4. The Viral Matrix concept says something like this:
The greatest results in any promotional effort or company's or organization's acceptance come from a synergy of multiple touches using multiple methods, not any one item. The product or idea or group builds a viral environment where an indefinable point or group of points goes viral and begins to produce results. In a marketing thrust mass, social, direct, mobile, and online components all represent layers of touch.
Infotrends recently reports from research that using 2.7 touches across the layers gets best results with some seeing 30% uplifts from prior results. The matrix constantly is developing new extensions and has to be tended and measured for any healthy organization. Social networks in the Social layer like Facebook, Twitter, and Linkedin can't ignore Hi5, Orkut or Nexopiea - even if you think you are only going USA. A Canadian or a Brazilian could be the link to a next door neighbor needing your services. You can't stop at Social Network - maybe your virus needs Social News in the layer like Digg. Direct layer can't be limited to mail or email or phone or text (which is also in the Mobile layer). It might take two or more along with Social News. The more extended and intentional the environmental layers touched, the better chances of going Viral.
