2. Reports

2.1 President’s Report Dear Members,

Our aim is to be the best and most successful football club in the Victorian Football League. Success in football clubs can be measured in many ways, on-field success, financial sustainability in both the short and long term, quality facilities for players, supporters and staff, continuing investment in the football department and facilities and the development of appropriate, affordable staff structures. Striking the right balance between these is, at times, difficult but your board places great emphasis on financial stability and improving facilities.

In 2015 your Board has been prudent in its spending and has not committed to spend on players, staff or equipment unless it had the money in hand or a reasonable expectation based on actual income and spending from previous years. In a voluntary, community based organisation like Port Melbourne Football Club, spending and relying on hope or luck to fund the spending is a sure way to get into financial difficulties as many clubs in our competition over the years have found. We have been down that path before and nearly lost our club and this Board will not do that. I report to you on our progress in achieving and maintaining our aim, an important part of which is staying ahead of the pack.

Club Achievement’s As a club our achievements in 2015 are:

• The Social and Administration building was been completed and formal possession was gained by your club on the 23rd of December 2014;

• Our Senior Coach Gary Ayres successfully coached our VFL team to a win in his 150th game for our club against Williamstown at Point Gellibrand in atrocious conditions. It was one of the most thrilling victories in a home and away round that I have ever seen and it was my privilege to congratulate and make a presentation to him after the game;

• In what was a very difficult year with over 21 medium and long term injuries our VFL and Development League teams finished just outside the finals and this due to the diligence and drive of our senior coach Gary Ayres and Greg Ryan, our Development League coach. Greg Ryan has stood down as Development League coach due to work commitments and he has been replaced by Greg Rowe. Greg Rowe was our Development League team midfield coach in 2015.

• Your club appointed Sam Wharton as Digital and Social Media and Assistant Administrator. We have seen a marked improvement in our social media platforms this year and it is pleasing to see how many of our members and supporters are following, liking and commenting on the reports and stories;

• Your club continued to invest in football with spending on players, coaching and support staff. During 2015 your club purchased ice baths to help players to recover after a game;

• Sponsorship value taking into account cash and in-kind is at its highest level and your board thanks Platinum Sponsors Total Oil and Lubricants, Fortburn Pty Ltd, Atlas Truck Rentals and South Pacific Health Clubs. Your board would like to thank all of our

sponsors who contribute to the success of our club. All of our sponsors are listed in this report

Longevity is also a measure of success and we can be very proud of the fact that our club has just completed its 141th year.

Player Achievement’s There were many player achievements during 2015 of which these are some:

• Toby Pinwill was appointed captain of the VFL team and won the Jack McFarlane Medal for the best player for the second year in a row;

• Jordon Lisle was joint winner of the ‘Frosty’ Miller Medal for kicking the most goals in a season in the competition;

• Chris Cain played his 150th senior game in the away game win against Williamstown; • The Development League team continued to school young players and a number were

required to step up and perform in the VFL team this year; and • Sam O’Sullivan, after the season was over, successfully fought the battle of his life when

he contracted Necrotising Myositis. He is one of only seven people to have contracted this disease and survive and the only one to have not lost a limb. His objective is to play football again and I am sure that he will.

Playing Surface In last year’s report I commented on the playing surface and its maintenance. During this year Port Phillip City Council has continued the maintenance program that was recommended by the AFL turf advisor and implemented in 2013 and the playing surface has held up well, as was demonstrated following a heavy rainfall event in November. While the whole of the playing area was inundated and flooding occurred at the northern end near the social room end this water drained off quickly and was absorbed into the surface within an hour.

It is disappointing that the removal the disused turf practice wickets at the northern end of the ground has not been undertaken. The removal of the practice wickets will improve drainage at the northern end of the ground and hopefully eliminate two soft areas.

Making our Money With the opening of the new Social and Administration building has increased the number operating divisions that provide income to the club through their operations.

Revenue from match day takings has held up well and grown. The contribution from the kiosk operated by our Ladies Committee has played a significant part in this lift.

Sponsorship has continued to grow but in a difficult and challenging market we are always on the lookout for more and any assistance or leads in this area are always appreciated.

While unfortunately we didn’t have teams participating in the finals we are players through providing the venue for the first three weeks of finals. Having Essendon and Collingwood play in finals certainly provided a lift in takings for the finals series games.

Revenue at the Rex is down and this is attributed to a down turn in gaming revenue across the state and to the changing demographics of Port Melbourne. ALH, the operators of the Rex are continually reviewing operations with our club with the view of increasing revenue.

The new Social and Administration building has provided some revenue this year and Peter Rowland Catering are operating the Sandridge Reception component under an income sharing agreement.

The Reception component is continuing to ramp up and we expect a stronger contribution to earnings in 2016.

The three operating divisions are shown in the following table:

Fisherman’s Bend Urban Renewal Area The Fisherman’s Bend Urban Renewal Area has commenced with the old soap works on the eastern side of Ingles Street being cleared with housing construction expected to commence in 2016 on the old soap factory site in Ingles Street. Other building projects should commence in the area shortly. This presents great opportunities for our club and we will seek to interact with the developers for common benefit. It is disappointing that the open space areas were not identified prior to the rezoning to Capital City Zone and that a greater provision was not made for active open space as this will place great demands on the exiting active open space as the population of the area grows.

Your club will continues to contribute and make submissions to Government and Council when required.

Recognition Our club could not survive without the continuing support of many people. I would like to thank:

• Our players;

• The senior coach Gary Ayres, Development League coach Greg Ryan and their assistant coaches for their commitment, teaching and leadership in 2015;

• Dr Rob Nicholson and the fitness staff for ensuring that our players are fit and that their recovery is well managed;

• The training, medical and team support staff for ensuring that our players are well sustained and looked after;

• The team managers and assistants and match day runners who ably support our coaches and players;

• Joan Round and our Ladies Committee for their continuing support. The way they operate the kiosk and deal with the customers does them great credit and I am not sure where the club would be financially without their efforts. Thanks also to Jenny Tserkezidis who, for a second year, produced a club calendar as a successful fund raiser.

• The people who have staffed the merchandise stall over the season;

• The Past Players and Officials Association and its committee ably led by Graham Clark and Gary Brice;

• Our sponsors at all levels;

• The match day support staff of time keepers, scorers, gate keepers, time clock operators, statisticians, cooks, waiters, master of ceremonies, ground announcers, bar staff and support people;

• Nathan Strempel for his work in emceeing game day lunches and game day ground announcements ;

• Our club patron Martin Foley MP and our ward councillor Bernadene Voss for their continuing support and advice;

• Our number 1 ticket holder Bruce Mathieson and his company ALH for their support; and • Kirsty Reidy and the Recreation Unit from Port Phillip City Council for their support and

advocacy of the club during 2015. I would like to congratulate Cr Bernadine Voss on her election as Mayor of Port Phillip City Council. It is great that a Port Melbourne person and the ward councillor has been appointed to this position.

I would also like to thank Bruce Mathieson for his support through the Rex and his personal interest in the club.

I particularly thank and acknowledge our general manager Barry Kidd who has now over 20 years of service and who does so much for our club.

I would like to thank my Board colleagues, Andrew Nankervis, Warren Voss and Scott Ridout, Dominic Messino, Theo Kerlidis and Joshua Hayward. Your Board has a broad range of skills and knowledge that they bring to the management of your club. I also acknowledge Jim Mapleston who resigned a as director during the year due to work commitments.

In filing casual vacancies your board has sought to strengthen the expertise of the board and the appointment of Theo Kerlidis and Joshua Hayward have brought specific expertise in building design and development and financial planning to the Board. We have a well-balanced Board that bring a broad range of skills and experience to the management of our club that will ensure that our club continued success.

Tributes While I extend my condolences to all members who have lost loved ones in 2015 and these are included in this report I want to pay particular tributes to Lillian Goss, Ina Holt and Charlie Reid who passed in 2015.

Life member Lillian Goss was one of those special breed of Port Melbourne women who contributed and continue to contribute to our club. Lillian became involved with our club when her husband, the legendary Norm Goss, joined us and quickly became part of the club. For over forty years she sold the record, raffle tickets and memberships from what is now the merchandise booth. Four of her sons, Norm, Paul, Kevin and Michael played for Port and she provided strong support to her husband when he ran our club.

Life member Ina Holt was another of those special breed of Port Melbourne women. Ina spent over 40 years working, as a volunteer, in the kiosk. Her son Sam played for our club and I extend my and the clubs condolences to Ina’s family.

Life member Charlie Reid supported our (his) club for all of his life. Dying just short of his 103rd birthday Charlie attended most home games including several this year. Fourteen of our sixteen premierships were won in his lifetime and he attended most of them including the 2011 premiership where, pushing his zimmer frame, he was able to get access to our rooms to join in the celebrations with our players.

The contributions and support that Lillian, Ina and Charlie and their like make are what makes our club great and we are poorer for their passing.

We look forward to the commencement of the 2016 season and seeing our teams returning as power houses in the competition.

Go Borough!

2.2 GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT 2015

The 2015 season was a very challenging one to say the least, both on and off the field. On the field we experienced multiple injuries, which impacted, on our ability to win enough games to make the finals, missing out for the first time since 2007. Throughout our history we have campaigned in 74 Finals Series, played in 37 Grand Finals for 16 Premierships. An outstanding record with our arch enemy and closest rival, Williamstown 15 Final Series behind us.

The opening of the new function facility presented another challenge for staff and patrons. We will be better prepared in 2016 to make use of this excellent award winning facility having learned several valuable lessons in 2015.

The Club hosted two significant events in 2015, the Herald Sun Cup, which returned to North Port for the first time since 2009 and the AFL National Inclusion Games (FIDA) for the first time. The Semi Finals were played between Essendon Keilor College and Mackillop Catholic College and St. Patrick’s and St. Joseph’s College’s. The Grand Final was a very entertaining game between St. Patrick’s and Essendon Keilor with St. Patrick’s running out winners. The AFL National Inclusion Cup was a pleasure to host. Teams from Tasmania, South Australia, Queensland, Western Australia, New South Wales, Vic Metro and Vic Country competed over four days with two days played at North Port. Players are from disadvantaged backgrounds, unemployed and in a lot of cases, socially maligned. AFL organisers, team officials and parents were very generous in their comments in regard to the Port Melbourne Football Club hosting the games, operating a canteen (this did not occur at other venues) and the professionalism of the Port Melbourne Football Club staff. We look forward to hosting these events in the future. Congratulations are extended to Toby Pinwill on winning back to back Jack McFarlane Medals, John McKenzie on winning the Graeme Barfoot Medal, Jordan Lisle on winning the Jim ‘Frosty’ Miller Medal and Oakleigh Chargers on winning the TAC Cup Premiership.

The club again hosted the VFL Final Series and with three AFL standalone VFL teams (Collingwood, Essendon and Footscray) in the finals and excellent weather, we witnessed a fantastic final series over three weeks. Passionate supporters flocked to North Port Oval, which presented our staff with numerous challenges every day. I must say without doubt, they accepted the challenge on all days and upheld the standards of the Club.

I am pleased to inform all members that the 2016 VFL Final Series will be played at North Port and hopefully one day we will see the return of the Grand Final.

I wish to express my sincere thanks to the following groups;

The Coaching Staff lead by Gary Ayres and I thank you for your services. Gary was ably supported by Brad Swain, Paul Griffiths, Trent McMicking and Peter Keenan. Greg Ryan was again in charge of the DVL team and he was ably supported by Brett Curran, Greg Hosking and Lee Rowe. It is with regret that we say goodbye to Greg who has performed in a very professional manner throughout his time at the Borough. Well done Greg.

To our medical and training staff of Dr Patrick Sunderland, Physiotherapists Nathan Schiodtz and James Dickinson, training staff of John Newson, Erica O’Donnell, Adriana Warwick, Emily Rienks, Sylvia Rienks

Henry ‘Pug’ Tucker, Yoshi Goad Andrew Tserkezidis, Tameika Hall-Harvey, Ashley Crawford, Jessica Doherty and Brent Landorf. I thank you for your professional approach to your duties.

To the Ladies Committee led by Joan Round and supported by Margaret Addicoat and Diane Perazzo, I thank you for another magnificent effort. As I have stated for many years, to have your voluntary services year in and year out is priceless.

To all support staff that are listed in the ‘Special Thanks’ section of this Annual report I thank you for your outstanding contribution to the Port Melbourne Football Club.

To Platinum Sponsors; Fortburn, Atlas Truck Rentals and South Pacific Health Clubs, Support Sponsors and Player Sponsors, I wish to express this Club’s sincere thanks for your financial contribution in season 2015.

To the Past Players’ Association led by Graham Clark (President) and Gary Brice (Secretary), I wish to sincerely thank you and your committee for your donation of $10,000.00. As always, it is very much appreciated.

To Nathan Strempel, MC, I thank you for assuming this role and making a valuable impact at the President’s Luncheons, Super Draw Day and the Presentation Night, a job very well done.

As we approach the 2016 season it is pleasing to advise all members that Channel 7 will again televise the VFL Match of the Day. This presented us with a challenge given the early starts but in time the rewards will come given that the viewing audiences were up 50% on 2014 (H & A games) and 29% on 2014 Final Series. Port Melbourne games averaged 50,000 with a peak of 89,500. Our largest peak audience was the Footscray away game with 124,000 viewers.

To the Board of Directors led by President, Peter Bromley, I thank you for your loyalty, support and commitment to our great Club.

Finally, I wish to pay homage to a VERY SPECIAL PERSON, Lillian (Lily) Goss. I have had the pleasure of knowing Lil and her family for over 40 years. The world is a sadder place now that Lil has left us to be reunited with Norm.

Rest in Peace ‘The Queen of Port Melbourne’

2.3 SENIOR COACH’S ANNUAL REPORT 2015 Season 2015 was a season that never reached the standards that we set at Port. Our inability to cover the 1200+ games of VFL experience that left at the conclusion of 2014, the numerous injuries that we encountered, the failure to be able to pick our best side at any stage of the season, and to lose 6 games by an average losing margin of 8 points all contributed to why we missed the finals for the first time in 9 years. The only time we played at somewhere near our best was from Rds. 4 to 7 when we won 4 consecutive games including a memorable match against eventual premiers in Williamstown. From this point on we would fall off the pace of the competition and finish 10th. We played 47 players, and even though this was a high turnover of personnel, I believe it will prove to be a positive for next year with the emergence of some very good young talent. Names like Rivett, Waddell, Dove, Dickson, Pearson, Mioni, Urban and R. Hogan will all be part of what we base our improvement on going forward next year. Congratulations must go to our combative captain in Toby Pinwill, who won his 2nd Best and Fairest award, Jordy Lisle who won his first ‘Frosty’ Miller medal and was our only representative in the VFL Team of the Year. I would like to thank the Board of the PMFC and General Manager Barry Kidd, for their continued support. To Anthony Piccolo for his nothing but total professional attitude to everything he does in his role as Football Manager. Also a big thank you for the ongoing support of all the coaches, Rob Nicholson (Strength and Conditioning), statisticians, medical staff, support staff and also to Sam Wharton. To my friend and outgoing Development Coach in Greg Ryan; you have given me amazing loyalty, support and friendship over the last 5 years. Thanks for the memories mate. To an extremely important group of people, our wonderful and amazing supporters; a huge thank you. I am very bullish about our improvement going into season 2016 and wish everyone a safe and joyous Christmas and New Year period. Head Coach Gary Ayres

2.4 2015 Development Squad Season Report: I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Port Melbourne Football Club for the privilege of being the Development Coach for the last 5 years. To be a part of this great club’s history is the highlight of my nearly 50-year career in footy.

Thanks go to Peter, Barry & the Board; Graeme Clark & the Past Players group, our wonderful supporters, and the dedicated support staff who have given me every assistance in my role.

I would like to acknowledge Gary Ayres, for your guidance & support over the last 5 years but more importantly the great friendship we have developed over the journey, which I am sure will continue for years to come.

To Anthony Piccolo and Sam Wharton, thank you for your tireless work in making our club more professional. Thanks also to Ricky & Grant who have done a great job throughout the year. Your hard work has made my job a lot easier and you have done some fantastic work for the club.

To Rob Nicholson and your support staff, your tireless efforts in making our boys fitter is a credit to your professionalism.

To my assistants Brett Curran, Lee Rowe, Greg Hoskin and Peter Keenan, you have been great support at training and on game day. Particularly to Brett and Peter who have been with me for the 5 years as coaches, and mentors, thank you very much for all of your support.

Thanks to Toby Pinwill and the leadership group for your hard work, guidance and support – it is much appreciated. Thanks to all of the mentors who have come on board this year which has developed and I believe this program can be a valuable resource for the club to continue moving forward. This all adds to the strength of the club.

The real thanks goes to the players for their efforts over the past 5 years. Players like Clay Johnston, Sam O’Sullivan, Tomi Johnston, Josh Purcell, Josh Scipione & Tom Langford, who have been with me from 2011, in and out of the Development League side. These players have great character, are very resilient and are so important for the culture, depth and strength of the footy club.

To all the boys who played Development football, well done. You have represented the club with pride and competitive spirit. It has been a great effort to make 3 Preliminary Finals in 5 years and to be so competitive as a standalone club. I will admit this year we had no luck with injuries and this definitely effected our ladder position in the end.

It’s an interesting and challenging role as Development Coach of the 23 players you are entrusted with on a weekly basis, as all of them would prefer to be playing Senior football. Just like the boys who are at their home clubs are desperate to be in the Development side. The great thing is that when boys do go up to the Seniors and play well you feel like a proud parent.

The Development squad plays an important role in the success of the Senior team and keeps the pressure on the Senior group. Being able to make finals is critical in keeping the group together well into the Finals series, and subsequently important for the club’s success overall.

I must congratulate all the trophy winners in season 2015. I also wish Lee Rowe all the best in his future role as Development Coach. I know you will do a great job.

To every player on the list, I thank and congratulate you for the respect you have shown me in the position since I have been in the role. Also to the PMFC from the supporters to the past players to the current group, thanks for making me feel so welcome at this great club and let’s all help in continuing to make the Borough great. I will now be able to stand on the hill at North Port with Stan & ‘Bairdy’, and enjoy a few ‘frothies’ while cheering the Borough on and telling anyone who will listen how good I was.

I look forward to a great 2016 season enjoying more great PMFC highlights.

Greg Ryan.

2.5 Port Melbourne Football Club Past Players and Officials Association

Annual Report 2015

Once again it is my pleasure to present this report on behalf of the Past Players and Officials Association of the mighty Port Melbourne Football Club. The 2015 Committee of Past Players and Officials have once again completed another busy year. The overall aim of our Committee is to conduct functions during the season in order to see as many former players and officials back at the Club as well as raising some funds for the Club. We introduced a special membership package this year for $200 and it went well. We intend to increase the numbers of membership in this category next year. Season 2015 also included our normal membership deal have to be a part of our association. Our paid membership total this year was 86. We keep striving each year to reach the "100 plus" paid up members. During our regular meetings in 2015 we planned a number of activities for season. It has been the aim of the P.P & O. Committee to provide 2/3 functions per year for its members so that they can attend the Port Melbourne Football Club. The Committee is very aware that its members do have other commitments and are not available each week to attend the Club. However, by providing the members with the opportunity to attend any or all of the functions, we believe that it can only promote, add strength and continue the great history and tradition of our Club. A new innovation this year was the mentor program set up by Greg Ryan and Glenn Robertson. This program linked current and former players. A large number of former players volunteered to be involved. We were included in the jumper presentation out on the ground. To be back on our ground with some of my old team mates was a buzz. It gave the former players a wonderful opportunity to link the past with the current. I strongly believe that this program should continue next year and moving on from what we all learnt from it, the program will only get better. A fantastic link. As usual, our first social/fundraising activity of the year was our annual Golf Day which was held at the Freeway Golf Club in Bulleen. The day was attended by 18 Past Player/Officials. This was another very successful and enjoyable day. The day has now become a regular fixture on our calendar. Our golf day in 2016 will be held on the first Sunday in March at the same venue. During the season we were able to support the Club in a number of ways. One major area of financial support by our Association was once again in supporting the Club's 2015 Best & Fairest winners. At the Club's Presentation night, we were able to present 3 awards for the Seniors which was $500 for first, $300 for second and $200 for third. We added a $200 award this year to the B & F winner in the Development Team. A total of $1200. Our annual luncheon was held on Friday 4 September. Our guest speaker this year was former VFL /Essendon Champion, Terry Daniher. The contribution from Terry with his presentation made our function a most memorable one. We had 127 guests attend the Social Club. This day plays a major part in our fundraising efforts for the Club. It is the aim of our Committee to hold this function again in 2016 with the date to be the Friday before the VFL Final series kicks off. Our luncheon this year was our Twelfth annual luncheon. It was fantastic to host this luncheon for the first time in the new function room. Season 2015 had many hurdles for Gary Ayres and his Coaching Staff. This aside, the enjoyment and pleasure that the team was still able to give our mighty supporters during the season is something very special. On behalf of our members, we extend our congratulations once again to Gary Ayres, his staff and all of the players on their achievements which took place under difficult circumstances. We know that next year is another year and we look forward to moving back up the ladder where we belong. The P.P. & O. Committee is now looking forward to season 2016. Our Committee will continue the drive to increase our membership and data base details. Season 2016 will see the P.P. & O. Committee maintain its strong links with the Club and strive to work as hard as we can to ensure the success of this great club. I would like to express my thanks on behalf of the Committee to Peter Bromley, Barry Kidd and the Board of Management who have supported our committee all year. It was with great pleasure that we were able to once again present a cheque to the club for $10,000 as a result of our fundraising during the year at the annual Presentation Night in October The Past Players and Officials Committee members for 2015 were: Gary Brice (Secretary), Frank Johnson (Treasurer), Peter Wilkinson, Bill Swan, Kevin Goss, Darren Freyer and Glenn Robertson. I thank them for their

outstanding effort this year. We have worked well together in a spirit of teamwork and mateship. We would like to think that we still have that after all of these years. Just can't kick very far or run 400's like we use to. We all look forward to season 2016 with great interest and enthusiasm. Go The Borough! Graeme Clark President Port Melbourne Past Players & Officials Association

2.6 ADMINISTRATION AND DIGITAL MEDIA COORDINATOR REPORT

Having completed by Bachelor of Sport and Recreation Management degree at Victoria University in 2014, I was lucky enough to commence a full-time position at the Port Melbourne Football Club in February 2015, with the title of ‘Administration and Digital Media Coordinator’. My role at the club essentially entails the management and maintenance of the club’s social media platforms; compiling match reports and other articles for the club’s website; conducting interviews and publishing other relevant video content for our ‘Borough TV’ YouTube channel; assisting in the delivery of club functions and events; and providing overall administrative support to General Manager Barry Kidd. I also have a role in promoting the club within the wider community, with an aim to generate interest in the Port Melbourne Football Club and ultimately increase membership and sponsorship revenue. In any organisation, it’s always the people that have the ability to make it great. There is no better example than this than the Port Melbourne Football Club. Although I have some previous family history associated with the club (my father played in the 1976 Premiership and my late grandfather was a Life Member) and had heard famous tales about the Borough, you can never truly grasp how great this club is until you are involved on the inner sanctum. And whilst the commitment of the players, coaches, trainers, physiotherapists, runners, statisticians and volunteers could never be questioned, the people that truly blow me away with their passion are the supporters. We are truly blessed to have the supporters that we do. There was no better example of this than our round 13 clash against the Scorpions out at Casey Fields this year. Blowing a gale, torrential rain, bitterly cold weather and we only managed two goals for the whole day. Yet here were our fans being loud and proud right until the final siren of one our biggest away ‘road trips’. I look forward to continuing to share relationships with all of you. Our challenge is to find the next generation of Borough supporters to ensure we are sustainable for another 141 years; and if they are half as passionate about the club as what you guys are, then we will prosper. From a media perspective, there is no doubt that the club has made gains in this

area, yet as with anything else, there is still work to be done. The club needs to continue to put time and effort in to becoming a prominent entity within the digital landscape because that’s the direction that the modern world is heading in. I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank Barry and the Board for the initial opportunity that they have given me with this position, as well as all of their subsequent support. Barry is an amazing asset to the club and his experience as General Manager of the club for so long has already proven invaluable for teaching me so much. I would also like to thank Gary Ayres for the time he has dedicated to helping me during my first year at the club. It is easy to see why Gary is held in such high regard in the football world and achieved so much success throughout his time in the game. I wish Gary, his coaching staff and all of the playing group every success next year and beyond. I know we will bounce back hard on the field and I’m so excited to share the journey with you all. Finally, to Sam O’Sullivan; what an inspiration you have proven to everybody involved in the football club in your battle this year. I know you still have a long way to go but what you have achieved so far and the odds you have defied is truly remarkable. We are all behind you mate. Go Borough! Sam Wharton Administration and Digital Media Coordinator Port Melbourne Football Club

2.7 Football Operations Report 2015 was always going to be a different year with the landscape changing from an experienced list full of leaders, to a young and developing list with an average age of nearly 22. Although missing finals for the first time since 2006, there were many positives which we will see flourish in the near future. The departure of key and experienced players including club and league champions was always going to be difficult to replace in one off-season. The calibre of the list of Baird, Pleming, Valenti, Bonaddio, Rowe, Fanning, Connors, Marigliani and Davies includes hundreds of AFL matches, premierships and, most importantly, leaders. The recruiting phase saw 26 new players join with 3 from AFL lists, 8 from VFL clubs, 11 TAC Cup and 4 from local football. On top of 1200+ games departing the list, injuries to significant players really hurt, and this toll began to mount from early on in the practice matches in March. Key players that were missed were Brown 0 matches, Purcell 2, Magner 2, Lange 3, Michaliades 3, Scipione 5, Cain 9 and Sandilands 11. 47 players were played in the Seniors which tested our depth but it was a positive to have players well prepared to step up to Senior footy. This gave the opportunity to get important games into Dickson 9 matches, R. Hogan 6, Keogh 6, Waddell 5, Rivett 5, Dove 4 and Mioni 2 for their continued development. The real emergence was of Pearson using his pace and goal smarts, Dickson to negate opposition forwards, Riley Hogan to use his dashing pace to attack, Dove’s works ethic and ability to mark and goal, and Rivett using his footy smarts to win the ball, will become more prolific. Our finals hopes were kept alive until deep into the season but were dashed by 6 narrow losses by 12 points or less (Werribee 12, Sandringham 7, Essendon 11, Richmond 8, Footscray 3, Collingwood 8). The highlight of the year was no doubt the Round 4 fighting victory against Williamstown rewarding club legends Chris Cain & Gary Ayres with a fitting win in their 150th Borough match. Off the field, a Player Mentor program was established with a current player being mentored by a past player including Gary Brice, Peter Bedford, Billy Swan, Cory McGrath and Sam Pleming, amongst others. This gave our young list a support mechanism and framework to assist them in managing and maintaining their focus, thoughts and actions in relation to their football aspirations; as well as other career, family and social responsibilities. It was great to see so many past players attend games and functions throughout the year. This program was established by Development coach Greg Ryan and credit goes to him for his tireless effort and time invested to coordinate it. Operationally, we took a great step in the way the coaches and players were able to analyse the games with the club obtaining SportsCode licences. SportsCode is the leading AFL video and data analysing product, which through its ease of use enabled comprehensive team and individual reviews. The healthy partnership with the Oakleigh Chargers continued to strengthen. 9 players transitioned to our list in 2015 with 6 (Urban, Rivett, Mioni, Carter-Taylor, Waddell and Dove)

getting a taste of senior football, which will hold them in good stead for 2016 and beyond. Another benefit of the partnership is the exposure of players to VFL & Development footy as we saw mainly by Ben Crocker, Kade Answerth and Tom Phillips playing critical roles against quality opposition. We congratulate the Oakleigh Chargers on being crowned 2015 TAC Cup Premiers and look forward to working with a talented group of transitioning players. The team and club cannot be possible without the amazing support staff who dedicate a massive amount of time and effort into the club and players to ensure the two teams are able to train and compete each week. The mountain of work does not go unnoticed. I acknowledge the contribution of the medical, fitness and training staff in ensuring players are well managed and at their best to compete; property stewards for the resources, team managers for the coordination, the statistics team, runners, timekeeper, interchange steward & umpire escorts that all play a critical role. As with the above, the investment by the coaches is critical to our results and player development, and this was demonstrated by all appointed coaches to the highest level led by Gary and Greg. 2016 promises to be an exciting year with new recruits, the continued development of current listed players and the enthusiasm of the talented TAC Cup players that will see the mighty Borough vie for our 17th Premiership. Anthony Piccolo Football Manager

15. 1 VALE LILLIAN GOSS

The Port Melbourne Football Club is deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Lillian Goss. Dubbed by many as “The Queen of Port Melbourne”, Mrs. Goss was a Life Member of the football club and the VFA/VFL, as well as the wife of legendary Port Melbourne administrator Norm Goss Snr. Lillian and Norm were the proud parents of former Borough footballers: Norm Jnr, Paul, Kevin and Michael (pictured below). She was also a key part of the club’s Ladies Committee and a volunteer working in the club’s canteen for many decades. The everlasting impact that she had on the club is demonstrated by her portrait remaining pride of place alongside Norm Snr. in the club’s ‘Borough Bar’ under the Norm Goss Stand. Lillian Goss passed away on Wednesday 18th November after a long battle with ill health, predominantly skin cancer. She was 96. Our sincere condolences to the Goss family. May she Rest in Peace.
