When Family Counseling Service was formed during the Great Depression, the agen-cy’s primary purpose was to provide needy families with relief in the form of food, coal, clothing, and enough money to meet their basic needs. At FCS today, as in the beginning, every service we provide and every effort we support is guided by one simple question:

Does this initiative provide relief and meet the needs of those struggling in our community?

We are constantly assessing and evaluating the diverse communities we serve in order to find the answer to this question.

The purpose of this report is to show our stakeholders how our community-based ini-tiatives are making an impact. And while the statistics are important, the most important aspect is how we equip and empower individuals with the resources, knowledge, and training to make a meaningful and lasting impact.

The meaningful impact we had on the community in this past year would not have been possible without the generous contributions of donors as well as the dedication of others who care deeply about FCS. Our Board of Directors is extremely devoted and giving of their time and talent. Great credit also goes to our Executive Director, Eric Ward, his leadership team, all staff members, and our interns. In addition, on behalf of the Board of Directors and the staff of FCS, I would like to express my deepest apprecia-tion for the time, talents, and commitment given by everyone who has volunteered at the agency during the past year. We are profoundly grateful for all you have done to serve those in need in our community.

Eighty three years ago Family Counseling Service was developed because of concern for needy families in our community. During the past year that same concern has lead the agency in struggles and seccesses. I look forward to the coming year with optimism. I know that together we will continue to use our agency’s resources to provide relief and support where they can havve the greatest impact.

Meet our Class of 2013 Interns

This is the 30th year of Family Counseling Service’s Masters Level Internship Program. We are proud to say that 12 of our cur-rent therapists started out in the internship program at FCS. And by the way that includes our current Executive Director, Clinical

Director and Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters.

In addition to training therapists at the beginning stages of their careers, we are committed to the lifelong learning of our

colleagues. Our Continuing Education Network is an approved CEU provider of seminars for Illinois Social Workers; Illinois

Professional Counselors; Illinois Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists and Illinois Teachers. This past year we provided

seminars to 354 area therapists totaling 1,470 hours of instruction, an increase of 118% over last year.

last year through Foreclosure Prevention and The Hardest Hit Fund.

In addition, over 220 families learned how to stabilize their financial situations and chart a course for a
