Chapter of VTCI Publication of the LONG ISLAND THUNDERBIRD CLUB Silver Award 2019
FEBRUARY 2020
CURTIS HESS 1962 THUNDERBIRD My car is a (basic) Third Generation Thunderbird Hardtop “Bullet Bird”. The Corinthian White red interior 2 door coup was originally owned by
Edna Reilly of Troy Avenue in Brooklyn New York and was purchased at Pace Motor Sales Inc. on 4825 Kings Highway, in Brooklyn NY as
well. Delivery to Ms. Reilly took place on October 15, 1962, and the original NY license plate was BA7-1090. The sales owner’s signature was
63A-M-55-08H-(13)-1-4. Although technically I’m the third owner as of June 9, 2002, the second owner who I purchased the T-bird from lived in
Neponsit NY at the Rockaways, and owned the T-Bird for less than six Months. My original intentions was only to go and see this bird while my
wife was visiting a family member, but upon inspection realized that for sale was an untouched original thunderbird with only 59897 miles on the
odometer. Further inspection revealed ROT sheets under the original red interior’s driver seat and a ROT sheet folded up and stuffed between the
rear brake line and the right rear axle. Many other stamp marking were discovered including under the rear trunk lid, and inside the right door
after removing the door panel. The 6.4L390CID300hpV8engine is all original as well as the Autolite 4100 carburetor (with tag) and the 1962
Cruise-O-Matic transmission. Fortunately the car has always been garaged to this day, and still has the original paint even though many areas are
beginning to pit and craze. Since 2002 all the original interior seat cushioning front and rear, and carpeting have been replaced due to age and no
UV protection, along with the entire original (riveted) front and rear suspension (replaced by myself), and the entire rear bumper suspension wir-
ing harness upgraded due to erosion from the rear exhaust eating away at the wire jacket insulation. Many other mechanical and electrical repairs
have been done by myself through the years and have enjoyed the “therapy” seeing the car come back to life.

We have a Show Date – Sunday, July 12th
Starting with this issue of Bird Talk the registration form for our July 12th show will be appearing in our newsletter on page #9 until game time.
Remember, it’s never too early to pre- register and please send your gelt/pesos to Dennis Benfante. Also, Alias Smith and Jones are heading to
Ford Nationals again in June. This year, as it was last year, Art Fleming will be riding shot gun and looking forward to see the guys from Lehigh
Valley. Art will also accompany me to the North Jersey Thunderbird show in June. As you can see, I’m gearing up for the upcoming show sea-
son. So by doing this I’m not so depressed because it’s cold outside. This year Thunderbird Appreciation Day is Sunday May 17 th, with both clubs
holding hands in Kings Park for a pizza Sunday?
February Club Meeting
February 28th Meeting Reminder: This will be the first year in the last few decades that there is no consistency in our meeting days and dates.
So for February we will be meeting at the Hauppauge Palace Diner. Game time is 7 PM.
Pizza Night
Next Month‘s Club Meeting: Wednesday, March 18th @: Our March meeting for years has been detailing session along with pizza. That’s
the good news. Now, the not so good news, I’m still trying to lock in a venue for the night. I have reached out to Gino’s in Kings Park where we
have our show. So stay tuned.
Page #6: All dates have been updated based on the information from the President’s Council meeting on Sunday February 16 th.
Page #9
Page #9: Moving forward and until its show time page #9 will have the show flyer. Remember: we only guarantee your size and goodie bag if you
pre- register.
Thunderbird Display in Allentown Pa/America on wheels Museum: In the current issue of Hemmings Classic Car Magazine there is a mu-
seum in Allentown Pa that will display our beloved Thunderbirds. Pat Scomello of TONY is trying to put together a trip to the event and wants us
to get involved. It’s in the early stages but we will keep everyone informed via e -mails to keep you updated. The display will run thru April 2020.
Breakfast with the Boss
Breakfast with the Boss/ Sunday, March 8th: We will be meeting at the South Bay Diner in Lindenhurst at 9 AM, and enjoy a few war stories,
and if Mother Nature is kind to us, bring your Bird. In case you forgot the diner is located on the south side of Sunrise Highway in Lindenhurst
about ¼ mile east of Wellwood Ave.
Vintage Thunderbird Club International
VTCI/John Bianco: I received my VTCI newsletter on Thursday February 13th and like every newsletter it always lists the new members from
coast to coast. In this edition one of our own has joined up. John Bianco from Floral Park. We are an important piece of this National Thunderbird
Club and we need to support them by joining up. The application is in the extra pages of this newsletter. The articles and tech. info. is outstanding,
and in this current issue there is an article about Lee Iacocca and what he has accomplished in his tenure with Ford and Chrysler.
Club Sweatshirts & Hats: Just a reminder that sweatshirts and hats that were ordered and are available for pickup. Also, have one XL sweatshirt
this is available for purchase. If you’re coming to the February meeting reach out to me and I will bring your merchandise to the meeting.
North Jersey Thunderbird Club Show/Saturday June 13, 2020: It’s a little early to think about June but this is one of my favorite shows plus I
belong to the club. More info. as we get closer. The flyer is in the extra pages of our newsletter.

President Message Continued from Page 3
2020 Outdoor Meeting Listing
April 15th - Tuesday: Burger King in Farmingdale. BK is located at the intersection of Route 110, and Main Street. …Good location, with
ample parking. If you take the SSP, get off at Route 110 North (Exit 32). Make a left at the first light, and make an immediate right into the BK
driveway.
May 17th – Sunday: Thunderbird Appreciation Day / Key Food Shopping Center in Kings Park. As we get closer we will have more details
about the day. If you remember, last year it was a great turnout for both clubs.
June 18th - Thursday Cruise Night - Kings Park Plaza in Kings Park: KPP is located on Indian Head Road in Kings Park - just south of the
Kings Park RR station. From the Sunken Meadow Parkway, stay north until you come to the Indian Head Road exit. Exit the Parkway and head
north on IHR for a couple of miles until you see the Key Food shopping center on your left.
July Meeting: There will not be a club meeting in July because of our annual Thunderbird Show.
August Meeting Saturday Date TBD –
Sunday, February 16, 2020 - President‘s Council Meeting @ Levittown Town Hall: With me today was our EIC, Mr. Fleming, and from
TONY their VP Mr. Benfante. Some interesting speakers were Steve Linden who talked about bad restorations, and your money. Next, David
Fluhrer from Newsday looking for cars for his column. He states he has inventory of cars thru May. So if you’re interested in being in Newsday
go to [email protected]. There is a new Hagerty Rep. His name is Even Watson and he told the crowd that Long Island is the seventh
largest Hagerty customer’s base in the USA. A young guy with great speaker presence, and we have already approached him for some promotion
stuff for our show. Two gentlemen who support our hobby and have their own web sites are David Visaggi from www.rubberhitsthe road.com,
and Pete Giardano from liclassiccars.com. Both have show listings and free classified ads. All updated event info is on page #6. Also what has
come out of this meeting is that the Sayville Chamber of Commerce wants to charge $35.00 per car for this year’s event on August 8th. However,
that was shot down by the club that runs the event. What is next is they now going to charge you for parking on the street during the street fair.
Holy hang on to your wallet Batman, and Dennis drove and I got to rest……………
1968 Mustang Bullitt: In case you did not see it or read about it. The famous Mustang from the movie Bullitt was just sold for 3.7 million and
that figure included all the fees. I’m sure you know that there were two Mustangs being used in the movie. Vin #558 and #559. #558 was found
in a junk yard in Mexico and subsequently restored and #559 was the one that was just sold. To date, and I’m sure there will be more, but two
magazines Hemmings Muscle Machine and Old Cars Weekly have current articles about the owners etc. For your info. I have broken down the
second car Vin with #559.
8R02S12559: The first character 8, indicates 1968 model year. The letter R means the car was produced in San Jose California. The “02” in the
third and fourth places means the two door fastback coupe body style (“01” would be a “notch- back” coupe and “03” would be a convertible).
The S that comes fifth means the car was originally equipped with GT V-8, an FE series engine with 10.5:1 compression, a Holley four-barrel,
and factory horsepower rating of 325 at 4,800 rpm. The rest of the number, 125559, means it was roughly (accounting for component shortages
and non-sequential builds) the 25,559th car off the line at San Jose.
2020 Club Dues: It’s simple - if you have not paid your 2020 club dues for this year, this could be your last newsletter. No reminders, begging
etc.
…Buckle Up… be warm and safe… and ‗you‘re welcome‘.

1988 THUNDERBIRD TUBRO COUPE
For Sale: 1962 Ford Thunderbird Coupe (Bullet Bird) Raven Black (in Primer)
It time to sell the “ForeverCar” for I’ve been forever working on it since 1991, and refuses to remain anymore as a parts
car. My T-Bird has had a hard life but refuses to die and go to the great car in the sky. But it’s now time to part ways. I
want my garage space back.
The ’62 Thunderbird has a 1970 Y block, NOS ’64 intake manifold, excellent working 4100 carburetor, electric windows,
electric driver’s seat, brand new Front tinted Windshield (2019), new replacement (both) exhaust manifolds, water pump,
aluminized dual 1.75 inch Dia. complete exhaust system & crossover pipe. From the ground up, completely replaced
front and rear suspension, including strut bushing. Steering box, new brake system, brake lines, brake shoes, wheel cylin-
ders all four wheels and rewire of rear bumper wire harness & much more. Too much to mention here. All heater and
electrical features, etc., in very good working order. Photo book & Excel spreadsheet available with history of repairs and
reconditioning on request.
The poor thing is down to block sanding, painting & maybe front and rear bumper chrome. You decide. All body chrome
is accounted for and has always been garaged since ownership. The T-Bird drives dead straight at any speed, (no joke.),
and will not fail any New York State inspection. Price is negotiable

GROUP LIFT PURCHASE Is anyone interested in buying a 4-post lift for their garage? I am refurbishing my garage, and have done some research on lifts. I have settled on the Backyard Buddy 7,000lb.
Standard Lift. BYB can store 2 cars in the space of one, requiring just 9' wide, 16' long, 9' ceiling height, and a 120V outlet to store one car above another car, where the lower car is
60" at its highest point or less (e.g. my 1970 Boss 302 on top of my 2013 Boss 302, for ex-ample). The lift is made in Warren, OH, has the best construction & lift locking system in my
opinion, offers jacks, drip pans, and wheels for movement, and offers the best warranty I can find. Go to their website & see for yourself www.backyardbuddy.com. It is also probably the
most expensive 4-post lift at $4,595. But I want one! I would like to assemble a group of 10 or more car guys living here on Long Island who
would like to buy this lift this summer. Then I intend to take the order to the All Ford Nation-als (June 2-4), where Backyard Buddy will have a booth. My theory is in addition to the
$300 - 400 show special, I can negotiate a volume price delivered to one "area". By negoti-ating a group purchase discount added to the reduced freight and the show special, I am go-
ing to try to knock $ 500 - 1,000 off the standard retail price of the lift.
Please realize (1) You will still have to pay someone to install the lift at your home ($500 -
1,000), (2) You will have to modify your garage door tracks to clear the lift (~$200), (3) There is no guarantee of the final price; I can only try to get the $1,000 discount I seek. But
10 units should get us some discount; 20+ units will entice the manufacture to give a sub-stantial discount. As an additional incentive, I would invite the Backyard Buddy Marketing
team to come to Long Island and talk to / interview those who participated for their advertis-ing testimonials.
Please contact me by phone or email (below) with any questions, giving me your name, your
email address, phone, and address as confirmation you are willing to spend the necessary funds in June-July. Thank you!
