GEOGRAPHY Read and answer questions below: Ethiopia

Ethiopia is in East Africa. Ethiopia is landlocked, which means that it has land on all sides and that no part of it touches the sea. Half of the people who live in Ethiopia are younger than eighteen years old.

Ethiopian flag The Ethiopian flag is green, yellow and red with a yellow star on a blue background in the centre. The star is the emblem of Ethiopia; it represents a bright future.

Ethiopian Wolf The Bale mountains are the best place to see the Ethiopian wolf. This wolf is endangered (there are very few left). Only about 500 adult wolves remain in the wild. The Ethiopian wolf has long legs and a narrow pointed muzzle. Its coat is rusty red in colour. It mostly eats rodents, small birds and hares. Male wolves do not leave their parents’ pack, whereas females will leave at the age of two to join another pack. Lucy the fossil skeleton Fossils are often found in rocks. They show us the shape or mould of an animal that died a long time ago. A fossil skeleton called Lucy was found in Ethiopia in 1974. It taught us a lot about the first humans. Her skeleton showed that, unlike chimpanzees, she walked upright. Write True or False

1. There is a star on the Ethiopian flag. ______ 2. Ethiopia is an island. ________ 3. Many Ethiopians are under 18._______ 4. There are lots of Ethiopian wolves._______ 5. A fossil skeleton of a wolf was found in 1974. _____

Read about the life of an Ethiopian girl. My name in Muna. I am eight years old and I live in the countryside in Ethiopia. I live with my parents and my three sisters and three brothers. We live in a small two-room hut called a tukul. It is thatched and made from mud and wood. I wake up at 6.30 a.m. We eat enkulal tibs for breakfast. This is like scrambled eggs with a mixture of green and red peppers, tomatoes and onions. I start school at 7.30 a.m. Before class, we gather in the playground to exercise, sing the national anthem and pray. School ends at 3.00 p.m. When I get home, I help my mother by

sweeping the house and fetching water. We carry the water on our heads or backs. For dinner, my family eat the injera and stew that I cook with my sister. Injera is bread that looks like a pancake. It is made from teff (a type of wheat). We often have coffee after dinner, even the children!

SCIENCE How many bones are in my body? An adult has 206 bones, but a baby has more than 300 soft bones. Many of them fuse (join) together as we grow. The bones inside our body are joined together to make our skeleton. Some bones are tiny, like the bones in our ear. Some are very large, like the bones in our legs. Bones are very light, yet they are as strong as steel. Fish, milk and cheese help your bones grow strong. The skeleton has three main jobs:

It supports our body and helps us to stand. Without our skeleton we would be a large blob.

It helps us move.

It protects important organs in our body like the brain, lungs and heart. Watch this video clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUP-D4dKp14

Answer the questions 1. Who has more bones, a baby or an adult? 2. What is the name of the main bone in your head? 3. What are the bones in your chest called? 4. Can you name a bone in your arm? 5. Can you name a bone in your leg? 6. What bone do you use when you are chewing? 7. Which bone do you think is the longest? 8. What do you think would happen if we didn’t have any bones? 9. How can you look after your bones? 10. Have you ever broken a bone?

When using the euro sign it must come first e.g. €1.43 not 1.43€ When using the cent sign it must come last e.g. 141c not c143 Important: You cannot use the euro and the cent sign together. You must use one or the other. (You cannot write €1.39c you must write either 139c or €1.39) Question A: How many €1 and 1c coins would you get for the following amounts of money? You need to convert the cents to euro. Example: 149c = €1.49 71c = €0.71 102c = €1.02 4c = €0.04 Question B: You need to convert the euro and cents to just cents. HISTORY Read and answer questions below: Oisín Goes to Tír na nÓg

Once upon a time, there lived a group of warriors called Na Fianna. Their leader was Fionn Mac Cumhaill. They spent their days hunting wild deer, telling stories around open fires and protecting the High King. One morning, Fionn and his son Oisín were hunting in the woods.

Suddenly Fionn and Oisín spotted a figure out at sea. As it came closer, Oisín saw that it was a beautiful young woman riding a snow-white horse. She was the most beautiful woman Oisín had ever seen. Oisín was in love. She spoke to him softly. “My name is Niamh. I am a princess and my father is the king in the land of Tír na nÓg. It is a magical land, far away, where sadness never comes, and no one ever grows old. I want you, Oisín, to come back there with me.”Oisín was sad to leave his father, Fionn the Fianna and Ireland, but he got up on Niamh’s horse to go with her to the land of Tír na nÓg. He promised his father that he would return to Ireland soon. Oisín and Niamh spent many happy times together in Tír na nÓg, but a part of Oisín always missed Ireland. He missed his father and the Fianna. He thought about them often.

Oisín asked many times if he could return to Ireland to see his father. Finally, Niamh agreed. She gave him her white horse, but she warned him. “Do not let your feet touch Irish soil. If you do, you will never return to Tír na nÓg.”Oisín headed back across the sea, towards Ireland, on Niamh’s white horse. When he landed, he noticed that things had changed. He hadn’t realised it, but he had been away from Ireland for 300 years! Oisín’s father and all the Fianna had died years earlier. He was heartbroken. Oisín turned to ride back to Niamh in Tír na nÓg. As he rode, he saw some men struggling to lift a large rock. He bent over to help them, but he fell off his horse. The moment his feet touched the ground he aged 300 years. He became old and frail. The white horse quickly galloped away, back to Tír na nÓg. The men in the village looked after Oisín until he died. He told them many stories about Fionn Mac Cumhaill and the Fianna.

Questions: 1. What was Fionn Mac Cumhail’s son called? 2. Who was Niamh? 3. What does Tír na nÓg mean? 4. What was different about Tír na nÓg? 5. How long was Oisín away from Ireland? 6. Why do you think Oisín came back to Ireland? 7. What warning did Niamh give him? 8. What happened to Oisín when his feet touched the ground? 9. Do you think this is a true story?
