Poinciana Today JULY 2018 A MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT LOU RODINO It looks like we are getting ready for our hurricane and rainy season. Our last affair was a success (Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony). Now we have work to continue including a new fence in the cart barn area, new roofs for the golf course restrooms, new lighting for our Country Club parking lot, and clean- up and trimming of trees on the golf course. We cannot do much of this work until the ground has dried up some otherwise the trucks and heavy equipment will put actual ruts in the golf course. These projects will proceed as weather permits. We still have a lot of work to do to keep our Country Club going. We are out of debt with all mortgages, loans, etc. as they are all paid. This alone should help us for the next budget. A MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT

LOU RODINO

It looks like we are getting ready for our hurricane and rainy season. Our last affair was a success (Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony). Now we have work to continue including a new fence in the cart barn area, new roofs for the golf course restrooms, new lighting for our Country Club parking lot, and clean-up and trimming of trees on the golf course. INDEX OF ADVERTISERS ACTIVITIES OFFICE by Kathy Graves

As you may know, we've reduced our office hours somewhat and are now only open on Wednesdays and Fridays from 10:00 AM to1:00 PM for the summer. With the restaurant be-ing closed on Mondays, the clubhouse is usual-ly very quiet so it only made sense to give the gals that day off.

All of us in the office are really looking forward to the big Fourth of July event coming up on Wednesday, July 4th, to be held at Mel's Way from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Our office gals are great supporters and promoters of clubhouse events and urge all our summer residents to join us on the 4th. Tickets are only $10.00 per person each with a great menu of hot dogs, hamburgers, salads, all fixings, dessert, and beverage. There will be games, raffles, and contests--inside and outside by pool--see Chan-nel 63 for more details. Purchase your tickets at Mel's Way.

Last year I took my 10-year old grandson and he was the winner of several of the games. He was beaming from ear to ear and wouldn't miss it this year for anything. So, round up your family and come along for a fun day and treat yourself to a day off from cooking. Buffets and games to be set up outside by pool as well as inside in a/c for those preferring.

Here's wishing you a great summer, Karen Bandle, Jamison; Ina Baron, Barclay; Ellen DeMaria, Carlisle; Sheila Eastman (sub), Patio Homes; Diane Femia, Town Homes; Yvonne Lefebvre (sub), Birdie C; Pat Murray, Margate; Judy Pate, Birdie C; Sue Sansolo (sub), Hamlet; Luanne Utter, Town Homes; Connie Van Valkenburg, Birdie A. ☼

a seasonal publication. We are now a monthly publication and switching to a calendar year. For those advertisers that wish to extend their ads through December, we have special rates available. Thereafter all ads will run January-December. Please send us an email or con-tact Pat Sullivan for additional information. If you have not extended your advertis-ing subscription through the summer, your ad will no longer appear.

We are always looking for more advertisers for our newsletter. We would like to generate enough revenue to transition from black and white to a color newsletter. If you frequent nearby businesses that might benefit from ad-vertising in our Newsletter, show the owner or manager your copy of the newsletter and en-courage them to email us. We will get back to them to discuss the possibility of advertising in our newsletter.

The newsletter can be delivered to you via email whether you are here or anywhere else in the world. This is a free service. The emailed copy is in addition to the printed copy you currently receive. To enroll, simply send an email to [email protected] and include the word “Subscribe” in the subject field.

Please provide feedback by sending an email to [email protected] or by drop-ping a note into the Newsletter box in the out-er Activities Office. Suggestions may also be sent to this email address. ☼

EDITOR’S NOTE by Ted Suss and Mark Roth

As a companion to our newsletter, the Poincia-na Community Group has launched a new web p a g e w h i c h c a n b e f o u n d a t www.poinciana.club. Our recent newslet-ters can be accessed for reading or downloading from this web site. If you represent a Poincia-na club or organization and would like to have a page on the web site promoting your group, s e n d a n e m a i l t o w e b m a s [email protected].

We encourage our communities and clubs to make more use of our pages by announcing up-coming events in your communities, so we can be of more service to our residents. Please be sure to include all your events for the upcom-ing issue and don’t forget the location, date and time so we can list it properly in the calendar. Before you submit the article, please have someone from your organization proof read it for accuracy. Also, if you would like to write a recurring column, please send your proposal to [email protected].

All copy, articles and updated advertising must be submitted via email and are due by the 15th of the month before publication. Thus, the con-tent for the August issue should be submitted on or before the 15th of July. Articles must be submitted via email to [email protected]. Our preference is that articles are prepared in Word or an equivalent using the CenturySchoolbook font in a 12-point size. Once your article is received, it will be edited, and a copy of the edited version will be returned to you for your review.

Businesses who want to advertise in our news-letter may inquire via [email protected] and a representative will contact you with availability and rates or call Pat Sullivan in the Poinciana Community Group office, (561) 439-4733. Many of our ad-vertisers purchased their ad space for nine in-sertions (October through June) when we were

We completed an owner organized group dryer vent clean up. Over 60 owners joined together to get a discounted price. Thanks to Flo Fein-berg, Joan Weinberg, and Helen Greenberg for spreading the word, collecting the funds and supervising the work. We also thank David Rubin who helped negotiate a great group price. Normally an $85.00 individual charge, each of us who signed up paid $30.00. If you go to the two links below you can see two short video clips of the built-up lint dust being blown out of the vents, a real fire hazard if not removed. Looked like a snowstorm in Florida. Click on the link if you are reading this on line or copy and paste them into an internet browser. Dryer vents cleaning videos: https://vimeo.com/273378214 https://vimeo.com/273381124.

You may have to click on each link separately to see both clips. Finally, the painting contractor has been cho-sen for the repainting of all three buildings from top to bottom. The boards choose Mario Painting on the recommendation of the paint-ing committee. Mario Painting is the firm that did our last excellent building painting over 8 years ago. There will be a special as-sessment to pay for the almost $100,000 cost of the job. You should have received a letter notifying you of the unit owner’s special as-sessment amount. The painting is to be com-pleted by the end of 2018, unknown events permitting.

Hope you are having a great summer wherev-er you are when you read this column. ☼

POINCIANA PLACE

CONDOMINIUM 3 by Ira Beckoff

They are really all gone, the snowbirds of course. New year-round owners spending their first summer at Poinciana 3 are always shocked by the site of empty condo parking lots. If you haven’t been here in the summer, you would be amazed at how few cars are on the streets and highways.

The rain has replaced the cars. Normally the afternoon rains start in August. Almost every afternoon between 3:00 and 4:00 PM the skies open up. This year afternoon rain began in June; the good side is the plants and grass look terrific.

June always brings hurricane scare predictions. NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center is forecast-ing a 75-percent chance that the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season will be near- or above-normal. They predict a 35 percent chance of an above-normal season, a 40 percent chance of a near-normal season, and a 25 percent chance of a be-low-normal season. I’d prefer to be optimistic and hope for the best, so I’ll choose the low 25 percent odds. Fingers crossed, just like every year.

George and Alex told me that they have stocked up on hurricane preparation supplies. We have sheets of plywood, lengths of furring strips, wood screws and battery powered tools ready for boarding up windows. Heavy coils of rope to tie down all the chairs etc. at the pool have been purchased. Extra gas is stored in fuel con-tainers, so we can run our portable generator and keep the rechargeable tools and golf cart charged. It’s not easy to get gas during a hurri-cane. Don’t forget to have a full tank of gas in your car if you think storms are coming. We always hope that we never have to use these supplies and can store them till next year. Hurricane season also reminds us that this is an excellent time to check your home owner’s insurance. Check with your agent to make sure you have sufficient coverage for any emergen-cies.

COPS” UNIT 39, by Lt. Barbara Crespy

Dear Poinciana,

Welcome to hot summer and hurricane season! Our message to you to-day is to stay hydrated! It is very easy to be-come dehydrated in the heat and humidity, so drink your water. In case of hurricanes, stay in a protected area, and do not venture out until it's safe. Our COP Unit will not patrol during severe weath-er and will resume when we are given the all clear. We are always in need of new volunteers, and summer time is especially a difficult time. Please contact any officer and have all your questions answered.

WE NEED YOU!

Keep safe and well hydrated this summer

BOOK CLUB by Pat Sullivan We had the last meeting of the Poinciana Book Club on Tuesday, June 6th. Thank you again to all our wonderful members who are always so willing to share their life experiences, offer their

thoughts and observations, bring their insights about the characters behaviors and in general help make it a great experience for all the members.

Our next meeting will not be until October of 2018. We are changing the format so keep your eyes on this space for more information to follow. Best wishes for a happy and safe sum-mer. ☼

I hope everyone is having a wonderful sum-mer.

There will also be coleslaw, macaroni salad, fruit, brownies, and cookies. The cost is $19.00 per person. Please RSVP to Mindy Dorffman (561) 328-8977. Mail your check to her at 3442 Stanton Ter-race, Lake Worth, Fl 33467 or you can always leave it in the Hadassah mailbox. Invite your neighbors and friends. Guests are always wel-come. Bring your game!

Thank you for supporting Hadassah! ☼

DORCHESTER CONDO by Jackie Rome

It’s a quiet time around the Dorchester this time of year. Almost all our snowbirds are gone for the season. Hopefully the board will get lots done in time to welcome them back. Thank you to Zona Castrllsno and yours truly, the beautification committee did a great job. Because of all the rain storms some plants died but will be replaced shortly. The trees have been scheduled for cutting for June but because of weather may be delayed until July. We hope to have the building power washed soon just waiting for company to schedule it. Some more of the rust on building has been removed and gutters cleaned.

We are looking forward to one of everyone’s fa-vorites getting out of rehab and coming down to pool with his Della. After Henry’s surgery was finished and she knew it went well, she flew off to Boston to see her oldest granddaughter grad-uate high school. Henry’s daughter Karen and Henry insisted she go and Karen has been keep-ing him company. We are also sorry to hear that Rhoda Rothschild is moving out of the Dor-chester, Rhoda has lived here for many years, but the good news is she won’t be too far away.

Well, until next month, see you at Mel’s Bistro.

CONDO 1 & 2 Jamison, Kendall, Lenox, Margate,

Norfolk, Oxford & Princeton. by Janice Standifer

Summer is here!

Our elevator modernization project is back on track and moving along nicely. The new eleva-tors are running great and look beautiful too. There is still some work to be done on the ones that are running, but we’re pleased when each is returned to service. As of mid-June, when this article was written, the Margate South, Princeton North and Oxford North elevators are operational. Kendall and Margate north are currently under construction. We have con-tracted for overtime labor to do the work in the Jamison, Kendall, Lenox, and Norfolk build-ings, as these buildings have only one elevator each. Please check the notices in your lobby about how to prepare for these times; don’t wait until the last minute to prepare. We regularly post updated schedules in your lobby and on our website as soon as we receive the infor-mation from the elevator company; please look for this information in these locations. You will always know as soon as we know. Your pa-tience is greatly appreciated for this much needed improvement.

Our grounds look great, the regular fertiliza-tion, pest and weed control, along with the summer rain have certainly made a difference. It’s almost hard to believe that this is our grass and shrubs -greener than ever and always trimmed.

To our year-round residents, please continue to support our Golf Course and Mel’s Way Bistro. They bring life to our community and we thank them.

Our pool is beautiful, and the water is crystal clear – enjoy!

Weekly BBQ has been suspended for the sum-mer and will resume sometime in September. Please check the bulletin board in your lobby.

For the most up to date information, please register for our new website at www.poinciana1and2.com. Our website com-plies with the Florida statute for a secure web-site. You will need to cr eate an account with your email and a password of your choice. We

will verify that you are a resident and approve

your account. You will then have access to all

required documents, reports, minutes and up-

dated information. ☼

ART CLUB by Ruth Cassell

Our art group meets on Monday’s at 1:30 PM in the Communi-ty Room. We paint, through the summer,

to inspirational music, and connect with each other.

There are artists of varying abilities and artis-tic tastes. Each works on paintings of their choice. Most copy pictures that we like or have taken. Many of our snowbirds have gone, leav-ing the year-round core for the summer. There’s always room for new artists.

Come by and join us or see what we’re doing. ☼

AMBASSADOR by Pat Sullivan

Besides our weekly Rummikub games poolside everything is quiet at the Ambassador. If the rain ever stops, we will finally be able to com-plete some of our painting projects.

Two of our residents, Sandy and Annette had an enjoyable and informative day trip with the Men's Club. They had a tour of the Lowe Mu-seum at the University of Miami, lunch in Lit-tle Havana and a tour of Coral Gables. Check your bulletin board for other great trips that the Men's Club has planned for this summer.

Mel's Way is having their 2nd annual Fourth of July party at the Clubhouse. Last year was fun with dancing, games and great food. Check their displays in the lobby of the Club-house for information about all the entertain-ment they have planned for this summer.

Happy 4th to one and all! ☼

ESSEX

by Toni Mirobelli

Condolences are sent to the family of Myra Stone who recently passed away. Friends visit-ed with Ken Stone before he moved to Rich-mond, Virginia to be close to his family. Myra and Ken will both be greatly missed.

Trees around the Essex property have recently been trimmed in preparation for the hurricane season. We will soon have a meeting with Floor Captains to discuss emergency plans. Your in-dividual hurricane plans, and supplies should be in place as this is expected to be a busy hur-ricane year.

We will continue doing repairing, cleaning, and painting projects to keep our building looking nice.

The social committee strives to plan dinners and activities which are fun and enjoyable. If anyone would like to be on the social committee or would like to suggest an idea, please get in touch with any member of the social commit-tee.

Deb Lingenfelter, who drives a COPS vehicle once per week, is now training to be part of the PBSO Cops Airport Unit. When training is completed, she will volunteer once a week at the Palm Beach International Airport. The COPS unit can always use additional volun-teers to assist in keeping our community safe.

Happy Independence Day to all. ☼

IMPERIAL BUILDINGS 8 & 9 by Lou Rodino

Our buildings are quiet as all our Canadian friends have left as well as other homeowners. Most of them will return in October. In the meantime, our homeowners that are here are enjoying our swimming pool going down to the beach of course if it is not raining or thunder or lightning.

Our shuffleboards courts are being used as they have been all redone and are great to play on.

The June newsletter was a success as the Me-morial Day Parade and festivities went on without any rain. Luck was on their side as it stopped raining just before in the AM and dried up enough for them to continue the fes-tivities.

We have three units for sale and the home-owners would like to see them sold before the end of the year. Hopefully that will happen real soon.

Well there is no more to say and will see you in August. ☼

Poinciana Plates by Toni Mirobelli

Esther Ciccioli of the Essex is a wonderful cook. One of the dishes she is well known for among her family, friends and neighbors is her Chicken and Dumplings. On most Sundays, Es-ther's family joined her for this special dish. One Sunday when Esther's four-year-old granddaughter, Lauren, arrived for dinner and learned that Grandma was serving brisket in-stead, Lauren burst into tears and was incon-solable. Lauren is now a recently engaged young lady, but the entire family still remem-bers that Sunday! Esther, 93, grew up in Cul-ver, PA and lived in Bridgeton, New Jersey for many years before moving to Florida three years ago. Esther has two children, Joyce and Merle. They are proud to share another fa-mous recipe from Esther for her delicious, from scratch, Chocolate Cake:

Quick Chocolate Cake

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray and flour 9” x 13" cake pan.

Mix these dry ingredients in a bowl: 3 cups flour 2 cups sugar 2 tsp baking soda 1 tsp salt 1/2 cup cocoa

Add these liquid ingredients: 3/4 cup oil 2 tsp vanilla 1 tsp vinegar 2 cups cold water

Mix by hand, do not beat. Put in pan and bake for 48 minutes.

Icing: 1 stick butter 1/3 cup milk 1 lb powdered sugar 1/2 cup cocoa (can do up to 2/3 cup if you like) 1 tsp vanilla extract

Melt butter and stir in cocoa. Alternately add powdered sugar and milk, beating to spreading consistency. Add small amount of additional milk if needed. Add vanilla. Yields about two cups of frosting. ☼

POINCIANA TENNIS CLUB

by Kathy Graves

As much rain as we experienced here in May and June, we almost always got in our early morning play on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. The weather seemed to always be kind to us as the rain would hold off until we got in our play. Then for the most part, it would start raining late morning or afternoon and sometimes keep up for rest of the day. So, we consider ourselves very fortunate so far this summer.

We never fail to field at least one court in the summer and sometimes have had enough players for two courts. There's always a cou-ple extra players, so we take turns rotating in. Sitting out occasionally is often welcomed as very warm now and many days are very mug-gy. Our new ceiling-type fans under our awn-ing are appreciated as well as our cold-water fountain.

Since we are a social group as well as a tennis group, we try to get together to socialize when we can. During the year, in addition to our two big social events, we hold a couple of pizza parties at the courts or maybe just have breakfast together at Mel's Way following ten-nis.

On Friday, June 15th, for the first time, we tried a breakfast at the courts of blueberry pancakes. Kathy made the syrup with whole fresh blueberries up ahead of time and then we cooked the pancakes on a griddle when players were ready to eat. We had 10 mem-bers attending (see photo – left to right – Lu-anne, Sol, Larry, Willie, Peter, Kathy, Ana-toly, and Dennis – not pictured Ennio and Al.)

POINCIANA PLACE

TOWNHOMES by Mark Roth

We held our May Board Meeting on May 8th at 7:00 PM in the Terrace Room at the Poinciana Clubhouse. At the Board Meeting, several top-ics were discussed. The minutes of the meeting will be posted to our web site (www.pptha.org) soon.

Our next regular board meeting will be held on July 10, 2018 at 7:00 PM in the Terrace Room on the second floor of the clubhouse at 3536 Via Poinciana, Lake Worth, FL. Notice will also be posted at our pool bulletin board. Due to the cut off date for newsletter copy, we cannot report the June Board Meeting summary in this issue.

Much of the May meeting was taken up dis-cussing the status of our proposed document revisions. A summary of the proposed changes has been sent to the owners and a Special “Town-Hall” style Board meeting with legal counsel present is scheduled for July 17th (one week after our regular July Board meeting) for explaining the changes and answering any questions that our owners may have. In addi-tion, owners will be able to ask questions of the Board in advance by sending an email to [email protected]

The Board has obtained quotes for the replace-ment of the electrical system beneath our pool canopy which is rusted out. The system is being shut down until it has been replaced.

The pool resurfacing which began on June 3rd, has been completed and our pool is open for business.

Our painting project is completed; however, the Board is not 100% satisfied with the work per-formed. The Board is working to have the con-tractor return to perform any required touchups. If your unit requires a touchup, visit our web site at www.pptha.org and use the “Send Email to Management & Board” Link at the left selecting the subject “Painting Touchup”, and describing the deficiency. Alter-natively, you can send an email to [email protected] or call management.

The Board is formulating a program to replace many of the trees that were removed by, or after, Irma. Additionally, the board will be consulting with our arborist to identify those trees that threaten our buildings, so we can be proactive about removing dangerous trees and replacing them with nonthreatening trees be-fore our buildings are damaged. This project will be discussed at a Board meeting when we have more information.

Our web site at www.pptha.org is a valuable resource for those who use it and for the Board. Stay up to date by visiting our web site regularly. While there, use the link at the bottom of the page to join our Email Notifica-tion List.

Please report any concerns or necessary re-pairs that we may not be aware of by using the "Send Email to Management & Board" link on the left side of the home page. The link on the web site to contact management and the Board is there to report issues that MUST be dealt with quickly to avoid additional harm or destruction or for reporting perceived bill-ing errors. Questions to management or the Board may be submitted but may not be re-sponded to quickly and may be better ad-dressed during the open forums after the con-clusion of Board meetings.

If you have a topic that you would like the Board to consider during one of our Board Meetings, please send us an email at [email protected] so it can be considered for the agenda. ☼

YOGA AND PILATES CLASSES

by Ruth Cassell

All classes are held in the Community Room:

Note the summer schedule changes.

Mat Yoga: Monday at 10:00 AM, Wednesday

at 10:00 AM (with Shannon) and Saturday at

9:00 AM (with Denise)

Chair Yoga: Cancelled for the summer

Pilates: Wednesday at 9:00 AM (with Shan-

non)

Mat yoga meets three times

each week. Yoga increases bal-

ance and flexibility. No experi-

ence is necessary as the teach-

ers encourage students to work

at their own level as they demonstrate postures

in several ways to prevent injury while allow-

ing options for differing ability levels.

If you are daunted by mat yoga, try chair yoga

on Tuesdays or Fridays at 9:30 AM after the

summer. It’s an evolving class that works on

positions for flexibility and

stretching without getting on

the floor.

Pilates focuses on core mus-

cles, that is, everything from

the neck to the thighs. The muscles become

stronger yet remain lean and flexible. We have

been using light weights (1-3 lbs.), balls and

bands. Shannon is always looking to keep the

class interesting.

Joseph Pilates believed that, “Not only is

health a normal condition, but it is our duty

not only to attain it, but to maintain it.” You’ll

see its benefits and changes after a few classes.

Each class is $5.00 and all you need is a mat

and light weights (for Pilates) if possible.

Hope to see you there. ☼

We welcomed Peter Reese who came in the night before from NY and joined us for play and fellowship on Friday. He will be visiting here for a week. Our summer regulars of Den-nis, Luanne, Larry, Willie, Anatoly, and Kathy enjoyed the get together.

We have players all summer coming and going on vacation or short trips. Victor went to NY to family for three weeks in June, Linda S left for two week’s vacation in June, Willie will leave for three weeks in July to visit family in NJ, while Linda B will be returning from the Baha-mas at end of June as will Susan be returning from Peru then.

We welcome any new (and old) residents to join us at 8:00 AM on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at the courts. ☼
