Singing Out: Big Crazy World Never Give Up
End of Key Stage 2 objectives:• Express their views confidently
and listen to and show respect for the views of others.
• Children can explain how their actions have consequences for themselves and others.
Essential skills promoted in the session:• Self-reflection• Empathy• Active listening• Communication
Begin by singing Big Crazy World or Never Give Up Settling in: Display images of the world and some of its features: waterfalls, plants, orchards, mountains and seas.Pass around an item to denote the speaker, each giving an adjective to describe the world beginning with A (when a child cannot think of another beginning with A move to the letter B, C, D and so on.) It is likely that the group will give positive adjectives such as: amazing/awesome/abundant/breathtaking/brilliant/cool. *Differentiation: Do not feel tied to the alphabet if the group struggle, opening up to any appropriate adjective is equally relevant.Stimulus: Place a range of word cards into the centre of the circle that are unlikely to have been offered in the settling in phase: unfair/cruel/without/lonely.Key Question: What do these adjectives make us think about?Display an images or images of poverty.Key Question: Is it fair that this is happening in our world today?Give everyone the opportunity to share his or her own thoughts using an agreed sign that they are willing to share e.g. placing a hand in a giving gesture/showing a green card.Time for reflection: Key Question: If you could make one change that would lessen poverty what would it be? Positive conclusion: Share past successes that your school/group has had when raising money for a charitable cause. Emphasise to the children that we can all make a positive difference, be it big or small.
Continue the learning:Leave an ideas board in an accessible place and encourage children to add their ideas for making a positive change. Encourage creativity by allowing for both doable ideas as well as ideas that might currently be beyond us.
