The Problem… Keeping track of websites, articles, gray literature, and books for

scholarly (and practitioner) research can be difficult and require complex and/or multiple systems

Reference manager software = $-$$$

Research is often collaborative – but most reference management solutions are not (or at least not very…)

Value: building up a library of references and papers to have on hand for use (including after degree(s) earned and library access no longer guaranteed)

Value: archiving not just articles & bibliographic data, but also document meaning and significance – and making it all easily findable and accessible

Page 3: RML Rendezvous - Zotero

What is Zotero?* A reference manager Works with open webpages and article databases (many

automatically through Zotero Site translators) and more Interoperable: Can import and export citations to EndNote and

other reference manager formats (via RIS standard) using multiple citation styles

Web-based collaboration and discovery/recommender tools

includes Microsoft Word 2003/7 plug-in for attaching citations (in “correct” style) to documents; also works with OpenOffice

Added value beyond citation: Allows tags, notes, and screenshots to be associated with articles & other resources

Can attach (and search) associated PDFs, and attach other items

From the Center for History and New Media, at George Mason University – open source

Adding Items to Your Zotero Library

A word about preferences…

Page 6: RML Rendezvous - Zotero

Open URL and Site Translators

Link Resolver(provides access to an appropriate copy for your users, if available, when it recognizes embedded COinSmetadata)

Zotero Item Record from browser-bar automatic capture (Open URL)

Does not capture everything that you might want…

Notice this one did not capture all important data – this will have to be filled in manually (why?)

Options for Adding Items to Your Zotero Library

In a Zotero-compatible database (Open URL and has Zotero SiteTranslator) Look for the icon in browser URL box

From a Zotero-compatible publisher Look for the icon in your browser URL box Generally will also download fulltext article PDF if available and

appropriate Zotero setting preference has been set From a PMID, DOI or ISBN

Paste in the number using Add Item by Identifier From a database that allows you to export reference files (via

EndNote/.ris format) Email the .RIS file to yourself then open or import it into your Z library;

Does Not Always Work, so have a backup! From the export as .RIS option in your link resolver

Email the .RIS file to yourself then open or import it into your Z library; Does Not Always Work so have a backup!

Manually – email yourself all the info or write it down; add later From a website (some websites have their own Zotero translators, e.g.

Flickr, YouTube, The New York Times) -

Added Value…

Saving webpages Webpage screenshots that can be

highlighted and annotated

Collections, subcollections, and group collections Tags and the tag selector box Notes Related – associate related items Locate and View

Searching: The Database of Me PDF, txt, and RTF basic and advanced Saved searches

Page 16: RML Rendezvous - Zotero

Tags: Organize and Connect

Filter by one or more tags

Add or edit tags – note autosuggest for consistency; tags can be content or process

Page 17: RML Rendezvous - Zotero

Notes: The Workhorse Tool

Why did you add this article, anyway?

Page 18: RML Rendezvous - Zotero

Search: The Database of You

Bibliographical info, tags, and notes Attached files that are PDF, txt, or RTF (!!!!) If a file isn’t a PDF you can convert it then upload and attach it If you scan a document it will be an image file – you can attach

it to a Zotero item record and then view it, read it, or print it in your Zotero library, but you can’t search inside its contents – you’ll need to convert it to PDF (Adobe Acrobat Professional, etc.)

Saved seaches – another way to filter

Zotero in the Cloud (2.x)

Requires creating a Zotero account Can sync your own sources between different computers (and

even save documents online with freemium storage options) Warning: It’s all or nothing at this time…

Can create groups and share citations with others (publicly or privately)

Can find and follow others with similar interests and use their public Zotero libraries as databases to find good resources – and add them to your library Profile and group search is pretty wretched at this time…

Can back your resources up on the Web (NOT a substitute for other methods of backing up!)
