CONCEPTI believe fashion can do better. We can design smarter and be more mindful in production and consumption. Sustainability matters because the planet matters. People matter. ROOT creates garments for zero waste. We believe in educating the consumer on the true story behind their clothes. To make certain this collection is as sustainable as possible I did extensive research and then developed a brand sustainability model that focuses on ECO, ETHICAL, and LOCAL.

BRAND STATEMENTROOT is a boutique brand that is good for people and the planet. Sustainability and style are of equal importance in this line of bold prints and modern silhouettes. This collection has the goal of zero waste utilizing digital printing and naturally colored cellulose and protein fibers. All production is done in the United States to reduce the carbon footprint of shipping and to ensure ethical wages and treatment of workers. These stand-out pieces are perfect for the girl

who wants to stand up for her environmental beliefs.

Page 10: Portfolio 3.15.16 version 2 small

DESIGN PROCESSAll prints for this collection were developed in Adobe Illustrator and Kaledo. The inspiration behind the original print motifs was the murals of artist Zio Ziegler. Their bold, graphic, and somewhat tribal-like appearance

guided the design process.

DESIGN CHOICESI selected a reduced color palette to reduce waste by limiting large spread color choices. Staying focused on black, white and grey creates a collection that can transition with other garments which means people will wear it longer through multiple seasons.

These prints are digitally printed on my fabric which includes organic cotton twill and natural stretch cotton jersey composed of organic cotton and spandex. Organic cotton was selected because it is one of the only natural cellulose fibers that is grown in the United States. I selected digital printing over traditional dye methods because methods like dip dye and rotary require a lot of water and energy in the fix and wash off process.

The knitwear pieces in this collection are made of naturally colored wool from non-slaughtered free-range sheep. The sheep is harnessed for its natural color as well as its all natural fiber properties. Black and white fibers can be combined during the fiber formation process to produce grey.

ROOT addresses waste by utilizing jigsaw pattern making for cut and sew garments. In the fashion industry 10-15% of fabric is not used and ends up on the cutting room floor. Knitwear is a construction method that is naturally zero waste.

JUSTIFICATIONThe life of a modern nomad requires few belongings that possess great and varied functions. Wardrobes need to feature long-lasting adaptable clothing that can function in varying climates. The pieces in the In Transit outerwear collection were designed with modifiable silhouettes, detachable vests, capes, and sleeves. Components are interchangeable throughout the collection. Silhouettes were kept sleek and

structured with crowded public transportation in mind.

OBJECTIVETo design a line of women’s outerwear that accomodates the many needs of the modern nomad through modifiable silhouettes and interchangeable

components.

NEO-NOMADAs a nation recovering from a recession many have become unemployed and have been looking far and wide for job opportunities. As a workforce we are more open to change, with people on average changing jobs every 2-3 years. Postgraduates are completely uprooting and moving cross-country. The economy has created a growing culture of modern nomads. “Home” is becoming more of a state of mind and less of a physical location.

FABRICWool (free-range) is the main fabric throughout the collection. Some pieces feature quilted wool. Not only does this add texture, it also traps in heat, perfect for a cold commute. Vegan leather (vegetan) is featured throughout the collection to add detail, texture, and luxury. Quilted leather is also featured. Faux shearling is used as a lining in the camel coat with the cocooning cape. This cape can be detached and thrown over the top of other coats in the collection.

INSPIRATIONMicroscopic images of cellular structures became the inspiration behind this project. The openness and variation in density translated beautifully into a sporty cropped sweater constructed of glossy synthetic yarn. This particular yarn was selected because it provided a crisp appearance in texture.

INSPIRATIONThe muse of this collection was a modern mermaid. Images were pulled from photographer Fernand Fonssagrives. Inspired by a mathematical approach to design, garments were designed with symmetrical and geometric components, The limited color palette allowed the high contrast of black and white to be the focal point. Nude stretch solid mesh allows cutouts to highlight the clean shapes of the swimwear. Large-

scale mesh contributes to the graphic look of this collection.
