At our last Circle of Friends meeting we decided to remake the old cookbook “Our Favorite Recipes” as a fundraiser. We want to add any new recipes anyone may have. Please select your favorite recipe because we are limiting you to only one recipe due to the size of the book. Also include your name under the recipe and it will go in the book too. Please give your new recipe to Lynn Zielinski by November 12th because she is making copies of Mary’s cookbook and will add any new recipes we may have. The cookbook will then be assembled and may be ready for purchase as Christmas gifts. This is also a good time to invite all women to join the United Methodist Women and our Circle of Friends groups. We work to improve our church and our missions improve our world. We’d love to have you join us. Diane Sweat/Carol Harvestine, October Circle of Friends co-chairs

HELPING HANDS GOSPEL MISSION

Helping Hands Gospel Mission will be our special designated mission offering for November and

December. HHGM serves the homeless and near homeless in Wood County. Our mission is to

bridge the gap of human need. We truly believe that we are making a positive impact with

those who are hurting and need a helping hand. Below is a story that our Executive Director,

Tricia Janssen, shared recently:

“I have been working with a young mom who is a veteran struggling with PTSD. Originally from

the east coast, she was alone, desperate and homeless in our community having come here to

reconnect with a son. My contact with *Amanda began with a phone call from the Family

Center to help a young woman who was willing to go to shelter out of town. We would provide

the transportation there. Before she left, I was able to pray with her and assure here that God

had not forgotten her. Her journey in short order brought her back to Wisconsin Rapids. She

had police contact because of squatting and we once again were contacted, this time by the jail to

help get her to a place where she would have safe shelter. Through several other contacts and

working with several agencies, she was finally able to secure transitional housing! Yesterday I

had the privilege of picking her up from the hotel we had put her in and move her into her new

apartment! God is good.”

We appreciate your generously financial donations. You can give through the church (HHGM-

memo section) or directly to HHGM, P.O. Box 1352, WI. Rapids 54495-1352 or online at

helpinghandsgospelmission.org.

BIBLE STUDY

Pastor Dave will be leading a lectionary Bible study on Wednesday mornings from 11:00 a.m.-

noon during November and December beginning on November 7th. Each week we will study the

scriptures for the upcoming Sunday (Nov. 7th study will focus on lessons for Nov. 11th). You can

find the scriptures in this newsletter.

New Fundraising Project

The Port Edwards United Methodist Church has a long history of reaching out into the greater community. Lives have been blessed and souls have communed inside and outside the walls. The PEUMC proposes to make our current facility more user-friendly by installing an elevator. The ability to provide complete access to all who enter our doors will further our ongoing tradition of community involvement in the local area. We host numerous events and groups that will benefit from the addition of an elevator. In addition, the time has come to replace the roof over our Fellowship Hall causing us to step out in faith to raise funds for both projects simultaneously. To achieve this mission we ask you to prayerfully consider supporting our quest for the future. Because some donations have already been given, a dedicated account has been set up at the NPESB in which to deposit funds. Our goal is to raise $200,000 for the combined projects. Note: Please make separate checks/cash for elevator and/or roof donations. We have 2 separate accounts and we want the donation to go into the proper account. Thank you

“May the Lord continue to bless us as

we seek to serve Him in this place.”

Sunday School

What a great turnout we’ve had for Sunday school this year! The kids are really participating in the lessons and learning a lot. They love how the room looks and the fun furniture and colors that are all around them. We spent the first month talking about Jesus’ family and our own families. It’s been terrific hearing about all the kid’s families and then comparing life then and now. We’ll continue with the family theme as we transition into the “We Are Family” themes.

Our Christmas program will be on December 9th this year so please mark your calendars. We will start practicing on 11/4 and continue through the month of November and December up to the program. We are also planning a rehearsal on Friday December 7th at 5:30 pm with a Christmas party to follow. We’ll provide the food and a short movie and should be completed by 7:30. Please try to have your kids at as many practices as possible during that time.

Sunday School Schedule

Noisy Collection

Just a reminder that the noisy collection is the 2nd Sunday of the month. We are raising money for the next 2 months to buy church t-shirts for the kids and youth to promote the church and generate interest in the community. An order form will be available in a future bulletin for adults to order shirts too. What a great way to get out our message! Noisy collections are always the 2nd Sunday of the month from September through May.

Volunteering

We are always looking for people to help either through volunteering for Sunday school or youth group. If you are interested in helping, please let me know either through email, call or text. Otherwise, please get in contact with anyone on the Education Committee. Support of the children and youth programs are an investment in the growth of our church. Dave’s Ponderings

I have had the privilege of being able to be involved in our surrounding communities in a variety

of ways. As we approach Thanksgiving, people like to hear the feel good stories of families being

helped. I, too, enjoy hearing stories of being whose lives been turned around towards a future of

hope. It is also clear to me as I work with Helping Hands Gospel Mission (HHGM) that we still

live in world where people are simply treated as second class citizens. HHGM ministers to

clients who are homeless and near homeless. Especially disturbing to me, is to hear stories of

how some are treated as second class citizens by the very people and agencies who are assigned

to help them

I believe that Jesus tore down these walls of separation when he sat down and ate with the

sinners, outcasts, and the poor. Jesus was breaking down barriers that existed between the

privileged religious folk and the rest considered unworthy to enter God’s Temple.

Approaching the season of giving, offers us an opportunity to rethink through the way

people are treated and should be treated. We often give God thanks for all the things we have,

but a question that I would pose is do we deserve to have more than others? Am I

privileged? Do I deserve health care that is paid for by my church more than others without it?

One of the issues we are dealing with at HHGM is before people in need can be helped in the

long run, they must be have at least some temporary housing and be safe. I remember a young

man confessing to a judge in Wood County of violating his agreement by using some drugs. He

had crashed at a cousin’s house and the cousin enticed him to use again over the weekend. This

is what I mean in part when I say that people need a safe place where they can get back on the

road to health and wholeness again. The judge was lenient because he understand the young

man’s dilemma and sincerity. We have real problem in our community when it comes to

housing and affordable housing. Those of us with a roof over our heads forget this simple fact

sometimes.

The month of November is homelessness awareness month. You can check out a separate

article on how you can assist HHGM in its work. Our challenge goes beyond money to the very

core of who we are as God’s people. The late Jewish philosopher Martin Buber offers this quote,

“To help one another is not considered a task, but the self-evident reality on which

companionship is based. To help is not a virtue, but a pulse of existence.… Help, not out of pity –

that is, from a sharp, quick pain which one wishes to expel – but out of love, which means to live

with others. He who only pities receives from the mere outward manifestation of the sorrow of

others a sharp, quick pain, totally unlike the real sorrow of the sufferer.”

A key line for me in this quote is helping out of love, which means to live with others. To treat

others as second class people always means that we find ourselves separate and superior to them

in some way.

May the words of the Apostle Paul inspire us to give thanks to the God of all mercies and

thanks to humanity for supporting our existence; “3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord

Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all consolation, 4 who consoles us in all our

affliction, so that we may be able to console those who are in any affliction with the consolation

with which we ourselves are consoled by God.” I pray that we will take these words to heart.

In Christ’s Love,

Pastor Dave

SPECIAL GENERAL CONFERENCE

A Special General Conference Session will take place in St. Louis, Mo. From February 23-26,

2019 for the purpose of deciding on issues of sexuality as they pertain to the LGBTQ community.

General Conference consisting of clergy and elected lay delegates from the U.S. and Central

Conferences throughout the world is the only body that can speak for the United Methodist

Church

A special commission, which had been called together by the Council of Bishops after the 2016

General Conference entitled A Way Forward, was given the task of studying the issue and

developing a recommended plan for the Council of Bishops to discuss and send their

recommendation forward to the General Conference delegates. The Way Forward Commission

had developed three different plans or approaches to the issue of sexuality: One Church Plan,

The Connectional Conference Plan and the Traditionalist Plan. The commission recommended

the One Church Plan for consideration. The Council of Bishops at their special session in May

also decided to send the One Church Plan to General Conference for consideration.

The One Church plan offers flexibility for clergy and conferences to act according to their

particular context. Clergy would have the freedom to decide, for example, whether or not they

would be willing to officiate at same sex weddings. The plan keeps the United Methodist Church

under one structural umbrella.

The Connectional Conference Plan would create three separate conferences; a progressive

conference, a conservative conference and a third more moderate (that’s Pastor Dave’s words)

conference and conferences and clergy can decide on which conference to which they would

belong. This plan was deemed unfeasible because it would probably require constitutional

changes in our United Methodist polity which could drag on for years.

The Traditionalist Plan would essentially leave things as they are in our United Methodist Book

of Discipline.

If you would like to find out more about the details of these plans, please copy the following link

http://s3.amazonaws.com/Website_Properties/council-of-

bishops/news_and_statements/documents/Way_Forward_Report_-_Final_-_ENGLISH.pdf. It is

a very long document but you can find information on each of these approaches beginning on

page 11- One Church Plan, page 26, The Connectional Conference Plan and page 54- The

Traditionalist plan. Please contact Pastor Dave if you have any additional questions.

General Conference 2019 Listening Session

Why is there a special General Conference coming February 23-26, 2019 in St. Louis, only a year before the regularly scheduled 2020 session in Minneapolis? How might my church be affected by this talk about choosing among a One Church, Connectional Conference and Traditionalist plan? Will other possibilities emerge? Change is coming for the United Methodist Church, and there will be meetings this fall to help Wisconsin United Methodists understand what is being proposed. Saturday, October 6, 10:00AM, Wausau Wesley UMC, 1101 Elm Street
