About UsSEQUEL-Pomegranate treats mental health disorders, behavioral health disorders, teens referred to us in crisis -with suicidal or homicidal ideation, or psychosis, teens in need of shelter care, or facing juvenile court charges.
Our treatment age range is 12-17 year olds. Our facility spans 54,000 square feet and was
custom built for adolescent psychiatric needs in 2008, expanded in 2014, and acquired by SEQUEL
Youth and Family Services in October of 2016. SEQUEL-Pomegranate Health Systems provides
an intensive level of therapy that is both evidence- based and from a trauma-informed care
perspective. Asessments are multi-disciplinary under the direction of psychiatrists.
Treatment options include an integrative structured program featuring many opportunities to address specific client needs through individual therapy, group therapy, family therapy, art therapy, nursing and case management in a secure, residential treatmentfacility with medical/nursing care 24-7.

Acute Hospital
The acute hospital helps teens in crisis. Their care and treatment are directed and supervised by attending psychiatrists, CNP, and their multi-disciplinary treatment team. Referrals can be made by hospital emergency departments, or crisis centers, pediatricians and mental health professionals for direct admit. There is 24-7 monitoring and a small staff -to -patient ratio within a structured therapeutic environment. A stay is typically 7-10 days.
Services include:
• Psychiatric services are under direction of a psychiatrist and include availability of 24-hour, 7-days a week consultation of a psychiatrist or certified nurse practitioner in person and/or by telephone. Acute treatment team meets daily.
• Medical Service. Patients are seen by a physician or his designee for a comprehensive medical exam.
• Nursing services are under direction of a registered nurse with a bachelor’s or masters degree in nursing.
• Individual & family therapy is provided by licensed professional counselors and/or social work professionals.
• Group counseling may include client, family, therapist and/or caseworkers as needed.
• Art therapy services are provided by a Board Certified Expressive Art Therapist.
• Dietetic services by a licensed dietician is available as needed. A chef and full kitchen provide nutritious meals and snacks.

Acute Hospital AdmissionsAcute patients are referred through hospital emergency departments or crisis centers. They may also be admitted through pediatrician offices, counseling agencies, urgent care, family doctor, or schools- directly & state-wide. Admissions forms and video are on our website. All referrals for voluntary admission are reviewed by the acute nursing supervisor and the psychiatrist on duty for appropriateness. Call 800-476-0868 to speak with a nurse. The acute admissions team obtains patient’s demographic information for a timely admission. Acute admissions are scheduled upon confirmation, bed availability and meeting criteria.
Acute Outpatient & AftercareFollowing a stay in an acute hospital, its important to have follow-up care. SEQUEL-Pomegranate outpatient services assist with continuity of care. Each teen receives a 30 day supply of medication and an appointment with our outpatient department and/or an appointment with a psychiatric service provider within the community. Some patients are referred for residential treatment.

Medical & Nursing
Upon admission to SEQUEL-Pomegranate Health System’s programs, adolescents will receive the following:

SEQUEL-Pomegranate offers 24-hour nursing care and a psychiatrist and/or CNP is available 7 days a week. With the offer of a comprehensive range of services, SEQUEL- Pomegranate ensures that the adolescents under our care are receiving appropriate treatment and educa-tion for both their physical as well as their mental health needs.
GeneSight ®Testing by Assurex Health is DNA based personalized psychopharmacology based on how an individual metabolizes a medication. Using GeneSight® allows for a tailored medication match to get on the right treatment faster.
GeneSight analyzes a child’s genes to help the healthcare provider select which medications are more likely to work better for each child’s specific needs and less likely to cause side effects. There are GeneSight ® tests available for ADHD, depression, anxiety, bipolar disease or other behavioral health-care conditions. GeneSight ® testing is typically covered by insurance and/or by Medicaid.

Residential TreatmentWe treat mental and behavioral health disorders for boys and girls age 12-17. SEQUEL-Pomegranate is a secure residential treatment facility with 5 campuses on-site: Sathappan, Kennedy, Meena, Celso and Kaufman. A residential stay might range from 4-6 months +.
• Mental Health ConditionsSEQUEL-Pomegranate’s mental health treatment offers an integrated program including psychiatric and psychological evaluations, multi-disciplinary counseling services with both individual and group options, and an evidence-based medical model approach to treating the DSM mood, anxiety, and psychotic disorders in adolescents. We also offer DNA-based GeneSight® testing by Assurex Health-this is personalized, tailored psycho-pharmacology.
• Behavioral DisordersSEQUEL-Pomegranate’s behavioral treatment offers a structured program with special-ized training to decrease disruptive behaviors, address maladaptive thought patterns, and collaborate with probation and diversion officers, counselors and caseworkers.
• 45 Day Diagnostic Evaluation This service offers a comprehensive evaluation, including psychological and psychiatric assessments, as well as, stabilization/brief treatment for adolescents with a variety of emotional and behavioral problems.There are developmentally appropriate therapeutic activities in a closely supervised environment. Extensive opportunities for observation, assessment, and intervention are possible in this intensive setting.
Residential Treatment Center AdmissionsSEQUEL- Pomegranate takes referrals from physicians, shelter care, department of children service, schools, probation office, pediatricians, social work and mental health profession-als. Each patient and family is welcomed through the intake and assessment process. SEQUEL Pomegranate representatives inquire about the child’s previous treatment, clinical history and family information.
Admissions are scheduled upon confirmation of bed availability. It’s important to have signed consents to admit or treat.
Our clinical director reviews each admission, the adolescent’s unique needs, and treatment criteria against our current milieu, treatment methodologies, and bed availability. Insurance pre-certifi-cation must preceed approval.

• Emergency Shelter Care This program offers a 24-hour secure facility for adolescents; providing stabilization and effective transition for those who may have disrupted another placement or who are in current crisis. The goal of the emergency shelter care program is to:
• Provide a 24 hour secure placement option for youth that have met criteria to be removed from an established placement or dysfunctional home by children service.
• Stabilize the youth and prevent any further re-traumatization that may already come with the placement.
• Work collaboratively with families, kin, providers and referral sources to ensure a smooth and effective transition to community-based or other placements once a client’s needs have been identified.

Additional Programming
• PREP Program
PREP is Personal Responsibility Education to help teens succeed, prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV, and learn life skills to help with independent living. PREP is offered through a grant from ODH administered by Nationwide Children’s in Region 9 (Central Ohio). We received the Ruckus award at Nationwide for excellence in teaching. SEQUEL-Pomegranate is in its fifth year offering the PREP Program to its residential clients.
• Court-Referred TeensSEQUEL-Pomegranate offers programming for youth referred through the Department of Youth Services, DYS, as well as county juvenile and family courts.
• Alcohol or Drug/Substance Abuse counseling [AOD] includes:
• Psycho-educational groups, which teach about the different types of substance abuse.• Skills development groups, which practice the skills necessary to break free of addictions.• Cognitive–behavioral groups, which challenge patterns of thinking and action that lead to addiction.• Support groups, where peers can challenge each other’s excuses and support and encourage constructive change.• Process group psychotherapy which enables clients to rethink the rational and irrational choices and decisions that they have made which led them to the substance use.
Maryhaven is now offering alcohol and drug addiction group programming & education at SEQUEL- Pomegranate Health Systems. Maryhaven is a well-known treatment provider for alcohol and drug addiction in Central Ohio, accepting voluntary admissions, medical and court-referred clients. Maryhaven has operated in Central Ohio for over five decades and in that time, served over 175,000 people.

Outpatient ServiceTo assist in continuity of care, SEQUEL Pomegranate Health Systems offers outpatient services to adolescents. Outpatient services can include:
• Diagnostic assessment, • Individualized treatment recommendations and planning, • Individual sessions, • Family sessions, and • Medication management
Outpatient services through SEQUEL Pomegranate Health Systems is designed to be a bridge between acute care and/or residential treatment and linkage back into the commu-nity. By working with our nurse practitioners and therapists, adolescents and their families can expect comprehensive, professional, caring individuals whose purpose is to provide the best care to address issues such as depressive symptoms, behavioral problems, interper-sonal relationships, trauma, and other stressors.

Clinical ServicesSEQUEL-Pomegranate’s treatment programs are designed to serve the needs of adolescents with moderate to severe psychiatric symptoms and functional impairments. Most adolescents referred to SEQUEL Pomegranate have histories of multiple disrupted placements and mental health treatment including acute psychiatric hospitalization and stays at residential treatment facilities. To meet their need, SEQUEL Pomegranate lends the elements of the traditional medical and therapeutic community models of treatment including DBT/CBT informed therapy, EMDR, art therapy and NMT- Neuro-sequential Model Therapeutics by Dr. Bruce D. Perry, Trauma- informed Care.
A multi-disciplinary team, supervised by an attending child psychiatrist, therapist or nurse practitioner, directs the treatment and care of each adolescent and his or her family to benefit from a wide range of individualized and coordinated therapeutic interventions including pharmacologic, psycho-educational, cognitive behavioral, psycho-social, expressive, recreational and milieu therapies.
Our services include:
• Individual Therapy Each resident participates in individual therapy with her/his primary therapists, a licensed social worker or professional counselor, no less than twice weekly. • Family Therapy Family therapy is provided by each resident’s primary therapist. Weekend and evening sessions are made available for biological, adoptive and foster parents who must travel a significant distance to the facility. • Group Therapy Each resident participates in group therapy no less than four times weekly. Group therapy includes both dynamic and didactic modalities and cognitive behavioral therapies. • Milieu TherapySEQUEL-Pomegranate strives to sustain and continuously strengthen a therapeutic, mentoring and normalizing culture which is essential to adolescents’ efforts to recover from mental illness, learn to care for themselves and others and progress personally and socially.
• Social, Recreational, Expressive & Therapeutic Activities Residents are provided with opportunities for daily physical recreation, small and large group social events, arts, crafts, music and other expressive activities and community outings. Structured therapeutic activities include anger management, leisure education and social skills.
• Individualized Treatment All treatment and care are individualized and carried out in accordance with each resident’s individual service plan under the direction of his/her multi-disciplinary treatment team, directed and supervised by a child psychiatrist, therapist or psychiatric nurse practitioner.• CPSTCommunity Psychiatric Supportive Treatment services are focused upon the coordination of each resident’s individual service plan across SEQUEL-Pomegranate’s professional disciplines and departments and the resident’s custodial child welfare agency, biological, adoptive or foster family and home community. • Life SkillsSEQUEL- Pomegranate provides life skills assessments and programs for all residents 16 years of age or older and younger adolescents whose permanency and discharge plan is independent living. The life skills program is supervised by a licensed social worker or professional counselor and life skills groups are conducted by trained and certified staff.

Lumin/Westwood Academy
Accredited education when and where teens need it. There is a classroom on each campus-Celso, Kaufman, Kennedy, Meena, Sathappan, offering superior tailored education designed to help students succeed. Lumin Academy also includes a unit on martial arts, allowing teens to learn focus and concentration.
On-Site Education
Tutors from Columbus Public Schools are here to help teens succeed, to catch up in challenging subjects, to pass the GED. Providing tailored alternatives for students with special needs according to their IEP. Some students may elect to be trans-ported to their own school rather than attend on-site.
Middle and Senior High School Community Based Progam & Modules
SEQUEL-Pomegranate provides mental health curriculum onbullying prevention, suicide prevention, self esteem, teen dating violence prevention, abuse prevention, and life skills. Each downloadable module comes with a facilitator’s manual and a Power Point for educators, administrators and students. Therapists, CPSTs, and nursing staff are available for in-service training or on-site tours and workshops.
Education
Regular and special education programs are provided by SEQUEL-Pomegranate’s education partner Westwood/Lumin Academy. Education diagnostic and instructional services are offered both on-line in computerized classrooms and traditional paper and pencil modali-ties. SEQUEL- Pomegranate strives to assure residents have the resources and tools required to master basic academic competencies, especially literacy, and build upon them because education is the primary force for individual and collective progress and achievement in American society.
Please call your insurance company directly to verify if residential treatment for mental/behavioral health is a covered service prior to referral. [Pre-certification is helpful prior to admission.]

InsuranceSEQUEL-Pomegranate Health Systems accepts most private insurance or employer’s health plans with coverage for behavioral health residential treatment and/or acute inpatient psychiatric hospitalization, and referrals through County Children Service or the Juvenile Court System. We take Medicaid.
There is usually a limit on the number of days of insurance coverage- 30, 45, 60/year. SEQUEL-Pomegranate works with each utilization review team on a case-by -case basis.

Pomegranate doubled its acute hospital capacity to 20 beds in 2013, completed a residential expansion to 70 beds in 2014, and has continued to add programming, services- and other quality enhancements.
