I have been made aware of at least 2 Residents who have had their bank accounts emptied from a telephone / computer scam. The criminals who instigate these scams are very believable, they are often female, sound Australian, appear warm and professional over the phone. They may even offer to transfer you to a Manager or have their Manager call you back just to reassure you. If anyone ever calls you and asks for the following information, you should consider that it is probably a scam.

Asking you to “confirm” personal information such as date of birth, driver’s licence or

medicare number,

Asking you to access to your computer “just to check” that you haven’t been subject to

suspicious activity.

Asking you to put a password into anything on your computer while you are on the phone to

them.

Saying there has been ‘suspicious activity’ on your credit card and asking you to confirm the

card number or expiry date.

Asking you to send itunes or gift cards as payment

Claiming to be the tax office about an overdue payment or refund you are due

Claiming you could be arrested if you don’t pay an overdue bill or fine

If you are worried that there may be something wrong with your credit card, there is always a proper bank telephone number on the back of the card. You should hang up from the scammer and ring the bank using their number to enquire.

A Bank, Local Council, South East Water or Telephone companies will not ever call you just to confirm your details. If you do receive a call, just hang up. People who argue with them or yell at them have been known to experience multiple calls or calls through the night.

The NBN installation is happening in our area and we know that scammers target rollout areas. There were only 4 Residents in the Village not on the Village telephone system and they have all received letters from Cheryl. Everyone else living in the Village is not affected by the NBN rollout and should regard anyone ringing about the NBN and advising your phone is about to be cut off as a probable scammer and hang up.

If you are worried that the caller may be genuine and want to check, find out which company they are from and then hang up. Look up the company’s proper telephone number in the whitepages (this is available online or on paper) and call them directly. Do not use the number that the potential scammer gives you. If you can’t find the number, please ask your Hostess to help you look up the right number to call. Kim Jackson Executive Manager

The Australia Day festivities went off very well, it was very warm but good company and the music made for a lovely day. Our activities have started with Adelphi Fashions and the Mattress Man then K.I. Fashion Parade (formerly Givoni). The weather has been rather hot and it took some time to keep the watering up to the gardens, also very hard to sleep on those very humid nights.

Have you been thinking about becoming more active and wanting to do some age appropriate exercise? Possibly your doctor has suggested you be more active? Each Monday morning at 10am, I, Bryannah, run a seated exercise class. Running for one hour the session includes a short warm up, 15 different activities completed for about 3 minutes each, then a gentle stretching cool down. The activities are all designed to improve strength and balance, allowing you to remain independent in your unit for as long as possible.

All exercises are completed at your own pace, so if you become tired you can rest as needed, or keep moving the entire time if you desire. The only requirement is being able to stand and walk to the next pair of chairs. For most activities there is a simpler seated option and a more challenging standing option. As an Accredited Exercise Physiologist I am trained to modify and adapt activities as needed to any issues you may have. This is a very fun and social group with lots of laughing and conversation over a cuppa afterwards. Many new residents to the village have found it to be a great way to meet new faces. Cost is only $5 per person (including a cup of coffee) and is held in the Grant Centre beside the chapel. Individuals must reside in a unit or apartment in the village to be eligible to attend. You are welcome to come and observe a class before deciding to join. Bryannah

Congratulations to the Village Lawn Bowling Team who finished their season on top of the ladder. A position they held for the whole season. Best wishes for the finals. Keep your eye on the Green Room notice boards for results

Feed the bins not the birds. While it can be a pleasurable experience to feed the birds, we must remember that they are wild animals and feeding can do birds a great deal of harm. Feeding wildlife inappropriate foods, like bread, rice or food scraps can cause dietary problems and sickness.

Most people feed birds out of a misguided desire to care for them. Feeding native birds is strongly discouraged as it can lead to health problems or even death for the birds, and issues such as mess and noise for neighbours.

Plant locally native shrubs to encourage nectar-feeding birds. Provide a sheltered bird bath or nest box safe from predators and pets, rather than food.

Hand-fed birds are susceptible to illnesses that can be transferred to other birds. Young birds lose the ability to forage for food and when not fed by humans may starve. Hand feeding can also affect bird breeding cycles.

Hand-fed birds take over - populations of some birds such as crimson rosellas increase, displacing other birds and mammals that shelter in tree hollows. When currawongs and ravens are hand-fed they breed up and prey on smaller birds, causing an imbalance in bird populations.

Samaritan’s purse is providing safe drinking water for families and communities in the world’s poorest nations, by providing wells, rainwater tanks and bio-sand filters. They also provide training in health and hygiene practices.

You can donate to this work by enclosing your gift in an envelope marked “Turn on the tap”. (If you require a receipt for taxation purposes, please also enclose your name and unit number). You can give your gift to your hostess, the village chaplains, or place it in the offering at the Village Church or by forwarding it to the co-ordinator Ted McGain – Unit 233, Phone 5971 6949 by 10th March 2019

Being Accepted Do you remember what is was like to begin school? Did you find it challenging? I wonder if you found it even more challenging watching on, as a parent or grandparent. On our first day at school we all long to be accepted. Recently I read an article in the Age written by radio host Wendy Harmer. She was reflecting on how she felt, as a 14 year old girl, waiting for the school bus. It was her first day back at school after her operation to correct a hare lip. The fateful morning I speak of, I was getting onto the bus, not with a new haircut, school bag, specs or a broken limb. But with something entirely more arresting. Same me, same uniform, same hair and no glasses or broken bones, but with an accessory no one on the bus had seen before, and neither had I until a few weeks earlier. I was getting onto the bus with a brand new face…. The driver nodded a welcome after my two months away from the usual pick-up spot. The timid misfits and newbies up the front saw me and sent sympathetic eyes. I kept my head down and slowly paced the steps up the aisle to the middle of the bus by the window to where I always sat. ... No one mentioned my new face but, I sensed, all my unremarkable companions – the mostly silent majority – were bristling and ready to challenge any unkind remarks from the peanut gallery up the back. The comments never came. And I have never forgotten that kindness. Harmer vividly conveys the fear of being unaccepted due to her “new face”. To be accepted by others in a new situation seems vitally important, whatever our age. Let us reach out to others who have recently arrived in the village, to welcome them, with a friendly word and perhaps a small act of kindness. May we let them know they are accepted in this new place. The Bible says - “Accept one another then just as Christ accepted you.” (Romans 15:7). Liz Taylor (Chaplain)
