In the Season of Lent each year, God’s

Church calls us to observe practices as

together we seek to reorder and reorient

ourselves towards the life of Jesus, and

the service of his Kingdom. The past few

years I have chosen to read Mark’s

gospel account of the Transfiguration

each night during Compline. While this

may not have affected the brightness of

my laundry whites, it has been a

welcome reminder of the transforming

power of God in the darkness of Lent!

Jesus’ transfiguration on the mountain is

an open invitation for us all to respond

to the grace that flows in, through and

from him. This invitation is a foretaste of

the ‘theandric mystery’ – the union of

human nature with the divine. The

transfiguration reminds us of the innate

Opening Hymn

Christ, whose glory fills the skies,

Christ the true, the only light,

sun of righteousness, arise,

triumph over shades of night;

dayspring from on high, be near;

day-star, in my heart appear.

Dark and cheerless is the morn

if you seem not close to me;

joyless is the day's return,

till your mercy's beams I see,

till they inward light impart,

glad my eyes, and warm my heart.

Visit then this soul of mine;

pierce the gloom of sin and grief;

fill me, radiancy divine;

scatter all my unbelief;

more and more yourself display,

shining to the perfect day.

Charles Wesley 1707-88 alt.

St Saviour’s Cathedral Hymns 6th August 2017

Gradual Hymn

Love of the Father, Love of God the Son,

from whom all came, in whom was all begun;

who formest heavenly beauty out of strife,

creation’s whole desire and breath of life:

Thou the all-holy, thou supreme in might,

thou dost give peace, thy presence maketh right;

thou with thy favour all things doth enfold,

with thine all-kindness free from harm wilt hold.

Hope of all comfort, splendour of all aid,

that dost not fail nor leave the heart afraid:

to all that cry thou dost all help accord,

the angels’ armour, and the saints’ reward.

Purest and highest, wisest and most just,

there is no truth save only in thy trust;

thou dost the mind from earthly dreams recall,

and bring, through Christ, to him for whom are all.

Robert Bridges 1844-1930

based on Amor Patris et Filii, 12th century CP186 Tune TIS524

Offertory Hymn

.

Light’s abode, celestial Salem,

vision whence true peace doth spring,

brighter than the heart can fancy,

mansion of the highest King;

O how glorious are the praises

which of thee the prophets sing!

There is no cloud or passing vapour

dims the brightness of the air;

endless noon-day, glorious noon-day,

from the Sun of suns is there;

there no night brings rest from labour,

for unknown are toil and care.

O how glorious and resplendent,

fragile body, thou shalt be,

when endued with so much beauty,

full of health and strong and free,

full of vigour, full of pleasure

that shalt last eternally.

Laud and honour to the Father,

laud and honour to the Son,

laud and honour to the Spirit,

ever Three and ever One,

consubstantial, co-eternal,

while unending ages run. Amen

St Saviour’s Cathedral Hymns 6th August 2017

Final Hymn

Christ is the world's true light,

its captain of salvation,

the day-star clear and bright,

desire of every nation;

new life, new hope awakes

for all who own his sway:

freedom her bondage breaks,

and night is turned to day.

In Christ all races meet,

their ancient feuds forgetting,

the whole round world complete,

from sunrise to its setting:

when Christ is throned as Lord

all shall forsake their fear,

to ploughshare beat the sword,

to pruning-hook the spear.

One Lord, in one great name

unite us all who own you;

cast out our pride and shame

that hinder to enthrone you;

the world has waited long,

has travailed long in pain;

to heal its ancient wrong,

come, Prince of Peace, and reign.

George Wallace Briggs 1875-1959 alt.

Psalm 97

1 The Lord is king; let the earth rejoice:

let the multitude of islands be glad. 2 Clouds and darkness are round about him:

righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.

3 Fire goes before him: and burns up his enemies on every side.

4 His lightnings light the world: the earth sees it and quakes.

5 The mountains melt like wax before his face: from before the face of the Lord of all the earth.

6 The heavens have proclaimed his righteousness: and all peoples have seen his glory.

7 They are ashamed, all those who serve idols and glory in mere nothings:

all gods bow down before him. 8 Zion heard and was glad,

and the daughters of Judah rejoiced: because of your judgements, O God.

9 For you, Lord, are most high over all the earth: you are exalted far above all gods.

10 The Lord loves those that hate evil: the Lord guards the life of the faithful, and delivers them from the hand of the ungodly.

11 Light dawns for the righteous: and joy for the true of heart.

12 Rejoice in the Lord, you righteous:

and give thanks to his holy name.
