Pneumatic Safety for Design Engineers
Companies are facing a huge challenge in managing the retention of their knowledge base as the skills gap between existing engineers and new recruits grows ever wider. Specifically, pneumatics knowledge in relation to the latest requirements for The Machinery Directive (DIN EN ISO 13849-1:2008) is equally challenging for both experienced and relatively new design engineers.
Festo have recognised a need for the practical application of this knowledge as it relates to BS EN ISO 4414:2010. This course provides an overview of these standards and goes on to focus on the specific safety areas around air supply, control valves and actuators and how they should best be implemented under the Machinery Directive.
Design engineers and managers who need to understand pneumatic safety.

• Overview of the standards BS EN ISO 4414:2010 – pneumatic fluid power and DIN EN ISO 13849-1:2008
• Overview of pneumatic symbols and component description• Reference to other standards on labelling and documentation plus pneumatics in safety software • E-stop and recovery• Air supply – Components and configuration of the air supply unit – Safe installation, isolation and start up – Monitoring of pressure and flow• Control valves and circuits – Types of valve and correct usage – Safe use of blocking and venting valves – Vacuum applications• Actuators – Stopping and holding a cylinder using mechanical and pneumatic methods – Behaviour of different types of actuator in safety situations – Pneumatic gripping devices and their usage
On completion of this course the participant will be able to:• Understand and apply BS EN ISO 4414:2010 and DIN EN ISO 13849-1:2008 as they relate
to pneumatic fluid power• Select the correct pneumatic equipment to design a safe and reliable machine• Understand the risks and limits of different pneumatic solutions• Understand what the importance and effect of the air supply has on the safe use of pneumatics
on a machine• Select the correct valves to achieve specific safety applications• Understand different types of actuators and clamping available to ensure safe operation of a cylinder
Practical exercises are used throughout the course.
Two day courses are available in-house or at one of our national training centres.
