A MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT

LOU RODINO

To All Our Poinciana Residents,

I hope you all enjoyed the Holiday Season and are ready to settle down for a very hap-py and healthy New Year. Our clubs and committees are working very hard to bring you activities that you wish to participate in. In my newsletter articles I have asked you for your feedback on what we can do to make our life at Poinciana more enjoyable. Your responses have been helpful. Mel’s Way has done a wonderful job in bringing in entertainment to Poinciana for those of us looking for a fun night out. At our last Poinciana Community Board meeting we passed a budget which author-ized additional funds for improvement to our golf course. Our golf course is over 40 years old and we have not replaced tee box-es, greens or sprinkler system. We are now at the time when this must be done, or we could lose our golf course. These are our responsibilities so that we can continue our way of life in Poinciana. The other items in our budget which I think needs explaining is the restaurant and the Poinciana Room. In 2018 the Bistro is required to pay us for utilities and a percentage of liquor sales. They are also responsible for the mainte-nance of the restaurant kitchen equipment. The walls in the Poinciana Room have been repaired and painted and the carpeting has been replaced. Our residents are now en-joying the clean fresh look of the room at community shows and events.

POINCIANA PLACE

CONDOMINIUM 3

by Ira Beckoff Happy New Year 2018 to All at Poinciana Place Condo 3 The parties are over, and the new year has be-gun. Thru December we shared cookies, ex-changed gifts and sang songs around the pool, both day and night. Thanks to both the Social Committee led by Laura Hoard and the new Morning Coffee Klatch group organized by Lynn Weber “Water, water dripping everywhere from my ceiling” said the voices on the urgent phone calls. Five units had water leaking into or out of their bathrooms. Throughout the last weeks of November, into mid-December, we worked hard to discover the source of the leaks and perform the repairs in both Buildings A and B. Our favorite plumber, Mark Grunow was here so often we thought he was a new owner. The list of affected owners includes the Barto-lones, Webers, Charlotte Levine, Katy Hooks in A and Anne Barber and the Garellicks in C. Thanks, your cooperation with our crews lets the repair work proceed. The association has a major responsibility for certain repairs and we fulfill that as quickly as possible. Good luck with the follow up repairs you must make to your units. We advise everyone to check their home own-er’s insurance policies. Make sure you have ad-equate coverage in case you suffer water, mold and physical damage to your bathrooms and kitchens. It can cost a lot more then you can imagine rebuilding these areas. Don’t save money on a low-ball insurance policy that will come back to bite you with only partial cover-age. In addition, electrical supply and elevator equipment problems were discovered and re-paired in Building C. The Birdie Social Committee is hard at work planning events for this year. Watch for post-ers and flyers with more specific information. There will be a Coney Island Fundraiser at the pool in January. After that the Board Appreci-ation Luncheon on February 17th will be held at the beautiful Atlantis Country Club. Look out for a daytime event on January 24th

at 10:00 AM presented by Morning Coffee Klatch and ServPro of Palm Beach. Topics will cover their services and other valuable condo life tips. There will be more info on posters next to the elevators.

By the time you read this we will have had our

Budget and Annual Owners Meeting. Let’s

hope that the meetings were civil and orderly.

PS. They were.

At Poinciana 3 your board is closely following

the changes made by the Florida legislature to

Condominium law in 2017. We are seeking le-

gal advice regarding adding or modifying our

documents regarding these changes.

It is also expected that discussion and investi-

gation will start and continue regarding the

painting of our buildings. Various painting

contractors and their technical advisers from

the paint manufactures are evaluating the

painting project and preparing bids. The build-

ings were last painted in 2007 after the Hurri-

cane Wilma rebuild. It is time for a fresh coat

of paint.

Finally, have you seen the new LED Parking

Lot Light between B and C on the sidewalk in

front of the Tinkess apartment? They gave it

rave reviews. It’s a test model to evaluate.

Much brighter, costs less to replace the entire

fixture then the old one and uses 70% less elec-

tricity to operate. Look after dark and tell us

what you think.

MAT YOGA, CHAIR YOGA

AND PILATES CLASSES By Ruth Cassell

All classes are held in the Commu-nity Room: Mat yoga: Monday at 10:00 AM, Wednesday at 10:00 AM (with Shannon) and Saturday at 9:00 AM (with Denise) Chair yoga: Tuesday and Friday at 9:30 AM (with Shannon) Pilates: Monday and Wednesday at 9:00 AM (with Shannon) Mat yoga meets three times each week in the Community Room. Yo-ga increases balance and flexibility. No experience is necessary as the teachers encourage students to

work at their own level and demonstrate pos-tures in several ways to prevent injury and to allow options for differing ability levels. If you are daunted by mat yoga, try chair yoga on Tuesdays or Fridays at 9:30 AM. It’s a new and evolving class that does yoga positions for flexibility and stretching without getting on the floor. Pilates focuses on core muscles, that is, every-thing from the neck to the thighs. The muscles become stronger, yet remain lean and flexible. We have been using light weights (1-3 lbs.), balls and bands. Shannon is always looking to keep the class interesting. Joseph Pilates believed that, “Everyone is the architect of their own happiness.” You’ll see its benefits and changes after a few classes. Each class is $5.00 and all you need is a mat and light weights (for Pilates) if possible.

transition from black and white to a color newsletter. We will get back to them to discuss the possibility of advertising in our newsletter

ART CLUB by Ruth Cassell

Our art group meets on Mon-day’s from 2:00-4:00 in the Community Room. There are artists of varying abilities and artistic tastes. Each works on

paintings of their choice. Our snowbirds have gone, so we have plenty of room for anyone who’d like to join us. Our core group grows each year as more folks become full time Flori-da residents. We are a helpful group who love to share ideas and materials, so if you’ve ever thought about painting, but have never tried, don’t wait, come by any Monday, and paint with us or just come by and see what we are doing. Everyone is welcome. We will continue to paint all through the sea-son, and are planning on trying some fun new projects. Please come by and see what’s going on. Hope to see you in class.

AMBASSADOR By Pat Sullivan

This past month I was in New Jersey visiting family and friends. I had a wonderful time but couldn't get warm. I have become a true Flo-ridian--or at least my blood has. It is good to be back. A few of our pool side bar-b-q's were cancelled due to the cold but we still found ways to get together. We have a steady group that enjoys playing Rummy-cube or just hanging together. From our condos it is great to see so many peo-ple playing and enjoying our golf course. We are also taking advantage of the delicious food and great entertainment offered at Mel's Way. Our annual meeting will be held on Wednes-day, January 10th in the Community Room. Refreshments will be served so please come and greet the New Year with your neighbors and friends. My fondest wish for all of you is that your New Year be filled with hope for the future, the laughter of friends, the joy of family, good health and fortune and peace for all.

DORCHESTER CONDO by Jackie Rome

With the holidays around the corner everyone seems to be busy either traveling or making plans to celebrate the New Year. The Dor-chester had a holiday party with good friends and neighbors. The food was excellent and although the man we hired for the music had to cancel, our neighbors Mary and Ron Jones saved the day. They had equipment and a mi-crophone, the whole set up, and great holiday music couldn’t ask for anything better. Mary, besides working, is also a COP; can’t thank them enough. On a sad note, Linda and Jim McKeown (Jim is president of our building) picked up Linda’s mother for Thanksgiving, as they do every year. The next day they had to call an ambu-lance for her and a few days later she passed away. So sad, but Linda’s sister, Nancy, did get to fly in from North Carolina and see her before she died. We have two condos that are no longer empty. We would like to welcome the Louis’Jeune family of three, and Eileen Massaro. We are looking forward to seeing them out and about. I am looking forward to the holiday party on the 19th from the Ladies’ Social Club and all the parties at our wonderful restaurant. Hope everyone has a healthy, happy new year.

THE GARDENS by Ken Main

A permanent fixture for the last five years here at the Gardens suddenly died on November 17th from an apparent heart attack. Joel Main knew so many and was always there to help anyone including me with the work here at the Gardens. Joel had his problems like we all do but he had so much good that outshine any of these problems. Joel was smart as they come and an excellent worker and without his help, I could have never accomplished what has been done here. This is especially true with the heavy items such as the removal of the six oak trees in the pool area along with many other things that needed to be done. We worked well together and at 47 years of age, he was taken early from us and will be missed by many. Two permanent residents have given me some help with Pat and Angel offering to do whatev-er they can since the passing of Joel and we do thank them. The pool is completed, and the outcome is ex-cellent, and we are very satisfied with the con-tractor Artech Pools, Inc. that is operated by Jairo Rojas. Another great guy to work with. The project was somewhat of a challenge for this guy (me) as I was not extensively knowl-edgeable of all that goes with the pumps, etc. But "as a new kid on the block", I'm still learn-ing. The landscaping within the pool area is basi-cally completed and looks extremely good as compared to how it looked previously. Many positive comments by all as to the outcome which are appreciated. We also can say this about the surroundings of the Gardens' com-plex. This is just a reminder that our residents should not be using the Townhomes pool. Nei-ther should the Townhomes be using our trash rooms. These things do happen when new resi-dents move into a unit not fully understanding the regulations, etc. Both matters have been addressed with Mark Roth. We wish to thank Arnie Main for the purchas-ing of some most beautiful pool furniture at a no interest loan to the Association. The double

strapped chairs, 16 chairs and 12 lounge chairs, consisting of blue and white double strapping matches the pool and the patio. Without this kind of participation, we couldn't have achieved our goal involving the pool and its surrounding area. Arnie has been here for 17 years and has always been a part of trying to have the Gardens attractive and a place we all can be proud of. Without his participation, we wouldn't have been able to have our pool looking beautiful as it is today. One last important thing. We are most im-pressed with MEL'S WAY BISTRO at the club-house. We just had breakfast there and there is nowhere can one get a better breakfast or an atmosphere than at MEL'S. We have lunch there once or twice a week and we can say the same about their lunches when it comes to price or quality. These things can happen when we have hardworking people with man-agement capabilities. When I speak of "management", this involves knowing what it takes to operated successfully and they have proven that. One should see MEL'S beautiful ads that I have seen on several TV stations and they are most impressive. We are most fortu-nate to have capable individuals operating this restaurant.

BARCLAY BITS By Ina Baron

As I write this, it is not quite Hanukkah and Christmas is two plus weeks away. The New Year is fast approaching and most of us are scrambling to get gifts in the mail so that they are delivered for each respective holiday. The lines at the Post Office are out of sight. Our Atrium is very festive with our Palm Tree decked out with colored lights thanks to Eva Mirek. It gives our atrium a pretty Holiday vista. Door sensors on our Elevator have been re-placed, so hopefully they will work properly and not have anyone stuck in there again. Work was also done on the roof.

ESSEX by Toni Mirobelli

A huge thank you is sent to all the Essex resi-dents who donated items which were given to the veteran’s hospital to distribute to Veterans who need some help during this holiday sea-son. A holiday party was enjoyed by residents on December 17th. Appetizers and desserts were served, and holiday music was also enjoyed. Grill nights will resume in January. Check the bulletin boards for dates. 2017 was filled with happy occasions and very sad losses, good news and bad news, opportuni-ties and challenges. I hope that however you celebrate these holidays which end the year, that you are doing it with people you love. Best wishes to everyone for a new year filled with family, friends, love and kindness.

SIT AND KNIT

It's another exciting season of Sit and Knit. Our knitters are not only doing donations for lo-cal charities, but they are also busy knitting sweaters, hats and other individualized projects. One easy and fast project that Luanne Utter is working on is Teddy Bears for local migrant farm workers' children. The Teddy Bears are also great gifts for new grandchildren or "great grands." Judy Pate has lent her patterns for

watch hats for mariners and a one-piece sweater for a "kid’s" charity. Sit and Knit recognizes those of you with a talent for quilt-ing, crocheting, embroidery,

and other needlework projects. Our motto is "the more the merrier." A special thank you to Evelyn Pratesi for her donation of needles and bobbins; and another thank you to Jan Stolzenfeld for her yarn dona-tion. So, ladies and gentlemen, turn off the soap op-eras, Fox News and CNN and join us in the Hospitality Room in the Clubhouse lobby at 1 P.M. on Wednesdays.

The unit owners had a meeting on the 7th of December for an election of officers. Unfortu-nately, there were not enough attendees to even meet a quorum. I believe it means that the existing officers are still on the Board. Res-idents, we cannot get things done if no one at-tends these meetings and voices their opinions. Next time a meeting is called, please plan on attending. If you need a ride, please ask a neighbor to tag along. Stand by for signing up for Dryer vent clean-ing. Last year the Board paid for it, this year we are to do it. While this is a good thing and helps prevent lint fires in the system, one of the things we should also consider is having the air conditioning system vents cleaned. The buildup of dust, pollen etc. is not good for peo-ple with allergies. I doubt they have been cleaned since the building was built. It sure would cut down on respiratory infections. In closing, I wish all a Happy Hanukkah, Mer-ry Christmas, and Happy and Healthy New Year.

LIBRARY by Pat Sullivan & Pat Elter

I always need to thank all the residents here at Poinciana for their generous contributions to the Library. The Library would not exist with-out all of you. Our Library is open 24/7 so please feel free to come in and browse whenev-er you can. Best wishes for a Happy and Healthy New Year.

HAMLET by Russ Donnelly

Well everyone seems to have arrived except for a few stragglers, who will return after Christ-mas. Our Wednesday barbecues are starting to return to a full complement. As a reminder to all our newcomers we barbecue every Wednesday, and all are welcome. By now you have noticed that our parking lots were redone, and I have received good vibes from the residents. I think the building looks great. Hopefully by the time you read this we will have planted our flowers for the winter season. Flowers always seem to make people happy. Our annual budget is about the same as last year, there will be no increases in our mainte-nance, please note that our annual meeting will be held again in Mel's Way on Sunday, February 11th at 11:00 AM. A complimentary light brunch will be served; please attend. We will again install Officers for the Hamlet Board and for the Hamlet Ladies Club. It is a good time to meet your neighbors, hope to see you there

POINCIANA TENNIS CLUB by Kathy Graves

Just wanted to show you what a determined group of players we have here at Poinciana (see photo below). This was one of our very few cool days in December and see how bundled up we are to come out to play (except for show off Avi in shorts). I don't think some of guys would miss play if they had to come out in blankets as they do love the game so. We welcome new player Serge Tremblay from Margate Bldg. Serge is not new to Poinciana, but has only this year had his schedule open to allow him to play team tennis with us. Our 2018 kickoff meeting is scheduled for Sun-day, January 14th at noon in the Poinciana Room with Mel's Way Bistro serving a buffet luncheon. This will be a business meeting/luncheon. On Sunday, March 11th we will hold our end-of-the season gala of buffet luncheon followed by special entertainment program featuring some of our own talented players--musical and other-wise. I believe we now have four or more piano players amongst us. More later about the show. We invite any tennis-playing Poinciana resi-dent to join us at the courts at 8:00 AM on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

SOCIAL COMMITTEE by Russ Donnelly

The Poinciana Community Group has two items on their agenda this year. We are again having "Night at the Races" which has been getting more popular every year. This year it will be held Friday, February 16th at 6:00 PM. I hope to see many of you there, our prizes have been increased and there will be a good time for all. Also, we are bringing back "Murder Mystery" this year. The theme will be Country Western "Murder in Tombstone”. It will be held Monday March 26th. Doors open at 6:00 PM. Allow time for your compli-mentary photo. Dressing the part and solving the crime has always been a fun experience for all. We are having this event in conjunc-tion with Mel's Way Bistro. It will be held in the restaurant, unless the attendance de-mands a larger venue, in which case, it will be moved to the Poinciana Room. Tickets are on sale now and we are having a great initial re-sponse. Our bulletins are posted in the Club-house and by Mel's Way. The Murder Mys-tery tickets can be purchased in the Poinciana Activities office or at Mel's Way. I don't know if me ads will be in this issue, it seems we have a format issue, any questions call Russ Donnelly 561-963-8252 check your bulletin board for more info, Thanks for your support

BOOK CLUB by Pat Sullivan

In December we read THE BEAN TREES by Barbara Kingsolver. I en-joyed this story about two friends and how they overcome the obstacles that life presents. On some level we can all relate to their resiliency and the strength they take from each other. In February we will be reading EVENING CLASS by Mauve Binchy. If you are interested in joining us, please come to our next meeting.

Meeting: Tuesday, January 2nd Time: 1:00 PM Place: Terrace Room at the clubhouse

May all of you have good health, discover a new author, reread some stories you have en-joyed and above all find peace and joy in the New Year.

A MESSAGE FROM ”COPS”

UNIT 39 by LT. Barbara Crespy

Happy New Year one and all from the C.O.P.S. Here at Poinciana! We are very happy to see the return of our snow birds! According to the Sheriff’s Office, our patrols have kept Poincia-na a very safe community. We are still in need of more volunteers, and are asking that each building find one, just one, person to join our Unit. Perhaps the President of each condo association can discuss this at your next meeting. We all enjoy the benefits of this organization and a commitment of 3 hours a week is a small responsibility. Hours are very flexible and can be broken up if three straight hours is too long for your comfort. Be safe and enjoy our fabulous winter weather! Lt. Barbara Crespy 215-813-7053 Cpt. POINCIANA PLACE

TOWNHOMES by Mark Roth

We held our Annual Member’s Meeting and our December Board Meeting on December 12th at 7:00 PM in the Community Room at the Poinci-ana Clubhouse. In the Member’s Meeting, the election of Board Members was held with Marc Menzie, Sidney Nelson, and Michael Reardon re-elected to serve three-year terms. At the or-ganizational meeting held immediately after-ward, Michael Reardon was elected as Presi-dent, Sidney Nelson was elected as Vice Presi-dent, Jeffrey Drucker was elected as Secretary, and Mark Roth was elected as Treasurer. At the Board Meeting, several topics were dis-cussed. The official minutes of the meeting will be posted to our web site (www.pptha.org) soon. Our January 9th Board Meeting will be held in the Terrace Room on the second floor of the clubhouse. There is much to be done for the community in 2018. Some of the projects that the Board is considering include: repainting all of our buildings, resurfacing the pool, replacing trees lost to Irma, and completing the rewrite of our Association Documents. We will be forming committees to assist the Board with many of these projects. We need your participation at our Board meetings to ensure that your views and ideas are heard and considered by the Board before the Board makes decisions. The time to put your two cents in is before the vote, not after. Our meetings are scheduled for the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 PM. Please set aside the time and plan to attend. Our web site at www.pptha.org is proving to be a valuable resource for those who use it and for the Board. Owners who have filed trouble tick-ets or made inquiries using the email to man-agement link have been most pleased with the response time and information received. Oth-ers have found the availability of community forms such as our Architectural Review Appli-cations very convenient. Some of the items of-fered on our website include Property Manage-ment Contacts, identification of the current board of directors, Minutes of our Recent Board Meetings, our Architectural Review Form,

CHAI HADASSAH

OF POINCIANA by Judy Kirschner

We hope that all our Poinciana residents are enjoying the holidays and this wonderful weather. We have a lot of thank you’ s to send out this month. We'd like to thank Mel’s Way for their tasty lunches and good service. Thank you to Mindy Dorffman for her attention getting table decorations. A big thank you to Judy Kirschner for planning such a great program for our December 14th installation and Chanu-kah party. Joan Baron, who is the immediate past president of the Florida Atlantic region was a large plus. We were lucky to have her as our installer. She did a superb job. It was very enjoyable listening to Linda Spitzer tell her Chanukah tales. We would love to have her back someday. Another thank you to my new board. They try to give you the programs you enjoy, while also educating us in the world of Hadassah. Our next event is our annual fashion show. It will be on January 11th at 11:30 AM. This year we are featuring fashions from Wildberries, modeled by our very own Hadassah members. Get your reservations! We're planning on hav-ing a fabulous day! January 25th is our ever-popular card party. Hope to see you there! Coming up on February 18th is the Follies show. It's a wonderful show that features gals our own age dancing in the most fabulous cos-tumes. WOW! Yes, we are having a women's Seder this year. We have an exciting cantor, who comes with her guitar and will be leading the service. More info to follow... Looking forward, please remember the Roz Se-raita has beautiful cards and tributes that can be sent out for all your different occasions. You can reach her at 966-3192. To all our Hadassah members and Poinciana residents, we wish you a safe, healthy and hap-py new year!

The site also advertises the date and location of the next scheduled board meeting and as the meet-ing approaches, the meeting agenda is often published. Along with our web page, we also maintain an email list that helps the board communicate inexpensively with our owners. We use the list to alert you to what is going on in the commu-nity and to keep you informed about scheduled maintenance and repairs that may affect your plans. If you have not already provided your email address kindly visit the web site, send an email to management and the board and indi-cate that you would like your email address added to the list in the comment section. The clean-up of the community after Irma is almost completed. There remain several patches of grass that will need some attention from our landscaper now that the damaged trees were removed. The Poinciana Community COPS patrol has been helpful is deterring crime in our commu-nities and recently they were helpful in provid-ing information that led to the apprehension and arrest of offenders that had committed a crime in one of our communities. The Sheriff’s Department provides the equipment that is used by the COPS to provide these patrols if we can produce enough volunteers to patrol at least a certain number of hours each week. Our COPS need more volunteers to insure con-tinuation of the patrols. The minimum com-mitment is three hours per week. Hours are very flexible and can be broken up if three straight hours is too long for your comfort. If you can spare some time, call Lt. Barbara Crespy (215-813-7053), Cpt. Jay Whitman (561-727-5633), or Sgt. Rich Rosen (267-242-5231). If you have a topic that you would like the Board to consider, please send us an email at [email protected].
