Popular Rendezvous
July was like Christmas time at Frederic Place this year. Not only did we have a break in the
monetary donations drought, but Mandela Day this year brought us the highest number of
gifts bearing visitors.
Preggie Govender’s group visited on Saturday the 16 July and spoiled our residents while
Dereje with his three sons delivered fifty suits for our ladies on Thursday the 14 July.
On the 18 July we were blessed by:
Kofifi Media Group who with the Ekklesia Ministries delivered heavenly soul food, devotions
and pampered our residents with hand massages etc. They posted over 150 photos of this
event on their website on the 19/07/2016.
Zelda organized her family to paint our ground floor frail care lounge.
As though an answer to our prayers the following visitors brought us much needed
groceries, cleaning materials, toiletries, fruit even vitamin supplements and loads of
blankets. These Mandela Day visitors were: Loads of Living, Helen Joseph Hospital Speech
Therapy Department, Gen Assist, The International Hotel School, Tsogo Sandton Sun, St
Teresa Convent School, The Star and Sirago, Becton Dickson, and their CEO graced us with
his presence. There is a saying that presence is better than presents
We thank you all – Siyabulela kakhulu, nangomso!!
Grateful to His Daughter
Mr Ndoda Amos Buthelezi wrote a four page article as his contribution to this FP Newsletter, which unfortunately we
could not publish verbatim due to our limited space. Even though Mr Buthelezi has not been long at Frederic Place,
he has been elected the Deputy chairman to Mr Robert Taylor who is the chairman of the newly elected residents
committee. In his article Mr Buthelezi demonstrated his sharp analytical skills and eloquence commenting on the
tranquil social environment, the languages of communication which include Afrikaans and tsotsi taal, services
rendered by the staff including comprehensive care, medication and activities such as choirs and games.
In conclusion he says that he must thank his daughter Qedusizi popularly known as Miemie for finding him a home
like Frederic Place Home for the aged, which allowed him to collect his thoughts, reflect on his life and become
grounded. He makes an interesting observation that the great philosophers like Geoffrey Chaucer, Socrates and
Spinoza did their great works when they were not so young. There is a wealth of treasure among the residents and a
lot of wisdom to be passed from one generation to the next. Referring to his earlier thinking on the Pythagoras
metempsychosis – the passage of the soul after death from one animal to another, he says he had already preferred
to be a tiger.
This write up should not come as a surprise considering that this senior citizen used to be a university lecturer
Real Love
Last year October Miss Hailey Jacoba Johanna Van Zyl was a celebrity at Frederic Place as the Moodley family threw
her the mother of all birthday parties for her 90th. Sadly she passed away on the 26 July 2016. At ninety she was still
active and enjoyed walking around with the aid of her wheeled walker. During the last two weeks of her life, the
arthritis got too much for her and she had to be moved to frail care.
We thought it advisable to inform the Moodley family about her passing little expecting their surprise response. In
Miss Van Zyl’s records there was mention of an AVBOB funeral policy. When we contacted them it turned out that
they had no record of such a policy. This meant that Frederic Place would carry the funeral costs or Hailey’s body
would be left to be buried at a pauper’s funeral, as we still could not trace her family or any significant contacts.
Thank to this loving Moodley family who embraced Hailey as their own and paid for all the funeral expenses in full.
We thank them for their love and generosity. God bless this loving family.
Phoenix from the Ashes
Since our previous newsletter we have recently completed our assessments of the
temporary staff that were urgently recruited in February and March. The process
included an aptitude test and on the job assessment to qualify for their permanent
positions. Well done to those who successfully passed their examinations. We would
like to welcome them to the team at Frederic Place. Twelve care workers and two
general assistant workers were confirmed and we hope they have a long and life
enhancing work experience at Frederic Place.
We welcome to Frederic Place our recently appointed new social worker Fiona Sibanda
and the two Staff Nurses: Bertha Nxele and Girly Kubay who is in in the picture.
Donations and Visits
Considering the difficult economic times we are faced with in our country, Frederic Place has been blessed with
support in some way or another. Though we have not received much in monetary value since December 2015, which
we desperately need, companies and individuals have contributed in ways that reduce unavoidable operational costs
such as Power, Water, Food and Maintenance etc. It would be remiss of us not to mention those who gave so
willingly and without reward.

Maintenance and Housekeeping
Our residents’ building was erected in 1953 and used as a convent up until 1975. The period between 1975 and
1978, many internal alterations were done to render the building compliant for the occupancy of our destitute
elderly. Our house-keeping staff does a fine day to day job in maintaining a clean and hygienically clean
environment for the residents. Our residents are grateful to have Frederic Place as their home, however a building
as old as ours needs constant attention much like our elderly residents. We have planned major maintenance
replace and repair projects which need funding or a helping hand from the community, we would be eternally
grateful for any assistance in this regard.

67 Blankets for Mandela Day 67 minutes may be enough time to do your grocery shopping but is it really enough time to make a lasting difference?
Wouldn’t it be great if what starts as 67 minutes turned into 67days, 67 weeks, 67 months and maybe even 67 years of
someone giving their time to serve those around them? Now that seems more in tune with Madiba’s legacy.
