The Globalstar system can be schematized in THREE main parties or segments:
� Space Segment : • Constellation of 48 Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Satellites (+ 4 spares)
(Coverage from 70º North to 70º South with at least two Globalstar satellites commicating with every phone at any given time)

Call RoutingCall Routing
The call is relayed to the nearest satellite overhead
The satellite routes the call straight back to earth to the nearest Gateway
The Gateway is the interface with the local fixed (PSTN) and cellular (PLMN) networks
The call is routed via the local terrestrial network to its end destination

Due to the varying number of orbital planes, at any one time up to 4 satellites are in view
Handsets process signals from multiple satellites simultaneously
If signal is blocked by a mountain or a tree etc., the Globalstar system still processes the call with no user perceptible delays or depletion of quality

Real-time TrackingTo request the instant position of the tractor/trailers composing the fleetto track continuously, the location of each tractor/trailer and to show the location of a set of selected vehicles on digital cartography. An historical archive shall be maintained too.to provide a mechanism to alert the Dispatcher about unauthorised hooks and drops. Special reports shall be produced to be shown to the on site Dispatcher personnel
Tracingto log locally the main events of a trip and upload them to the Service Centre upon request of the Service Centre or periodically. The on-board equipment shall log each event of drop-and-hook, tractor engine start, tractor engine stop, etc. Each event shall contain the vehicle position.

Freight managementto collect data about cargo status (reefer temperature, etc.). to log goods load/unload operations and update the Dispatchers upon each change on these conditionsto determine alerts on the collected cargo and goods data (wrong set point, temperature out-of-range, loaded reefer not running, unbalanced trailer inventory, etc. ) and real-time alert the driver and the Dispatcher personnel at the Service Centreto provide the Customers with the access to shipment status through the Service Centre web site. An Internet-based load tracking provides access to continuous shipment status and location information, monitoring loads shipped with third-party carriers

Infomobility servicesTo provide drivers with personal communications services, including in-cab internet e-mail, SMS messaging, voicemailto notify the drivers (push mode) with information on weather conditions, unexpected events, disasters and other factors affecting effectiveness and efficiency of freight and material transit within different shipping lanes. to allow drivers to request information (pull mode) about delivery sites or other points of interest (public safety, breakdown and first aid services, restaurants, hotels, etc.) and obtaining back the related maps and route indications
