Anatomy

Location

The pleurae and lungs lie on either side of the mediastinum within the chest cavity

Each pleura has two parts:

Pleural Fluid

The pleural space normally contains 5 to 10 ml of clear fluid

It lubricates the opposing surfaces of the visceral and parietal pleurae during respiration

The formation of the fluid results from hydrostatic and osmotic pressures between the capillaries

The pleural fluid is normally absorbed into the capillaries of the visceral pleura

ANATOMY OF THE PLEURA

• BLOOD SUPPLY • Visceral pleura--- Artery supplied by bronchial and

pulmonary arterial systems. The veins drain is pulmonary vein.

• The parietal pleura--- Artery supply is from various systemic arterial supply the chest wall, diaphragm, and mediastinum.Vein is to the superior vena cava.

ANATOMY OF THE PLEURA

• NERVE SUPPLY • Parietal pleura is innervated by both somatic and

sympathetic and parasympathetic fiber via the intercostal nerve.

• The diaphragmatic pleura is supplied by phrenic nerve.

• The visceral pleura is devoid of somatic nerve.
