Another year has flown by and I can't believe the challenges our operation has faced. A very tough harvest again in our area for the fourth year in a row. We are very thankful we have a cowherd but we are also aware how much time and effort they require. Can't imagine doing this farming without the cows though.

Our offering has a lot of polled Fleckvieh bulls this year in both the 2 year olds and yearlings. Half our Fleckvieh cowherd have polled heads. We have been diligently using polled bulls over the last ten years or so while working hard to keep the performance that the Fleck cattle are noted for.

Our Angus division has had to move on from using Red Clay Colt 22X for the last eight years. The performance we got from his progeny will be hard to match, but we are very satisfied with Red Lwnbrg Flex and Red Mar Mac Top Secret. Their calves stand out in the group.

We raise our bulls on a high fiber, high roughage, high protein diet to maximize muscle development and growth, as well as maintain a healthy rumen. Our pens are large so you can walk the pens and see their feet.

Welcome to the annual Lone Stone Farms Simmental and Red Angus bull sale. It is hosted on the farm in one of the most family friendly sale barns in Western Canada. Attend the sale and experience one of the finest homemade meals of the sale season.

As I sit down with my morning coffee and the temperature hits -40 plus a wind, I think about how much work goes into raising bulls. I’m not sure if our average commercial cattleman appreciates how complex and stressful this business is. Catalogue deadlines, and calving along with picturing bulls at these temperatures! Not to mention the shear stress of semen testing when Mother Nature rears her ugly head. All these projects with tight deadlines happen in the heart of winter and calving season. We can all tip our hats to the families in the purebred cattle industry that get this accomplished!

This year's offering at Lone Stone will again have a strong set of Virgin two year olds. These bulls are NOT fed in a feedlot pen all summer, they are backgrounded the first winter then turned out on grass for the summer months. Grown out naturally, it’s a hard thing to find in today’s market! These bulls are bred and raised to excel in the commercial cattle industry. Each segment of this program will have some features and the polled influence is very strong. There will be a solid group of calving ease bulls and high performance herdsire prospects in both breeds!

Anyway, this is a big bull. Looks exactly like Envoy. Has his coat coloring and his big dinner plate foot. For a single polled bull Envoy had the power of a horned bull. This really is the last of the Envoys!

Parent Verified. Last year Flex got hurt early in the breeding season so we did not have more than 6 calves out of him. Breeding 2019 saw him with 55 head. Tribute to our Fathers

My father grew up on the Canadian Shield in Northern Ontario. There was definitely more rock and water than there was soil. He said he wanted a farm with no rocks, so he came west permanently in 1951 and bought his land in 1962 out by Linaria in Westlock County. As kids we picked roots most summers as we cleared away a few acres of bush every year. In the 56 years Dad farmed his 3 quarters of land you could fit all the rocks into the back of a pickup truck.

Dad liked to keep life simple; work hard, don't spend money you don't have, and take time to hunt, fish and travel.

My greatest admiration of my father was his simplistic view of raising children. You only have to teach them two things for them to be successful in life. He would say “Teach them to work hard and teach them respect. First they must respect themselves and then respect every person they come in contact with.” I must say life is pretty good when you you follow these two principles.

As long as I lived under my parents' roof it was my Dad's way or no way. But the day I left home he totally released all control. So much so that if I asked his advice his reply was “I taught you how to work and make decisions. It's now up to you and you will have to live with whatever those decisions bring.”

Evan was born in Edmonton on August 4, 1934. His parents, Welsh and Danish immigrants, brought him back to their farm north of Westlock where he thrived and his great love for farming was nurtured.

He attended Vermilion School of Agriculture after graduating Westlock High School. In 1957 Evan married a local girl, Betty Rose Lyons. That same year they purchased the home farm where Lonnie and Karen live and farm today. Evan and Betty Rose raised four farm kids, Dan, Karen, Joyce and Jim.

Evan was a 4-H leader in the local beef club, a deacon in his church and a director of a local summer kids camp. Evan raised purebred cattle all his farming career. He started with Polled Herefords and added Fleckvieh Simmental, Black and Red Angus and even dabbled in Speckle Park in the last ten years. But in the end, it was always the Herefords that were his passion. On his death on June 7, 2019 there were still 12 Polled Hereford females and a bull out grazing in the pasture. A cattleman right to the end.
