Description of M/E Control System.

1. SYMBOL DESCRIPTION

The symbols consist of one or more square fields.

The number of fields corresponds to the number of valve positions.

The connecting lines are connected to the field which represents the valve position

at a given moment of the process.

The change of position is conceived to take place by the fields being displaced

at right angles to the connecting lines, which are assumed to have a stiationary

position on the paper.

A short cross line on a broken line indicates a closed path.

Example of pressure controlled 2-position valve with spring return ;

3. FUNCTIONING OF THE ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM

For plants equipped with fixed-pitch propeller, the following modes of control are available :

A. Remote control

B. Emergency control

A. Remote control

The change-over valve (100) must be in its REMOTE CONTROL position.

Stop

In this condition the STOP solenoid valve (84) is to be actuated.

Valve (84) leads a pilot signal to valve (25) and valve (117).

Valve (25) leads air to the fuel pumps to activate the puncture valves in the high pressure fuel system.

Valve (117) supplies starting air to the first part of the groove in the starting air distributor disc.

Start in ahead direction

In this condition the STOP solenoid valve (84), theAHEAD solenoid valve (86) and the START

solenoid valve (90) are to be actuated. Valve (86) leads a pilot signal to valve (10) and air to valve (55).

Valve (10) supplies air to the reversing cylinder (13) and (57) for reversing the roller guides and

the starting air distributor.

When the starting air distributor is in ahead position, valve (55) leads air to valve (90).

Valve (90) leads via valve (32) a pilot signal to valve (33).

This causes a pilot signal, if the turning is disengaged, to be led to the valves (26) and (27).

Valve (27) will open the main starting air valve and valve (26) supplies air to the starting air distributor

The engine will now rotate on starting air.

When the engine has reached the start level r/min, valve (84) and (90) are to be released.

This will at once release the valves (25) and (117).

Valve (25) will deaerate the puncture valves in the fuel pumps, thereby allowing the fuel to be injected.

Valve (117) will change the timing of the starting air distributor

one second later, delayed by valve (32), valve (90) will deaerate valve (33), causing the pilot signals

to valves (26) and (27) to be deaerated.

Valve (26) will close the air supply to he starting air distributor.

Valve (27) will close the main starting valve.

Six seconds later the solenoid valve (86) is to be released.

This will deaerate the pilot air to valve (10), whereby the reversing cylinders (13) and (57) will

be deaerated.

Speed settinq

During START the governor is to be supplied with a pre-setting signal corresponding to 45 - SOo/orpm.

This value is to be kept as long as start solenoid valve (86) is actuated.

After this the speed settings signal is set by the regulating handre.

Repeated start

In case of start failure, i.e. if the engine stops after the starting sequence has finished,

it is possible to increase the governor output at a new start attempt.

This is done by activating "CANCEL OF LIMITERS" function in governor during the starting sequenceat a repeated start.

Reversinq and start in astern direction

The procedure for reversing and start ASTERN is in principle the same as desqribed during

AHEAD direction, except after stop solenoid valve (88) is to be actuated instead of ahead solenoid

valve (86), whereby an air signal is lead to start solenoid valve (90) via interlock valve (56),

when the starting air distributor is in correct position.

Emergencv stop

The automatic emergency stop via the safety system operates by activating valve (127) in the safetyair system, independent of the control air system.

When activated, safety air is led via valve (128) to the puncture valve, stopping the high pressure

fuel supply.

Besides this, the engine can in an emergency situation be stopped manually by pulling

the emergency handle to STOP position.

In case of breakdown of the normal pneumatic manoeuvring system, the Governor or its electronics,the engine can be operated from the emergency console on the engine.Changing-over from NORMAL to EMERGENCY control is carried out by turning the impact handwheel, P, anticlockwise.

Now, the governor is disconnected from the fuel pumps, and the regufating handle on emergencyconsole is connected to them.

Furthermore, valve (100) has to be changed from NoRMAL to EMERGENCY control.Hereby the supply to the valves in the emergency control is pressurized and the supply to thesolenoid valves (84), (86) and (gg) are deaerated.

Before changing-over valve (100), it has to be checked that valve (102) is depressed and valve (105)is in the wanted position.

f n stop condition with valve (102) depressed the same components are activated as during stopfrom remote control.

In order to start the engine the emergency handle is to be moved to a suitable position and afterthis valve (101) is to be depressed.

The start sequence is the same as described under remote start, except :

1) Activating valve (33) is by-passing interlock valves (5s) and (s6).2) Delayed deaeration of the vafves (10) and (11) is caused by chock valve (104).

When the engine has reached start level r/min valve (101) is released andthe emergency handle is moved to a position corresponding to the wanted rpm.

4. ENGINE SAFETY SYSTEM

The system is separately supplied with air via valve (16), and is controlledby the safety system (with separate power supply) in the manoeuvring console (not shown in diagram).In case of shut-down, the safety system actuates valve (127).Then an air supply is led to the fuel pumps for actuating the puncture valve in the high pressurefuel system, whereby the fuel injection is stopped.

The system is connected during all modes of engine control.
