AI.COMM is managing a series of qualitative and quantitative research studies that have provided insights into at risk audiences in the poultry industry. Following is an overview of the research and findings. Reports and questionnaires will be posted on www.avianflu.aed.org.
Quantum Market Research Asia Pacific recently began qualitative studies to help identify the barriers thatprevent target audiences from adopting the behaviors that prevent the spread of H5N1 as well as the beliefs and values of target audiences.

formal poultry market, as well as the informal market that moves within the country and to or across regional borders. Supply chain analysis helps behavioral and epidemiologist scientists identify where an infection might be introduced into the supply chain and thus pinpoint opportunities for interventions….A second component of the research will describe and place supply chain activities within a broad socio- cultural framework,
Nielsen/Pakistan has just begin a supply chain analysis in the North West Frontier Province that tracks the actors in the poultry supply chain from “farm to fork”….This follows similar mapping exercises conducted in Bangladesh and India. The supply chain tracks the actors involved in the

The Nielsen Company Bangladesh Ltd. conducted an assessment of the effect of education and skills trainings among multiple stakeholders. The majority of the respondents (73%) cited a substantial increase in their knowledge on avian influenza, and 80% of those noted that they are now more aware than other people…..Almost all of the respondents (98%) tried to apply the knowledge of the training through one-to-one contact with poultry farmers (64%), group discussion with community leaders (54%), and
training to front line workers (50%). Recommendations for the future include arranging small group discussions with trainers at the central level and with participants at the district and the upazila level, and to include border security forces, law enforcement agencies, and other government administrative officers in future trainings.

To measure the impact of social mobilization activities, Practical Sampling International conducted face- to-face interviews in 10 urban, semi- urban and rural market locations in Ogun and OyoStates of Nigeria with 200 adult male and/or female poultry transporters, poultry/egg vendors, slaughterers/poultry processors and poultry middlemen aged 18 and above using structured questionnaires. Results
showed that radio was the most effective channel of communication (75%), followed by the street theater (28%), and then posters (18%) among those surveyed.

Building on its work in the South – Oyo and Ogun States – AI.COMM expanded its efforts with the government of Nigeria’s Public Enlightenment Committee (PEC) to two Northern states – Jos and Kaduna….A two-day workshop was held for local
government AI communication desk officers in Kaduna state to provide updates on the AI situation at the global and national levels, to strengthen participant skills in interpersonal communication and advocacy, identify gaps in the communication of AI prevention and control in the North, identify and plan activities to be carried out in the States, pretest materials (posters and jingles) to be used in the North, and gain the commitment and participation of key stakeholders….under the technical direction of Dr. Yaya Drabo and overall management of Julien Denakpo, AI regional representative, Jamil Mustapha Ango, country coordinator, and Bosede Ibirinde, administrative assistant.

endorsed our strategy to work with all parties to prevent the spread of the virus in Kaduna….The stakeholders indicated their appreciation for being involved in the initiative and the respectful and transparent manner the program is being enacted. The religious leaders were supportive and the Muslim community representative specifically requested the organization of a training for all the religious leaders in the region to strengthen their capacity in delivering messages on complex topics like Avian Influenza….Repots of the stakeholder meetings were on the national news and partners and counterparts reported hearing the stories on the new initiative.
Following the training, the 30 participants were divided into teams and visits were made to the media outlets and with the religious and traditional leaders to introduce them to the activities and ask for their support and participation in future activities. The stakeholders from the government and private sector offered their full support to our activity and

Similar activities will be repeated in the plateau state of Jos to be held 9-10 June and a consensus-building forum will be held with stakeholders, including major NGOs in Kaduna and the Plateau States is scheduled for 7 and 9 July….a media orientation session is also planned for July.
Training activities continued throughout the country and with several different audiences. To build the competency of animal health workers (AHWs), the Vietnam Veterinary Association is working with the Sub- Department of Animal Health to

The Vietnam Poultry Association (VIPA) also trained 240 farmers using participatory methodologies….to help strengthen the capability of Commune Officials’ to respond and plan for AI outbreaks, 500 commune
officials (300 in Kien Giang and 200 in Ha Nam provinces) were trained by the Vietnam Women’s Union using participatory methods….at the completion of the training the officials developed action plans for overseeing AI prevention and outbreak response in their communes. Over 100 poultry transporters, market vendors, slaughterers and cooked poultry vendors in Hung Yen province were trained on AHI prevention and bio-safety practices by the Vietnam Veterinary Association, and focused on effectively cleaning hands, wheels, knives, chopping boards and poultry containers.
Continuing social mobilization activities, seven poultry clubs for 210 Sector 3 poultry members were organized in Kien Giang province by VIPA. Most of the members have been trained on AI prevention and control.Photos courtesy of Eleanora de Guzman
Working closely with the government of Kenya’s Avian Influenza Communications Task Force, AI.COMM and its local partner, Access Leo Burnett designed and produced low-literacy print materials and two 60- second radio spots on prevention of H5N1 virus. Materials include three posters, three stickers, a single-panel brochure, and a booklet for community- level human health workers, animal health workers, agriculture

In response to the national government calling for the operationalization of provincial pandemic preparedness plans, a training session on pandemic communication in the workplace was organized by the Vientiane Capital Provincial Health Office….The workshop included guidance on how to use the H2P pandemic counseling cards that were adapted for Lao and how to best impart the information in the H2P flyers. The 15 participants who participated will in turn train the district- level trainers as part of the cascade training plan.

The district-level trainers will recruit and train 150 peer educators from 30 factories in the province….Theseworkplace peer counselors will subsequently join the surveillance team of the province so that they can efficiently and easily report suspected cases of pandemic influenza.
AI.COMM continued its cascade training in the Abbottabad District in the North West Frontier Province….Ms. Shazia Noreen, a master trainer, used her position as a community facilitator with the EU- funded Support to Livestock Services Project (SLSP) – an initiative that promotes poultry farming among women in over 200 households – to educate local women on best practices to prevent the virus and raise health poultry.
