Purpose: art exhibition DekadensProgramme: Exhbition in Dunkers Kulturhus, HelsingborgLocation: Helsingborg, Sweden
The Dekadens exhibition at Dunkers Kulturhus has it starting point in ‘the Rake’s progress’ by William Hogarth. Accompanied by the work of David Hockney, Paula Rego, Nathalie Djur-berg, Jockum Nordström and Gun-nar Krantz, the exhibition focuses on wealth, betrayal, gambling, women, poverty, drugs, prison and death. Rather than just showing art in a naked white room, each room at Dekadens creates an ambience around the artwork to make it even stronger. To achieve those ambiences, a large variety of materials is used: white tiles, black rubber strips, curtains, red rococo wallpaper etc

Purpose: New park in Southern MalmöProgramme: Walkway, benches, outlook tower, bathouseLocation: Malmö, Sweden
The basis for a new park in Malmö was an old Roman palisade found there. Lindvall A & D was asked to design a new park around it, together with landscape architects from the city of Malmö. The park elements consisted of walkways, benches, an outlook tower, bathouses, wastebins and an informa-tion point.

Lindvall A & D is mainly active in the field of small-scale architecture, from villas till furniture. A lot of the furniture is done for companies like Skandiform and Ballingslöv, and concerns bathroom furniture, kitchen, chairs and other of-fice supplies. The villas are mainly newly built, al-though some of them are renovations.Often they’re supplied with specially designed furniture.

In the proximity of Bratislava, a new district will house hundreds of new villas and several supporting functions. like a shopping mall and recreation. Our proposal consisted of one overlaying structure, in which all villas and other functions will be part of. Several hous-ing types will fulfill the needs of the future inhabitants of this new district.

CONFERENCE HALL VIEW
Structure:Structurally the building relies on a simple concrete structure where 2 main cores insure a lot of the stability in the center aided by a column system towards the periphery. The cantilevers are therefore reduced to strict necessary. This system can be further studied and refined in design development.

The competition for a new House of Arts and Culture in Beirut, Libanon would be the first step to showcase art on a big-ger level, it would channelise current art streams in Beirut. Two big performance halls and exhibition spaces would be the basis for the cultural centre, its stacking clearly visible from the outside.

JDS Architects was invited to join a competition for the design of the Belgian pavillion on the World Expo in Shanghai. I was involved in the first phase of the design.
Furthermore, I was involved in a profile yearbook, consisting of all JDS projects done in 2008.

Urban intervention My graduation project is about the Hochschule-district in Zürich, Switzer-land. In this campus area, both the ETH and the university of Zurich do have their main buildings.Tied up between the old city centre and the city campus, this new guest-house for exchange students and visiting professors will function as the new link between those two important zones within the city of Zürich. The city campus still has the grandeur of the olden days, with its classic main build-ing on top of the plateau, serving as ‘city crowns’ and display the importance of both universities to its surroundings. On the foot of the hill, the old city is clearly recognizable with its dense and irregular fabric. In between, the hill can be considered as a battle field between city and campus. In times just after the construction of the main buildings of ETH and UZH, the slope was left empty. Later, buildings erected on this slope cloud the relationship between the city campus and the old city. Nowadays, the buildings on the slope are merged into the university campus due to the university’s desire to expanding and are simply bought up by the universities. Due to the difference in height, several stairs and a cable car connection were constructed to conquer this differ-ence, still serving today as the main pedestrian connection between city and campus. The Sempersteig is one of this stairways running up. Flanked by a university building (camouflaged in an old house) on the left and a high school on the right, the stair bridges a differ-ence in height of 16 metres, leading directly to the entrance of the UZH’s main building.
Plans to condense the campus and to look for better connections with its sur-roundings resulted in an urban master plan by prof. Girot. The introduced key element was a green carpet which stretched the new campus like the clas-sic campus model; solitary buildings on a green plane, but thereby carefully avoiding collision with the boundaries and with a condensing in the heart of the campus. My intervention proposes a more pragmatic attitude towards the campus and its boundaries, introducing mediation between campus and city. Strenghten social cohesionMany exchange students and visiting professors do have a active social life when they are abroad. To strengthen the social cohesion within the guest-house, extra programme is added in or-der to achieve it. Added social functions are; squashcourt, games room, kitchen, swimming pool, childrens’ play room and roof terrace. By mixing these func-tions throughout the building and to-wards private rooms and appartments, new relations are created, sometimes confronting, sometimes unexpected.

The sea offers open views of the horizon, but more importantly, mooringand (un)loading ships requires a straight quay. This logic also applies to buildingsin functioning harbours: Long façades along the quay separated from the waterby the necessary land-bound infrastructure. So far, this minimal strategy of rationalism has worked for Nordhavnen and its result can be seen throughout the area.Besides these areas of private, economical considerations, Copenhagen has greatpublic spaces along the water. The Lakes, the inner-city water fronts and many other banks offer the possibility of recreational activities such as leisurely walks and swims. However, this public space compromises the connection between the water and buildings along it: They will always be “buildings along a public space” rather than “buildings directly at the water.” Obviously, people living here enjoy magnificent views of the water, but lack private access to it. Mayor house Rotterdam
Purpose: competitionProgramme: housing for the mayor of RotterdamLocation: Rotterdam, NetherlandsCollaborator: Gert Kwekkeboom
The new house for the mayor of Rotterdam is located at the Westerkade. This site can be seen as a mediator between the old and the new part of Rotterdam, with visual connections to the old houses all around the Veerhaven and the new icons of Rotterdam, like the Erasmusbridge and Montevideo. The old harbour can be seen as well, where Rotterdam owes its reputation for. The centre is in the site’s surroundings as well and is therefore an ideal location for the mayor’s house. To exploit the potential of the site to its maximum, the mayor’s house is orientated perpendicular to the quay and the pier alongside the building offers maximum contact between land and water. The elongated high volume and its orientation offer a big contact surface with its surroundings; both side façades offer a view on the life line of the city; the Maas river. Although its big volume, the building is still modest. The somewhat heavy orthogonal volume is refined through slicing the sides of the volume, thereby marking the entrance of the pier. This pier is publicly accessible, so the mayor’s house will not be an isolated fortress for the inhabitants of Rotterdam. On the roof, the house has a private outside living area as well.The mayor’s house is divided in a living part and an official part. The lower part of the building houses the official part, where mainly guest are welcomed and where work areas can be found. This part emphasizes its relationship with its surroundings; the pier and the stairs. The stairs inside is a good location to exhibit given presents and art. A couple of storey’s further away from the pier, we find the more intimate house for the mayor and his family. From the roof garden, the family can enjoy the sun,
the wind and the view. To structure the internal routing and to frame the view, parts of the façade are open and parts are closed. To prevent people to look into the house on some points, the outside is designed as a refined network of willow branches. This voile eases the scale of the building with its delicacy and tactility. At some places, the underlying EPDM-foil can be seen.

FacadesStudies for cladding
Traditional watchtowers are only focussing on the actual plane where you can look on the surroundings, the landscape. They are organized to bridge the distance from the ground level to the platform as soon as possible. This proposal for a watchtower nearby Hilver-sum is orientated much more horizontal and is not only focussing on the target of the climb, but also on the climb itself. This climb will become a tour of discov-ery with unexpected moments. The stair moves different then expected. He does not go regular to the top and does not always touch the outside. Sometimes the stair turns and gives you another sight than you expected. The route also offers a couple of points of rest, to give the climber the opportunity to enjoy the landscape. We would like to think of the appereance as a sculpture in the land-scape. It becomes clear that the tower is a human-made object within the freak-ishness of nature. The skin does not only serves a functional purpose, it’s incision gives the tower an extra aesthetical quality. A part of the cutted pieces can serve on the ground as a shelter.

(Architecture) Photography forces you to take a particular point of view and makes you therefore think how a building should be representated on the photo by its composition and appearance.During my study I made a lot of architectural photographs, here a short range of photos I consider as being a good pho-tograph.
After Japanese examples, extreme urban sitting is about creating strange situations by sitting on strange loca-tions. Therefore I made some pictures of a friend of mine, sitting on different locations in the city of Eindhoven.
Eindhoven Extreme Urban Sitting
The CHEPOS is the quarterly magazine (in Dutch) from CHEOPS, study union from the Faculty of Architecture, Build-ing and Planning at the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven. Every edition has it’s own theme, for which the editors are looking for internal and external writers to put together the magazine. The layout is done by the students who are in the board of editors. I have been editor-in-chief of number 10, which was about the new trend in Dutch architecture; private collective customer assocation and its influence on architecture / urbanity.
