THE ‘FEAST’ IS A DINING EXPERIENCE DESIGN PROJECT BASED ON MULTI-SENSORY INTERACTION

The ‘FEAST’ was my final project for the MA Design, Critical Practice at Goldsmiths. The brief was to design a multi-sensory dining experience. I reassessed the everyday ritual of dining by recreating the objects usually associated with this experience, such as food, cutlery and plates. After dining, each partictpants was given a kit of cultural probes that included; instuctions, a disposable camera and an envelope to collect non-verbal languages, like pictures and materials, to explain what feelings they had from the “FEAST” experience.

The ‘FEAST’ is based around a set of extemporal experiments with materiality, creating a dialogue between unexpected object affordance, and the primal human. Since these experiments

‘Although disgust seems to represent pure aversion, disgusting object can also fasinate - and even attractive.’

(Korsmyer: 2011)

are based on the familiar and necessary ritual of eating, we can challenge a priori information we bring to the table.

Eating can be disgusting, which contrasts with the contemporary approach to dining as more of a pleasant process. By applying an aesthetic of disgust, we engage with a primitive emotion, embracing its visceral nature and achieving a deeper interaction. ‘FEAST’ is a way to examine this ritual through critical objects in order to create a new emotional connection to what we eat, and how we eat it.

THE ‘A.E.I.O.U.’ IS A SEXY INTSTRUMENT WHICH HAS A MULTI-SENSORY INTERFACE BASED ON TOUCH SENSORS.

GROUP WORK

‘A.E.I.O.U.’ is a sexy instrument which has a multi-sensory interface based on touch sensors. It moans ‘[a]-[e]-[i]-[o]-[u]’ when audience members touch, pet, prick or tickle it. I designed the interface so that it would play different sounds when different patterns on it are interacted with. For example, small dots make a cute high-toned sound, while on the other hand, the big spot makes an indecent low-toned sound.

‘A.E.I.O.U.’ is a cute, adorable, but sexy life-size hairy doll. The colourful and soft hairy look is lovely enough, but the size and the sound can be awful. Also, the piece’s controversial presentation of gender fluid sounds additionally generates paradoxical emotions. This was inspired by my own experience of having different aspects of myself that sometimes clash internally, making arguments with each other inside of my mind. However, I physically exist as one body in the world regardless.

Therefore, I designed one lump which represents this, and holds different emotions inside of it. For me, the vibrant bright colour, and soft feeling of fur reminds me of childhood, however the embedded sexual moaning sound breaks with this emotion, presenting something more grown up. How the audience interact with ‘A.E.I.O.U.’ and what they would experience depends on them individually. All components (conductive wire, arduino, sensors, speakers, computer) were covered by soft fur with a wooden structure which holds the fur in place. I also sewed conductive thread into the textile with a spacing of 4cm (2x6), which helped to create a soft texture as well as a well-made, responsive circuit.

Translucent balloons, a red light and lace curtains were used to enhancing sexual atmosphere. It was exhibited at “NEO” Digital Media Design show in Seoul, Republic of Korea.

‘THE SIRENS OF TITAN’ IS A NOVEL BY KURT VONNEGUT.I DESIGNED SERIES OF WORKS WHICH ARE INSPIRED BY THE NOVEL, SINCE I WAS VERY IMPRESSED BY THIS BOOK. I USED VARIOUS KINDS OF MEDIA TO DELIVER CONTENTS OF THE BOOK.

SERIES OF WORKS

The first method is ‘interactive story telling’. This work has re-analized the story of the book and expressed the story more interactively. Firstly, I built a structure out of the story to figure out relations between each of the charactors, and put them into a few situations. It has five different endings with various options of choice, and so lets users play by choosing different answers. Unlike traditional books, this book allows readers to follow one story which is formed based on their choices, and as such my work enables people to uniquely interact with the stories.

The intention here is also to let users experience the book with synesthesia (touching, looking, hearing). When users choose a story, they are required to touch a silicone button, which has jelly like texture. Once this is done, a light sensor in the silicone button recognises users’ choices. Geared motors and LED lights are embedded inside the silicone button, giving the sense and appearance that it is alive. This feature of the silicone button is influenced by various aspects of the story chosen, such as the character called ‘Harmonium’ in ‘The Sirens of Titan’.

In ‘The Sirens of Titan’, Harmoniums eat sound, which increases their numbers. So to reflect this, I decided to use ‘projection mapping’ as my third method. This projection was directed onto a half sphere which had the appearance of a planet. It began by looking like some kind of amoeba, and developed to become ever more complex as the volume of sound was turned up, creating fractal formations.

The second method used is ‘illustration’. I designed these illustrations for an e-book platform and as such these can be interacted with by users touching a screen (where these illustrations will respond by making sounds and movements). To illustrate the scenes of the book, I used ‘paper art’ as the primary stylistic form so that each illstration could describes a scene in the story.

In order to achieve this effect, I took photos of friends, who were wearing costumes that I had constructed out of paper for them. I then printed these out on hard board paper, cut them out, and drew some backgrounds to accompany these ‘paper dolls’ (my friends). I put these two images together to give the impression that these ‘paper dolls’ were hanging out in a surrealistic world.

OPlanet i-101Someone in the galaxy might love me-2014

3months

‘Planet i-101(Someone in the galaxy might love me)’ is a series of work; illustration, typography and VMD. I had feeling that someone up in the sky might be watching me always, as if I’m being observed and I’m aware of the gaze. It feels that there may be some sort of planet where there is another kind of life that always sees me; planet ‘i-101’.

I used various media, and materials to describe the concept and mood of planet ’i-101’. For example, I used an eye on a painted blue bat (I call it a life), which constatly gazes at the audience. The blue colour is thermochromic pigment, and when audience members are around, or touch the bat, it changes its colour into the same as that of the other objects around it, and so it can hide itself by camouflaging itself to the audience.

‘PLANET I-101(SOMEONE IN THE GALAXY MIGHT LOVE ME)’ IS A SERIES OF WORK;
