a freestanding pavilion with an information center, an exposition room of 100m2, a café of 100m2, an auditorium/ cinema, two conference rooms, an office for the organization and additional facilities. 65% of the 8000m2 plot had to be public space and there also had to be 6600 m2 of homes in separate buildings. To come up with a design for this area I read a book (Zo doe je dat : grondbeginselen van vormgeving / door J.J. Beljon). Based on my readings, I did form finding research for the square and the pavilion. I chose a few theme’s from the book.

I used traces and tracks for the square design. The square was big and open and had to be sized down by dividing it in parts. The pavilion as center, I decided to draw circles around the pavilion. Inspired by traces and marks people leave I started to design. Tracks are often seen where many people walked of trail to cut off. Or wear and tear by long-term use. I wanted that the traces would appear in a few years. If people could walk ad random around the square there wouldn’t appear traces because everyone takes another route. In order to let people take the same route, I had to create limited access from one ring to the next ring.

For the design of the pavilion I used the themes Meet and penetrate and also Wrap and fumble. The pavilion had to be a place for people to meet or see art and culture. Shapes can also meet. I used this to make a composition of geometric shapes; they meet a pyramid that’s in the middle. The pyramid penetrates the roof and sticks out. Through this glass pyramid light comes in the central area. A fumbled roof is wrapped around the geometric shapes. Wrapping also means disguising the object that are wrapped. This is even stronger while the fumbled roof doesn’t show which shapes are underneath.

badchelor, year 2 semester 2Palace for genarations

At museum square in Amsterdam there are lots of big museums and monumental buildings. On this square we had to design a palace for the six generations. Each generation should get their own area in this building. Because of the combination of modern and classical palaces I’ve decided to make a modern palace. The general approach at this square is that new building are built in a contemporary style. even attachments like the ‘bathtub’ of the City museum of Amsterdam.

Palaces often have some kind of symmetry in them with a centered entrance. I decide to do it differently. The main entrance is at the corner at the streets. But from the square you can enter a deck and enter the building as well. This axis I used to design the building. I stacked volumes for the generations stair wise on each other at the other corners. The stacking creates tow voids. The one above the entrance is closed by glass to provide an area where the generations can meet. On the other side the void is an outdoor deck which can serve as a stage or can be used for outdoor activities.

10-01-2014bouwblok in context

badchelor, year 3 semester 1Residences Antwerpen

The building block in Antwerp was never fully closed. Half of it was always filled with a big building. While the big building standing there was demolished, we had to make a new design for this building block. In our new design the inner part of the building block is public. This area is part of a route from the city to the harbor. Inside the building block we place a new building and a nice square to stay. To mark the route into the building block I designed a building that functioned as a gateway. This building at the corner had to mark the entrance of the building block.

This block consisted of two parts. The lower part were separated row houses accessed from the street. These separate houses got their own color to make the difference clear. On top of these houses there are apartments, they rest as a crown on top of the houses below.

badchelor, year 3 semester 2Apartment dune

Housing/ hotel project VlissingenAt the end of the boulevard of Vlissingen there was a big open plot. The assignment was to design 160 apartments of different sizes. These apartments had to be spilt of so they could be rented to tourist during the summer. As the building height differentiates along the boulevard, the building should have different heights at this plot as well. Also a connection with the city had to be made. Because the building was one of the last ones at the boulevard, that after that transforms in to dunes, I decided to design the building as big dune where people have their apartment. Other functions I added are a swimming pool, library and a restaurant.

badchelor, year 4 semester 1Creative quater

This project is carried out in a team of three architecture students with a real estate, structural engineer and building physics student. For the first few weeks we researched the possibilities of the plot on each discipline. After a careful analysis a plan was written so we could start designing. The old factory is a monument which had to be kept. We also wanted to create a landmark, while the main road is getting in to the inner city at this spot.

Along the river (Dieze) there is a route for cycling and walking which leads to the outskirts of the city where big conference halls are and will finally get to the nature surrounding Den Bosch. We made a passage of the old factory to connect the route with the inner city. We placed separate volumes in the factory along the route. In these volumes are small shop and offices for starting companies. This solution was chosen to preserve the character of the building and also meet the building physics requirements. We chose to design one big volume consisting of three parts. At one end of the factory we let our new building cantilevering over the factory to emphasize the entrance of the area and the continuation of the route. This parts houses the hotel. The other arm of the volume has double story apartments in it. In the tower are more apartments. These apartments have nice views on two sides of the old fortress, the city, the river or the square.

badchelor, year 4 semester 1Discipline

In my discipline I wanted to explore the possibilities of creating floorplans that differ from the ordinary floorplans we designed. with rooms divided by walls. I chose a few architects as example and I tried to use their way of designing space to design the apartments in the tower. The architects I used as inspiration are Adolf Loos, Rietveld, Van Aken architecten and the couple Hartsuyker. The floorplans based on the designs I analyzed are shown next.

Characteristics of Adolf Loos designs are the height differences to make a spatial experiences and sequence of spaces.

The Rietveld Schöder house exist of an open space which can be divided by sliding walls. With these walls many variations of space can be created.

Page 23: Portfolio jeroen bekkers 11-05-2016

Discipline

Van Aken Architecten designed a module which has all the function in it. Based on this typology a design is made.

The Hartsuyker couple design the so called the walk around livings. The residences don’t have a corridor. The service spaces are placed in the center with the rooms around it. The circulation goes from room to room.

Garden

Master, year 4 semester 2Shop and Wellness

A lot of buildings nowadays consist of a structure with a glass skin around it. The only reason that the façade is divided in smaller pieces are the limits of production. The project was called Craftsmanship and the fragile façade of the city. During this project we researched and analyzed buildings from the art nouveau period and before to find out what the qualities of these façades are. With this knowledge we had to bring the craftsmanship and fragility back into our design. The location had to be in the city center of The Hague and a shop had to combined with several other functions.

This long and narrow plot gave me a challenge. I didn’t choose the obvious way to split it halfway, but I’ve spilt the plot along the length. A big structural wall divides the shop and the wellness. Volumes puncturing the wall consists of sauna’s and baths. They are accessible from the wellness. These boxes have translucent glass that provide a fragile border between the shopping people and the people relaxing in the sauna’s and baths. In the middle of the shop there is a grand staircase that leads to a lunch café with a nice view to the garden. This garden, which is accessible from the other street, provides the entrance of the wellness. A fragile skin runs from the front façade across the roof to the back façade in order to provide enough light in the spaces.

Master, year 5 semester 2Motion, dance on the edge

the task was to design a dance theathre in Helsinki. The desing concepts were motion and edge. The first concept evolves around movement, this appears in the building in many ways. Visitors move along a route through the building to the main auditorium. The character of spaces will change. Also the relation with the city will change. That involves the second concept edge. The building is placed on the edge between land and water, urban city and industry. The grand hall and restaurant are tied to the small bay and urban city, production spaces to the industrial side, and foyer and rehearsal spaces to the water of the harbor and in the center the main auditorium. So these borders of the context are present in the building.

Architecture and housing

Living is something we all do, but the way we live in our houses is different to that of a state, neighborhood, family or even family members. Living seems an obvious and clear task, but it’s not the same for everyone. Culture, habits, but also the architecture plays a role in the way we live in our homes. During this course we analyzed a typical dike house and the people living in it.

We shed a light on the following aspects: village and neighborhood, building changes over time, function arrangement in the house, spatial usage, routes in the house, light and shadow in and around the house, artificial lights, entertainments systems, height differences and connection/ interaction with the outside world.

All these aspects influence the spatial usage over time for specific persons living in the house. This can be seen in the floorplans on the next page.

An interesting fact is that the original living room isn’t used anymore because it’s not insulated well, and people can easily look in from the street. So a way smaller and cozier living room is built adjacent to the kitchen facing the garden. That makes an entire floor almost unused.

Architectural engineering

With this course we had to choose a building with an interesting detail which we would further analyze. We chose the school building of the ensemble Bloemershof in Dieren designed by the office Bekkering Adams. First we went to the building and looked at it on the inside and outside and made some sketches to figure out how the façade was made. Then we started drawing the details of the façade as we thought they had to be. Later we contacted the architects to get the original details of the building. With details taken from other parts of the building we checked ours. We chose a corner with a 120 degree angle where all the materials used in the building got together. Of this section of the building we made a 1:1 model. By building a part ourselves we got a better understanding how it was build and above all how the details of the building were design and carried out.

Art and architecture

It’s sometimes hard to tell which aspects of a building make it a good building and a good architectural, design. This courses aimed to practice and search for methods to analyze art and architecture. This was done with art because there are some similarities between the two, but art can be more abstract and therefore liberated us from our daily thinking of architecture. We found three artworks that gave a divine uplifting feeling. These artworks are the music track K ta made by Andy More, Iperboreo by Fabrizio corneli And Notre Dame du Haut designed by Le corbusier was our architectural object. We analyzed the artwork on motion/movement, light, color, light/dark and rhythm. We searched to the common aspects that give that uplifting feeling.

Typology of living

This course was about analyzing housing in Amsterdam. We did research the place the houses had in the city and neighborhood. We started with a historical analyses of the neighborhood plan. We analyzed the city-plan characteristics and the architectural characteristics. We didn’t only analyze the neighborhood and architecture typologically but also the social aspects; what kind of traces are visible in the city fabric of people using the public spaces.

The analysis consisted of four levels. The first level was the location within the city and the demographics compared to the other part of Amsterdam.

The second level was about the neighborhood; how it was build, the parceling and in what way the streets an buildings were arranged. We analyzed rhythm and order, typology and form of the buildings in the neighborhood.

The third level was about a particular building block in the neighborhood. Aspects as parceling, building type, height, rhythm, symmetry and exceptions were also analyzed.

The fourth and last level was about one single residence of the building block. Aspects as floorplan entrance, façade, openings, symmetry, rhythm and exceptions were analyzed.

During this course we went to the architectural archive of the Netherlands and we could hold the original drawing made by the architect which was really nice. We presented all our findings in graphs, maps, schemes and drawings.

Spaces in natureFor this course we went solitary to the forest to study embodied experiences. the focus lies on the muscular level but especially on the mental and emotinal response to the space. bases on these experiences were models made to express the feelings and mental state that were present at those moments.

Drawing courses

I followed several drawing courses. One of those was expression of space. During these courses I have practiced drawing spaces in perspective and isometric. Also developed different techniques to get a creative process going and exploring ways to filter and show main aspects of a design.

Philosophy

Philosophy was an important course for me. It shed light on definitions of esthetics, ethic and society related to architecture. The most important thing that this course has taught me is that esthetics is expedient use of an element instead of just beauty.

Together with two other student we analyzed a project. We discussed some philosophical terms. The neighborhood we used, was a deprived area and was redesigned. The new design had the feel of a south European/ Middle Eastern architecture. The architecture is clear and understandable, the esthetic elements have a function. The painted houses made the neighborhood an colorful and vibrant area. Without these colors they would be boring modern blocks of social housing. One big question for me is: whether this non-Dutch architecture was the right approach?
