What is “The 3rd place”?
The term was coined by Ray Oldenburg in his book, “The Great Good Place,” 1999.
1st Place = The Home
2nd Place = Work or School
3rd Place = In the Community
Hallmarks of a true "third place": Informal Public Gathering Place (accessible to everyone), Voluntary, Community/Urban, Free or Inexpensive, Interactive, Happily Anticipated, Democratic (lack or focal point or hierarchy), and Frequented.

How to make a gel medium transfer?
• Choose an image that has good contrast (strongly defined shapes, blacks and whites)
• Size or manipulate the image if needed.• Print using laser (black and white or colored)• Cover the surface (where you want to transfer the image)
with gel medium.• Place the image (print side down) on the gel medium• Burnish using a hard, smooth object.• Wet your finger and rub on the back of the image• Allow the papers and gel to fully dry (use hairdryer to speed
up drying time)• THEN. Wet your finger and rub on the back of the printed
image to remove the paper and reveal the image. Let dry between rubbing sessions to avoid tears (may need to repeat the process multiple times)
• COVER the transfer with gel medium and allow to fully dry before layering another image.
How to make a packing tape transfer?
• Find an image (in a magazine or book)• Carefully cover with packing tape (overlap strips if
needed)• Use a baren to burnish the surface of the tape• Soak the image + tape in water for 5 minutes• Scratch the back of the paper then rub with your
fingers to remove the paper• Once your image is revealed you may use sand paper
or a Brillo pad to make the image more transparent• Apply the image to your final design- adhere with a
layer of gel mediumResources:
