Overview

As part of our efforts to continuously improve our operation, we are migrating from our existing polybag sticker

(PO, style, color, size) to a new barcoded version. To support the transition for us and our vendors, we have

invested in a web application to allow all parties to print onsite – given they have the label printer stock (paper)

and printer. This is now a mandatory requirement for all product – (all brands), direct and retail business – with

the exception for PRE‐PACK orders. There are no changes or additional labelling requirements to the pre‐pack

process.

The following document and user guide provides all of the necessary information you will require to install, print

and troubleshoot the application to successfully print.

NOTE: We have primary helpdesk provider to help support and transition all vendors and their details are as

follows.

When contacting support, please provide as much detail as possible. Include screen shots if possible. If it is a printing problem include the make, model and name of the printer.

Requirements

In order to begin you must have the following:

Thermal or Laser Printer. o Dot Matrix printers are not supported. o Some older Laser and Inkjet printers may not be supported

3x2” label stock (roll or sheet)

Printer drivers downloaded (varies between Thermal and Laser Printers)

Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Chrome Web Browser

Label Printing works best with a Windows PC – Windows XP SR2 or higher and Internet Explorer 7 or higher.

Printing from Internet Explorer uses ActiveX and requires that an ActiveX component be installed on your PC.

Your PC must be configured to allow JavaScript and one of two print modules.

Label Printing from a Windows PC with Firefox 3.0 or higher, Google Chrome 6 or higher is supported with a Java print module (requires Java v1.6.0.13 or later).

Apple Mac OSX with Safari 5 or higher or Firefox 3.0 or higher is supported with a Java print module (requires Java v1.6.0.13 or later) and a CUPS server.

Linux or other operating systems are not supported

These components/drivers will be accessible for the imports.com website as part of your setup. Printers Thermal label printers are preferred such as: Zebra ZT400 or Zebra GX420t Printing to LaserJet and Inkjet printers is supported but barcode quality needs to be verified using a hand scanner. Dot Matrix printers are not supported. And some older Laser and Inkjet printers may not be supported. Label Stock Label format for Thermal printers is 3x2” with semi glossy stock. Label format for Laser Printers is a sheet of 3x2” labels (2 columns of 5 labels each) with semi glossy stock.

STEP 1: Install the Appropriate “Bartender” Printer Driver Windows PC

- Install the appropriate Bartender printer Driver from Seagull Scientific’s website and configure your printer on your Computer (While you may already have a printer driver from the printer manufacturer installed on your PC, you will need to install one from Seagull Scientific in order for the printer to work with our application).

o If you are installing a Thermal Transfer Barcode Printer, reference Appendix A o If you are installing a Laser Printer, reference Appendix B o Accept the default name for the printer as suggested by the Driver Installation. o If you don’t find your printer in the list found here, email [email protected] and provide

them with the following information… ‐ Printer Make and Model (i.e. Zebra 105SL Plus) ‐ DPI for your printer (if thermal transfer) (i.e. 203 DPI, 300 DPI) ‐ How your printer is connected (i.e. USB Cable, Serial Cable, via your Network) ‐ If your printer is connected through your network, we will need to know the IP Address of the printer.

- Setup your printer with the appropriate Label Stock Mac OSX with Firefox or Safari (Chrome is not supported)

- When printing from an Apple OSX client the Common Unix Printing System (CUPS) must be used See Appendix C for detailed instructions

- Setup your printer with the appropriate Label Stock

STEP 2: Confirm that your Computer is set up to allow ActiveX or Java Components The ActiveX or Java Components will be installed when you perform a test print. You may need to adjust your browser security settings to allow installation. Or you may be prompted at install time. If you are using a Windows PC with Internet Explorer 8 or higher

Active X Troubleshooting

1) If your MSIE settings aren’t set to ignore ActiveX components, but instead are set to “Prompt”, you will see a faint beige strip at the top of the page informing them that the website wants to run the ActiveX component along with a popup message stating that the “BarTenderPrintClient is not installed”.

2) “RIGHT CLICK” on that beige strip and select “Run Add‐on” from the dropdown menu.

3) Click the “Run” button to install the ActiveX component.

4) After the ActiveX component runs and is installed, the screen should refresh automatically and the list of

printers should be displayed in the printer dropdown box. If prompted to install ActiveX component, confirm when asked.

If you are using a Windows PC with Firefox or Chrome or an Apple with Firefox or Safari

- Confirm that your computer is configured to allow Java component to run. Java Component Troubleshooting If you don’t have java 1.6.0.13 or later installed on your PC, you will be prompted to install it.

1) If you don’t have java 1.6.0.13 or later installed on your PC, you will be prompted to install it.

2) The first time attempt to generate the Polybag barcodes you should see a faint beige strip at the top of the page informing them that the website wants to run the Java component. Click on the button entitled “Always run on the site”…

STEP 3: Connect to J Crew Imports and Perform Test Print - Log on to www.jcrewimports.com. If you are unable to log on to J Crew Imports email

- Select the link “SETUP POLYBAG BARCODE PRINTER” from J.Crew Imports

- The first time you will be prompted to install ActiveX or Java components depending on your browser.

Details are explained in STEP2 above.

- Select your printer and the label stock and perform a print

- If you don’t see your printer on the list of available printers or you get an error that your printer isn’t set up correctly, please review the instructions in Step 1 for installing printer drivers. If you are still

If you experience issues with your printer skipping labels (printing blanks) or misalignment:

- Check that you are choosing the correct label stock. If you are printing to a thermal printer with a roll of 3x2 labels select 3x2 Rolls. If you are printing to a laser printer on an 8.5x11 sheet of labels choose Letter (8.5x11)

- Check the settings of "Media Type, Feed Mode and Pause" on the page of "Stock" in your printing preferences. (Generally applicable only to thermal printers)

o Print Method ‐ Use Current Printer Setting o Media Type depends on your label stock

Select Non Continuous (Web Sensing) if your label stock has gaps between the labels (NOTE: This is the most common label stock).

Select Non Continuous (Mark Sensing) if your label stock has marks on the back to indicate positioning

Select Continuous if your label stock is a continuous roll with no gaps.

STEP 4: Print Labels for a PO

1) While in the “Retrieve Purchase Orders” browse screen, you will notice a new column entitled “Polybag Bag Barcode Labels”. Click on the link entitled “Generate PolyBag Labels” for the PO you wish to generate barcode labels for.

2) A list of all of the SKUs for the PO will be shown, and the “Qty” field will be pre‐populated with the quantity requested for the SKU on the PO. You can change the individual quantities if needed, as well as select specific SKUs (i.e. if a reprint is needed), by checking or unchecking the checkboxes for each SKU. The total number of labels to be printed will be reflected in the “Total # of Labels” field at the bottom of the page. When you are ready to print the labels, click the “Submit Print Job” button.

How to Print Individual Labels (Or Single SKU)

3) Select your printer, then choose “3in x 2in Roll” if your printer is a thermal transfer roll printer, or “Letter (8.5in x 11in)” if your printer is a Laserjet printer using 8.5”x11” sheets., then click the “Print” button to generate the labels. If this is the first time you are attempting to print Polybag barcodes from your PC, or If prompted to install ActiveX or Java component, confirm when asked (see “ActiveX Troubleshooting” or “Java Component Troubleshooting” sections above).

Specific SKUs can be printed by ticking the checkboxes ONLY for the SKUs you wish to print. Change the quantity in the “Qty” fields accordingly, the click the “Submit Print Job” button.

1. What model / type of printer can be used to print the barcode label?

Printer examples that other vendors are using are:

Various Avery Dennison printer models Most newer Laser Printers can also be used. But some older Laser Printers and all dot matrix printers are not supported. Please check the printer documentation at here for the complete list of configured printers. If your printer is not on the list or if you are unsure whether your model printer(s) will be compatible with barcode labeling printing, please reach out to [email protected]. Provide the make, model, type (thermal, laser…) of your printer.

2. Is there a specific type or quality of paper that is required?

Any thermal or stock paper type that is compliant with the above printers should be acceptable. However, the requirements are that labels must be 3”x2” in size. Sheet labels are formatted for label stock with 2 columns of 5 labels.

3. What size is the barcode font?

Font and design of the barcode will be set by J Crew. Printed Barcode dimensions should be 2.5w x .75h. The code structure is 128; however, there is no requirement on your side except that you need to be able to test the barcodes for readability.

4. What level of quality is required in order to scan properly?

The attribute grading scale for barcode verification is A‐F. Quality C is a measure of standard barcode quality in order to be compliant with our distributions center. However, the most important attribute is that they must be readable by our scanners. Please be advised if the barcodes cannot be scanned, you will be charged back. We encourage you to test with a scanner with the appropriate code on site while implementing this process.

Barcode Printing works best with Internet Explorer 7 or higher. Firefox 3.0 or higher and Chrome 6 or higher are also supported on Windows. On Apple Mac OSX, Firefox 3.0 or higher is supported and Safari 5 or higher.

7. Are all operating systems (PC, Mac) compatible with barcode printing?

Appendix A How to install a Thermal Printer

Seagull Scientific (i.e. Bartender) Windows Printer Drivers Seagull Drivers are true Windows drivers. This allows them to operate with any Windows program and output to printers anywhere on your network. Written specifically for thermal label printers, they exploit thermal printing features that are unavailable using conventional Windows drivers. The drivers are available from the Seagull Scientific CD‐ROM or directly from the Seagull Scientific website: http://www.seagullscientific.com/drivers/windows‐printer‐drivers See details below for Models and drivers to install. Adding a Network Printer The Seagull Driver Wizard can be used for adding printers that are directly connected to the network and accessible via an IP Address. Each printer Alias (name) on the server must be unique. List of Currently Configured Thermal Printers on our servers

How to Add a Printer Using the Seagull Driver Wizard Clicking Download from the Seagull Scientific Driver page will prompt you to Run or Save. If you select Run you will be prompted to accept the Seagull Scientific License Agreement. Select the radio button to accept the license agreement and click Next.

You will be prompted for the directory to save the Drivers. The default is c:\Seagull. I you prefer to keep data on a different hard drive (say D or E) make that change now. Click Next.

Keep the checkbox checked to Run Driver Wizard after Unpacking. If Read installation instructions is checked the installation instructions will open in a browser window. Click Finish.

This will start the Seagull Driver Wizard seen below:

Select how you are connected to the printer:

USB – You will need to connect the printer before you can move on from this option. The computer must detect

that your printer has been plugged in otherwise you will not be able to use this option. When installing a USB

printer Windows may automatically install a non‐Seagull print driver. See Appendix D for help to correct this.

Network – Printer connected via a LAN or WAN connection with a reachable IP address or hostname.

Other – This option is used for legacy connections such as serial or parallel.

Select the printer model that best matches your printer. The normal naming convention is as follows for the

printer model in the Seagull drivers:

BRAND MODEL (DPI) – LANGUAGE

In this case I am selecting a Zebra ZM400 (203 dpi) – ZPL. That is a printer with a 203 dpi print head and using the

ZPL printer language.

If you selected either Network or Other for your printer connections you will see the following screen:

Here you need to either select an existing port to connect your printer to or you have to create a new port.

At this point, if you do not have a port configured, follow the below steps. Otherwise click Next and skip to page 7

Select a Folder if you prefer to Control where the driver is stored. Make sure When done unzipping open

USB select USB mode.

Appendix C: Installing a CUPS Printer on Apple OSX

1. Connect the printer you wish to use to the printer port (e.g. USB, TCP/IP)

2. As an Administrator user, open an Internet browser.

3. In the address bar, enter http://localhost:631.

4. Select the “Administration” tab.

5. Select “Add Printer”.

6. If prompted, enter your administrator credentials.

7. Select the required printer (See below for explanation) and click “Continue”.

a. Local printers such as USB connected devices will show under “Local Printers”

b. For Networked (TCP/IP) connected devices, select AppSocket/HP JetDirect

The Class ‘Name’ is what the application will use to match up the server’s printer queue. Make sure that this

matches the correct printer queue that you would like to use. (This description can be edited for the final guide

to reflect how we decide to communicate this to the vendors.)

The newly defined printer can now be used to print a label from JCrew Imports.

Appendix D Alternative Printer Installation Guide for Plug n’ Play

This guide was made with the assumption you are plugging in a printer that automatically installs a non‐Seagull

driver for printing.

If you are installing a USB connected printer such as one of the smaller Zebra GK or GX series printers, you might

have encountered the problem where Windows detects and installs default drivers before you have any option to

stop it.

This guide will show you how to use the Advanced Printer Properties and the Windows Driver Wizard to work

around the plug n’ play issue and allow you to use Seagull drivers with your printer.

1.) After you have installed your printer, right click the queue and go to Printer Properties.

2.) Select Advanced

3.) Click New Driver…

4.) Click Next. Then on the next screen, select Have Disk… at the bottom.

5.) Click Browse… and navigate to the <drive>\Seagull folder.

6.) Select the .inf file that matches what type of printer you are trying to install (i.e. Intermec, Zebra, etc.).

Click OK.

7.) Select the Model that you are replacing the driver with.

8.) On the next screen, select Finish. Accept any prompts that appear during the driver loading process.

There will be a short delay and then the new driver should be loaded and show in the drop down of the

available printer drivers.
