Oswego Pioneer Cemetery Project

This year’s annual meeting presentation will focus on the ongoing Oswego Pioneer Cemetery Pro-

ject. Richard Santee and Steve Dietz, OHC board members, will provide a summary of OHC efforts under-taken thus far to inventory and document the cemetery which is located on Stafford Road in Lake Oswego .

Formerly known as the " Odd Fellows Cemetery ," the Oswego Pioneer Cemetery comprises 5.14 acres, and is located within Jesse Bullock’s 1850 Donation Land Claim. The cemetery was originally laid out in nine sections in 1881 by Bullock's son-in-law, George W. Prosser, who gave the property to the Oregon Iron & Steel Company in 1892 for use by the community. By 1934 it had been donated to the Methodist Church , and the Oswego Odd Fellows Lodge (IOOF #93) managed the cemetery from 1938 to 1977 after receiving it from the Methodist Church . The Oswego Pioneer Cemetery Association has owned and man-aged the site since 1977.

The earliest known grave in the cemetery is that of Florine Augusta Woodruff Davidson, who died November 29, 1880. Cemetery founders Bullock and Prosser are also buried there along with members of over a dozen other Hazelia and Oswego pioneer families. Other notables include six mayors of Lake Oswego , three builders of the Oswego iron smelter, and numerous other early settlers and community leaders. 9:30am Light Brunch 10:30 Meeting

Steve Dietz Richard Santee

On Saturday Morning, FEBRUARY 21, at 9:30, we begin our Annual Meeting with coffee and refreshments. From 10:30 – noon is our Business meeting, with election of officers and Board of Direction, and our an-nual update. This years Annual Meeting program, the OSWEGO PIONEER CEMETERY PROJECT, is especially exciting for us to share with you. Richard Santee and Steve Dietz, who both serve on our Board, have been very involved in researching the history of our Oswego Pioneer Cemetery. Their enthusiasm for this rich piece of Lake Oswego’s heritage, has been overwhelming in terms of their find-ings and the necessity, they feel, for us to support this facet of our community’s identity. When Richard and Steve came to the Board to seek the Heritage Council support of our Pioneer Cemetery, we became not only en-thusiastic, but encouraged them to continue their research efforts. We now want to share with you their process and early discover-ies. We hope you will find their presentation as fascinating as we did. Richard is OHC’s 1st Vice President. He was formerly on the faculty at University of California at Berkley teaching Sociology. Richard was born in Portland and moved back to Lake Oswego 5 years ago, and soon thereafter was elected to our Board. Steve is OHC’s 2nd Vice President and currently a 5th grade teacher in Vancouver, Washington. He is also a semi- retired Archae-ologist and used these skills to pursue the history of the Oswego Pioneer Cemetery. On a different note, we want to thank you for joining us at our 1st Member Appreciation and Holiday Art Show, which was held the weekend after Thanksgiving. Many of the artists who showed their work, are also members of OHC. Their combined efforts to pre-sent an exciting show while also respecting the feeling of tradition that encompasses the architecture of our Heritage House was evi-dent from the moment you walked into the decorated entrance. The House felt alive and very festive. Jude Graham, our new director, and the artists joined together to decorate all rooms, and Bill Warner, Henry Germond, and George Benson, installed new lights around the perimeter of our House to brighten the seasons, now and in future years. Each of our Board members has contributed to the success of our Oswego Heritage Councils many activities and events again this year, and thus, our membership continues to grow. Thank you for your support. We look forward to seeing you again on February 21, at the Annual Meeting.
