Last month there was a terrific presentation at the Secretary of State’s Office concerning how women got the vote in Washington. This month on March 24, there will be a presentation on Washington’s March to Statehood, presented by former Supreme Court Chief Justice Gerry Alexander. I think that I might have mentioned in the last newsletter that the date was March 25. Please note the correct date. These presentations are being co-sponsored by AAUW-Olympia. In addition to the talk there is a light lunch of sandwiches, fruit, veggie tray, cookies and coffee and tea. The presentation begins at noon and ends no later than 1:30 PM. After the Chief Justice’s talk there will be time for questions and answers. Directions: once you get to the Secretary of State’s Office in the Legislative Building, tell the person behind the desk that you are there for the talk and they will escort you into the Secretary’s office. We will plan to have brochures regarding AAUW and how to become a member. Last month’s presentation by Shanna Stevenson about the fight for suffrage in Washington Territory and State was very informative. If you don’t want to pay for parking, you can park at the Farmer’s Market and take the Dash bus up to the Legislative Building. This is one of the few times that AAUW-Olympia has gotten to get our name out in public and it would be nice if as many as possible were in attendance.

Traditional Irish Dinner Served at Annual Business Meeting The Annual Business Meeting falls on St. Patrick’s Day. In keeping with the spirit, we will be having corned beef and cabbage and Irish soda bread. This is an opportunity to find out what is going on regarding programs for the rest of this year and give your input on what programs and ideas you have.

Expand Your Horizons at AAUW-WA Meeting in Bothell The AAUW-WA meeting will be held on May 2, at UW-Bothell. This is a one day meeting where you can find out what is happening in Washington State and the “other Washington” regarding all things AAUW. There will be a car going up to Bothell so you would not have to drive by yourself.

AAUW Experience Awaits In San Diego Right now, there are 35 women from Washington AAUW regis-tered to go to the San Diego AAUW Convention June 18-20. Pat, Rose, and I are going. Again this is quite an experience if you have never seen how far AAUW’s influence spreads. Lots of events go-ing on. We hope that you all take advantage of some or all of these activities. An Invitation To Take Advantage of Upcoming EventsFormer Chief Justice Gives Presentation About Washington’s March to Statehood

It certainly is a sign of the times that small organizations like ours need to ask for volunteers to head certain projects. From my experience, this has been a wonderful way to keep learning and expanding life’s opportunities. There are many of you already sharing your talents with us. We are so grateful for that. Of course, we continue to ask others to come forward. Believe me, you will learn to keep your skills sharp and really get to know the membership. It’s a rewarding journey in so many ways. In February, we asked if someone would come forward to assist Judy with the Lobby Day preparations for next year. We’re still waiting for one of you to help out with that! In addition, we have noticed that it is very important for someone to come forward to serve as Program Chair. Are you that person? Do you know the area and do you have some creative and innovative ideas for upcoming programs? We have most months covered with traditional functions. February, April, September and November, however, are the four months we need to plan for annually. You may select a committee and have fun planning some programs for us that center around themes such as diversity, history, equity or women’s health and wellbeing.

February Program Offers Interesting History Lesson Thanks to all of you who were able to attend the Schmidt House Tour on February 17. It was a beautiful day and the views from the estate spectacular__especially through some of the old-fashioned leaded-glass windows that still grace the home. Many thanks to Jeanette for making the arrangements for the tour and to Sandra for taking the RSVPs. We followed up the tour with a nice lunch at the Mason Jar Restaurant, not far from the Schmidt Estate, where we enjoyed some lively discussion and received a warm welcome. AAUW Olympia Branch Website Gets a Makeover In these techy times, it pleases me greatly to make this wonderful announcement. Cheryl emailed me, while on vacation in the Gulf Coast, that she was working on the website. She has made some major improvements. We can be very proud of that. Cheryl has created a new page on our website called member login. It is password protected and will contain our full newsletter. I will send you the password by email. In the meantime just enter aauw-wa.aauw.net and take a look at what’s there already. Check it out. You’ll be glad you did. Pat

Please Note Extra Opportunites for March We’ve had many special invites this month. In addition to the one on the left side of this page, Joyce, who is a member of the SE King County AAUW and served under Jo H. as State Membership Chair many years ago, invited us to view the art installation Brokenness to go along with an event on Human Trafficking. Joyce’s granddaughter, Lauren D., is a Senior Art Major at Evergreen State College.
