Dear Parents / Caregivers,
Tēnā koutou, kia ora koutou katoa.
The half-way point of the second term is here, and with a lovely long weekend to look forward to,
it’s a great opportunity to catch a quick breath and look ahead to the next five weeks of learning.
Last Friday’s Cross-Country and Junior Huff n Puff was a great afternoon of competition,
challenge, and adventure for the students. From running through the creek, to leaping fences,
circumnavigating the forest and finishing under the flags at the end, it was a great opportunity for
the students to test themselves, experience struggle and the satisfaction of a job well done. A big
thank you to Mr Pullar and Mr Carlaw for all their work in putting together this exciting annual
school event, to all those who helped on the day, and to the many parents who were able to join
us to support the children. Great work.
Our Home & School continue to plan a number of exciting events and initiatives to support our
tamariki. This term there is work underway selling the Entertainment Book and Beanies, and
preparation has started for next term’s School Fair, and an end-of-year Disco. Please continue to
support, this group in the good work they are doing to connect ‘home’ and ‘school’ and raise
important funds for our school.
On Tuesday , it was great to be part of the Year 8 group—along with Mrs Gibb and Mr Carlaw, in
Christchurch at the National Young Leaders Day. The students heard from a series of inspirational
speakers about the potential that all of us have to make a difference in our world. The theme for
the day was a whakatuaki (proverb): E kore au e ngaro he kakano i ruia mai i rangiatea – I will never
be lost, for I am a seed born of greatness. From this saying, each speaker told parts of their life
stories and encouraged the students to believe in themselves, and be the best that they can be. A
really great day of learning, with a healthy dose of laughter along the way.
There is lots to look forward to in the next five weeks—Science studies, inter-school events, Jump
Jam, Book Week and mid-year Parent Teacher meetings to name a few. Enjoy the long weekend!

Sports News
The 2017 Cross Country was another successful event this year. The weather was fantastic and
it was great to see the kids competing and supporting each other. A big thank you to all the
parents for coming along to support this event. Look out for more news about the SC Cross
Country on June 14 in the coming weeks. Certificates for the winners and place-getters for the
Cross Country will be presented at Assembly next week. Join us if you can!
The Pleasant Point Rippa Rugby team is heading off to Ashburton on the 15th of
June to try and get their hands on the Hanan Cup. They will also play at half
time in the game between the Highlanders and Crusaders on the 6th of July in
Timaru. We wish them all the best and thank the coaches Mick Geary and
Brendon Cairns for the hard work they have put into preparing the team.
We have been lucky enough to have Hayden from Tyre General, Temuka
come and drop off 50 balls (25 soccer and 25 rugby) for us to use at the
school, they were kindly sponsored by BKT. Thanks!
Kiwisport & Fundamentals
The first term of Friday Sport saw both
schools Year 5—8’s playing winter sports
such as Netball, Hockey and Rugby. It is great to see children try different sports and gain a wide
range of skills, especially great to see the boys giving Netball a go, they were actually enjoying
themselves. These skills will encourage them to give Indoor Netball a go which is a super-fast and
fun game. Thanks to Fergus Ibister on starting the trend!
The 2nd term gave the schools a second rotation of these sports but instead of Hockey they now
have Football. The weather hasn’t been very kind seeing a couple of sessions cancelled—its
winter!!
The Year 2—4’s have been learning Hockey skills and invasion games for fundamentals on
Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at both Point Schools. Invasion games teaches these
children the basic fundamentals of the winter games the seniors are learning.
It’s great to see awesome sport skills coming through these sessions, both girls and boys give the
games and sports their best.
Looking forward to the next part of the term, hopefully the weather is kinder.

Did you know: What do these boxes mean?
The Blue Box is our Lunch Orders and Notices box. Students (and parents) will
find this outside the Office every morning. Any notices that get sent home can be
left in here—on the Notices side, when returned. On the other side is the Lunch
Orders slot, where students are able to put lunch orders Tuesday - Friday.
These are our PB4L House boxes and are found outside the Office door
(Student Entrance) on the wall. The boxes are in our four House colours and are
used by the children to post their Green Cards (positive behaviour recognition)
when spotted by the teachers doing fantastic things out in the playground. These
PB4L cards go towards House points and the annual inter-House competition.

School Uniforms
With the frosty starts to the days, students need to be wearing more clothes. Please ensure that it is school uni-
form such as the school jersey, polar fleece or sweatshirt. Navy blue thermals can be worn underneath the polo
shirts. Non-uniform jackets may be worn to and from school.
Lost Property
In the office we have lots of lunch boxes and clothing that have lost their rightful owners. All named items have been returned
to classes, however we would love for the remaining un-named clothing and lunch boxes to find their way back to their proper
homes. Please come and have a look. First in, best dressed!
Student Council
The Student Council have been busy planning some fun activities for this term including a Hot Chocolate morning, a ’bring it on’
Staff v Student Baseball game and a fun dress up day to name just a few things. Our Year 8’s travelled to Christchurch on
Tuesday for the National Young Leaders Day. It was a great learning experience and there were some amazing speakers. Aaron
Jackson, Matt Brown and Daniel Flynn talked to us about what inspired them in their lives to do the great things that they did. A
big thank you to Mrs Gibb for organising this trip. It was awesome to have the day out with you, Mr Carlaw and Mr Creba.
Hot Lunches
In Term 2 & 3, students in Years 5–8 are given the privilege if parents wish, of bringing food to be heated
(microwave or sandwich press). No instant noodles are to be brought to school to be cooked here, how-
ever you can put hot noodles (minus the boiling water) in a flask for your children to bring to school. Year
5-8 students are not allowed to be heat up food for younger siblings. A Teacher Aide supervises and helps
aid the heating of the food.
Thanks for your help with this.

Choco Energy Balls—Yum!
If you're looking for a fun way to connect with your child why not try doing some baking together. We can highly recommend
this nourishing recipe, which also makes for an easy clean up! Baking together provides a wonderful way of incorporating maths,
oral and written language with your child. Plus it tastes great!
1 cup desiccated coconut
4 tablespoons nut butter e.g. hazelnut, almond, cashew (we used Nutella!)
2 tablespoons cacao powder or good quality dark cocoa powder
4 pitted medjool dates or 6-7 normal dried dates soaked in boiling water for 5
minutes
½ cup of rolled oats
Pinch of salt
2 teaspoons tahini – sesame paste
1 ½ tablespoons maple syrup
Place all ingredients in a food processor and blitz until well combined and the mixture holds together well when pressed
between your fingers. If the mixture is too dry add a bit more nut butter, if it is too wet add more rolled oats. Roll a tablespoon
sized ball in coconut. Store in cupboard for 1 week or 2 weeks in the fridge.
If you have older children then let them make these by themselves. You may be surprised by what they can produce. Who
knows you might have the next Master Chef in the making! Have fun and let your child be creative and see what they want to
roll the balls in! Enjoy a yummy treat and pop one in their lunch boxes. Bon Appetite!
