If you walk through any drug store,

grocery store or department store this

month, you’ll see large displays of

scary costumes and decorations for Halloween. Seeing this

made we wonder “What scares a Supply Chain Professional”

during October leading up to Halloween?

October seems to be the month for discussing potential

Supply Chain failures and how to prepare to prevent them

or to deal with them. At our October, 2011 Central Indiana

Chapter Professional Development Meeting (PDM), we

held a panel discussion on Supply Chain Risk Management

featuring Gary Bear-Caterpillar, Inc., Eric Krepps- CMW

Manufacturing, Ruth Ann Mechling-Dow AgroSciences and F.

Robert Jacobs-Indiana University. At our October, 2012 PDM,

Mark Seitz-Eli Lilly and Company, discussed Supply Chain

Risk and Security for pharmaceutical products. And just last

Friday Abe Eshkenazi-CEO APICS , discussed food Supply

Chain Risk and Security dealing with the chain of custody of

honey. Seems people were conspiring to falsify documents to

illegally move Chinese honey into the US market where it is

used by food manufacturers and consumers alike.

These days, supply chain management professionals have

to be experts in pre-risk prevention and post-risk response

agility. Risk experts will tell us that along with mitigating the

risk of events occurring to our supply chains we need to be

just a good responding to an event when it does occur. No

one can predict all the scenarios of a risk event so response

agility—maybe in the form of your Business Continuity Plan

(BCP)-- is critical in keeping your company operational when

an event does occur.

In addition to risk content that is included in APICS Certified

Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) and APICS

Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP) programs, APICS

now offer the APICS Risk Management certificate. This is

a comprehensive, forward-looking program that prepares

professionals to participate in the development of global risk

mitigation strategy. By earning this certificate, you demonstrate

your commitment to protecting your employer from supply

chain risk --and balancing anticipated rewards and risks in the

decision-making process.

So as little ghosts and goblins come to your door at the end

of this month, think about what scares you about your supply

chain—and what you are going to do about it!
