Streetscape Improvement Project Points of Departure, by artist Scott Oliver, consists of three unique, sculptural signposts located in the new plaza design at the corner of Masonic and Geary. Each signpost has arrows with place names and distances corresponding to responses from the community to a particular question. The place names were gathered through a survey distributed to pedestrians passing through the existing plaza during the week of March 9th, and an online survey; the artist collected approximately 600 surveys at the site, and 38 online. The surveys were also translated into and distributed in Spanish, Tagalog, Russian, and Chinese. Below are the place names sorted by post and by row. The place name is followed by the distance in kilometers and the bearing (direction). The text on the arrows will not include the bearing but will have a mileage equivalent. The bracketed, all caps, language indicates place names that will be translated back into their original language. Staff is requesting approval of the place names. The wording on each arrow may change a bit due to spatial constraints; the final, edited text and the layout of text on the posts will be approved by the Visual Arts Committee at a later date.
