How May this book best be used?

Does this book require the help of a parent or teacher?Yes. After students get the hang of doing the exercises, parents/teachers need to check theirchildren’s work to make sure it is done properly. and that their children actually understand thevocabulary words that they covered. Students should be quizzed to see whether they can usethese vocabulary words in sentences of their own making.

Will any of the exercises be too hard for youngsters to do?

No. The exercises remain easy throughout.

Can this book be used at home as well as school?Yes.

For what grade is this workbook geared?

It may be used by first, second, third, and fourth graders—anyone who is just beginning to read. Also, it may be used in upper grades, including high school too. Students who can already readmay use it to develop their vocabulary more fully. It builds all four vocabularies as itwere—reading listening speaking, and writing.

What must be done to activate the text-to-speech function?

Unlike most of the other Totally Literate’s other text-to-speech documents, the free softwareof http://naturalreaders.com should be downloaded and their miniboardplaced on your computer screen. (Note: the “Read Out Loud” feature of this PDF filedoes not work adequately with this particular format.)

Can the various pages of the exercises be printed out with this PDF document?

Yes, the printing feature is enabled. Determine how many exercises you plan to cover and thenprint out the corresponding pages.

How do I start off using this book?

When beginning the first several lessons preview them with your children. Work along with yourchildren as they do the first five or ten exercises. Soon your children will be able to work ontheir own.

When should I start my children on this book?

After your children have been drilled on the "Strategic Word-Attack Charts" (i.e. PhonicsCharts), have gone over a number of Families of root-words in The Red Well-Read Reader, andhave read perhaps ten or twenty stories therein—they should then be sufficiently prepared todo these exercises herein.

How many vocabulary words are taught in this workbook?Play Onwards, Volumes 1 and 2, covers approximately 95% of all the one-syllable (monosyllabic)word that are used in the common vernacular. The only words that are not covered extensivelyin these workbooks are jargons, i.e., those words unique to a particular trade, profession, orindustry. Along with their companion Work Onwards, they cover nearly all of the manysingle-syllable words. And of these words numerous meanings, these three workbooks covermost of the primary and secondary meanings.

How long should it take my child to finish this workbook?

It depends on four factors: one, your child's innate drive and intelligence; two, the age andmaturity of your child; three, your ability as a teacher to teach and to enkindle your child'sinquisitive spirit; and, four, the time you are able to devote to this task. Depending on thesevarious factors, you could complete all the exercises within one or two school years.

Technical Notes

1. For each letter of every blue vocabulary word there is one corresponding blank space.

2. Some vocabulary words are frequently used more than once.

3. For the plurals of some nouns and for past and progressive forms of some verbs, theappropriate ending follows the corresponding blank space in light grey, italicized font:

examples, ed, ing, and es.  And past tense of verbs are shown in the same way—e.g.

grabbed and whetted.

4. Italicized blue vocabulary words signify a pronunciation different from the other

words in its grouping.

5. The words highlighted in grey signify a homonym that should be pronounced the sameas the other words in its grouping but will sound as an aberrant pronunciation.
