Country Club living: Inspired by the Italian villa-style of Sarasota’s famous Ringling Museum, our award-winning 44,000 square foot clubhouse is nothing short of magnificent. Marble columns, graceful arches and elaborate finishes all harken back to the early 1920s when elegance reigned supreme.

Club life revolves around the informal and fine dining areas (casual or buttoned up, it’s your choice), as well as the meeting and card rooms where members and their friends regularly gather. For larger functions and special occasions, such as weddings, holidays and the occasional charity ball, there’s the grand ballroom or private wine room, the Wildwood Cellar, where members and guests can dine and dance the night away. The clubhouse is the social center of the country club lifestyle, where member service and attention to detail are unsurpassed.

The Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club pro-vides a perfect setting for wedding celebrations. The elegant 4,200-square-foot Grand Ballroom is designed with tasteful chandeliers, richly colored carpet and a balcony that overlooks the golf course, nature pre-serve, and fountain-filled lake. The luxurious bridal suite provides a place to relax before the reception, and a Romeo and Juliet balcony overlooking the grand lob-by is an ideal location to photograph those memories that last a lifetime.

The Country Club offers a variety of locations for your wedding ceremony and reception, accommodat-ing up to 240 guests. After descending an elegant wind-ing staircase, exchange vows on the lawn overlooking the golf course and nature preserve. The outside balco-ny just off the grand ballroom provides another beauti-ful setting. Make your celebration even more pictur-esque with the stunning clubhouse as a backdrop of luxury and elegance.

“We pride ourselves on the superior quality of our food and service, focusing on every detail of your event from start to finish” says Catering Sales Manager Kel-ly Hoopingarner. “So leave the catering to us and let the charm and romance of Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club create your beautiful memory! ”

Golf & Athletics: With 54 holes of private golf, 18 tennis courts, polo, cricket, and over 80 clubs to choose from, the Ranch rivals any world class resort. All 3 golf courses are kept in pristine condition and maintained as “tournament ready” championship courses. Our recently improved practice facility includes a double sided driving range, multiple putting greens, practice bunkers for both fairway and greenside bunkers, new-ly remodeled targets on the range and a new 18,000 square foot green to practice all areas of the short game.

Culinary Delights: Led by executive chef Paul Ev-ans, the culinary team at the Lakewood Ranch Golf & Country Club is second to none. Chef Paul Evans is a very active culinary competitor, with more than 50 competitions under his belt.

“We are so proud to have such a prominent chef leading our team,” says Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club General Manager Wayne Piazza. “He has won over 40 medals in various culinary competi-tions and we are fortunate to be the beneficiaries of his unique, creative and delicious creations.”

New additions: The Lakewood Ranch Golf & Country Club proudly unveiled a new signature wine room recently, designated the “Wildwood Cellar”. A large arched glass front entry etched with the silhou-ette of a vineyard leads to a beautiful space with pa-tina colored 66” hand-hammered copper top tables, imported from Chile and custom built in the United States. The room is also surrounded with authentic décor, featuring oak barrels shipped from DeLoach Vineyards in California, an antique wine press, antique cork removers, wine urns, artwork, and a 225 year old, 9 foot long cypress slab table top for wine tastings. The ceiling highlights a hand-painted mural that brings the sky into the room and gives one the feeling of being outdoors.

“At the beginning of the project, we challenged ourselves to engage all five senses in the development of the room,” said Piazza. “It would not be just a room where we could serve fine dinners and wines, but one that would involve guests in taste, smell, sight, and sound, resulting in an overwhelming feeling of what it is like to be immersed in a signature room dedicated to the enjoyment of fine wine and food.” The Wildwood Cellar is named after the various woods used in its de-velopment and is available to area businesses and the community for private parties and special events.

For golfers, a new 54,000 square foot short game practice facility has been constructed adjacent to the driving range and current putting green. This new

expansive area allows members to practice every as-pect of their short game and features an 18,000 square foot TifEagle putting green. Golfers can rehearse chal-lenges they will face throughout the 3 championship golf courses that make up Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club with the same features and conditions from a variety of lies and heights of grass. “It is a great addition to the practice area and really sets us apart from other clubs. The quality of golf is the best in the area and an amazing value” says Brian Branch, head golf professional at Lakewood Ranch. To further en-hance the member experience at Lakewood Ranch, renovations were made to the driving range to improve targets, visibility and drainage.

The Country Club Athletic Center has undergone a major renovation with new equipment and state of the art flooring being installed in the 5,000 square foot equipment area. These enhancements are in addition to the equipment added to the complex to allow for 24-hour use of the facility by the membership.

Unlike many clubs in the Sarasota/Bradenton market, the Lakewood Ranch Golf & Country Club member levels have held steady during the economic downturn. Additional information about the club can be found at lakewoodranchgolf.com or call Maureen LaTessa, Membership Director to find out about their free 2-day VIP program.

Coral Creek Club features a world class Tom Fazio designed golf course that is currently ranked in the top 30 golf courses in the State of Florida by Golf Digest. Coral Creek is the only golf course in the Boca Grande/Cape Haze area as well as in all of Charlotte, Lee and Sarasota counties ranked in the top 30. Mr. Fazio has designed Coral Creek in a core configuration with the limited residences on the perimeter of the golf course. Bordered by picturesque Coral Creek, a salt-water estuary flowing to the Gulf of Mexico and a 6,000-acre nature preserve, Coral Creek Club provides for a very special, private golf experience.

The impeccably maintained, 211-acre golf course rolls gently through southern pines, oaks and palms around deep blue lakes and picturesque, high flashing bunkers that guard emerald greens. Coral Creek Club offers water views over the mangroves on several golf holes, views that make the golf experience at Coral Creek unique among the best golf courses in Florida.

Mission Valley is a premier member owned, private country club in the Venice area of Sarasota County in SW Florida. Conveniently located between main high-ways, just minutes away from lovely gulf beaches and boating marinas, it is easy to find via our map and directions. Our club was established in 1967 and is not associated with home development. The golf course is set in a manicured, peaceful country setting with several lakes tastefully positioned to provide a scenic view with little potential as major water hazard threats. Accordingly, our challenging tree-lined, championship course was designed to be “walker friendly” without crossing roads and with the tee boxes located close to the previous green. The average round of golf is 4 hours or less. A convenient 3-tiered driving range, putting, chipping and sand practice areas are available with range balls provided. Reciprocity with over 20 private and semi-private clubs is provided from May to October. In addition to our excellent daily dining offerings, we host many weekly/monthly social, golfing and tennis events for our members. We also offer the perfect setting for luncheons, meetings and special events in our beautifully renovated Clubhouse and private banquet rooms. We believe that you will find the membership opportunities enticing, as our Club offers one of the best values of any private club in the area.

BALANCE BEING RESTORED TO LOCAL MARKET.

Some real estate “experts” will have their subscribers believe that Florida home prices are still plummeting, that purchasing Florida real estate will be at bargain basement prices. But all the factors that contribute to a recovering real estate market are present. Recent market activity statistics yield a more posi-tive view of the market, uncovering evidence that real estate in Florida, especially in Sarasota & Manatee counties, is beginning to find its’ balancing point. In many pockets of town, supply is dwindling and the absorption rate of properties for sale is increasing. These are all positive signs for buyers and sellers. While many focus on the arrival of the “Boomers”, I believe, and statistics forecast that we have and will continue to see a “great migration” to the sunshine state. The following excerpt from an industry research group (YAERD.org) speaks volumes about the past and future.

Florida’s population over the last half century has grown at a phenomenal rate due to both foreign and domestic migration. Since 1970, Florida has grown at over three times the rate of the entire nation. The population surge in the 1980s alone was higher than the total number of Florida residents in 1950. The growth rate of Florida’s foreign-born population is double that of the state’s overall increase rate, but still falls behind the rap-idly expanding population of domestic migrants.

Between 1980 and 1990, Florida had a 57% increase in its foreign-born population and the foreign-born population

increase of 70,000 people between 1990 and 1995 accounts for 30% of the state’s total population growth. Florida’s current population is approaching 18,000,000, an 11% rise just since 2000 and shows no signs of slowing down. In fact, a 1995 study predicted that by 2015 Florida would surpass New York as the third most populated state in the nation, whereas a current study accelerates this prediction to possibly occur sooner, in-dicating that Florida is growing much faster than experts could have predicted.

With over 70,000 immigrants entering Florida legally each year the international migration rate is the third highest in the nation. We are seeing a significant rise in the number of Brit-ish and European buyers. While the U.S. Dollar is positioned weaker than the Euro and the British Pound, purchasers from those countries are seizing the opportunity to realize savings from 25 – 35% in the currency exchange at closing.

Domestic migration also accounts for a dramatic rise in Florida population as it boasts the highest populations of senior citizens in the nation and current studies show that the state is the most popular in the nation as a retirement spot. A recent U.S. Census study predicts that beginning in 2011, the popula-tion of senior citizens will grow faster than the total population in every single US state with a quarter of all Floridians being 65 and over. The year 2011 coincides with the year that the old-est of the baby boomer generation become senior citizens. The largest generation in US history, their presence in the retirement population that ranks Florida the top choice will undoubtedly contribute to a massive rise in senior citizen population.

The final factor that certainly cannot be ignored is the sun-shine. While the northern states are getting pounded with snow storm after snow storm early in the winter season, it only helps to drive people south for some warmer temperatures to enjoy some golf and the beaches.

Sunice®, a longtime expert and leader in the technical out-erwear industry, is dedicated to a unique concept of science and style. This is done by creating innovative design, using du-rable construction, and blending fashion-forward styling while using the latest in technical specialty fabrics.

ANTIGUA OUTERWEAR FOR 2011Antigua’s fall based outerwear is created to function in vari-

ous climates with a trend that focuses on layering. The current opinion is that weather fluctuations throughout the day make it easier to take off-and-add on layers to adjust for comfort and function. Antigua has the options to meet this demand.

To demonstrate, as pieces of the Antigua layering line-up start as base layers they can be combined with wind resistant or water resistant wind shirts and jackets as well as with fuller weight pieces to function against more inclement weather. Antigua has an excellent base layer long sleeve mock called ‘Hero’. Using Antigua’s proprietary Desert Dry moisture man-agement technology, it is constructed with a hyper-micro poly fleeced backing against a super soft interlock face which has enough weight to be worn alone and light enough that it lay-ers remarkably well. Add to that the next tier in style – ‘Suc-ceed’, consisting of a contemporary color block stretch jersey half zip shell with a micro fleece brushed back which can be worn on its own, under a jacket, over a base layer - or both depending on climate and preference. In other words, you are going to stay warm and protected while finishing your round.

To round out Antigua’s outerwear collection offering, styles are developed to function according to climate needs. Anti-gua has a great wind shirt and wind jacket in styles ‘Rendition’ and ‘Highland’. They have created Antech Desert Breeze wind block fabric to serve as a guard against wind while offering warmth. Made with a two-way stretch laminated jersey bond-ed to a water resistant membrane, Rendition and Highland both offer water resistance as well as comfort against the wind and rain. Rendition, styled with contemporary color blocking details, is available as a traditional pullover wind shirt while Highland is designed as a full zip front wind jacket. The stretch aspect of these pieces allows them to be multi functional – on the course and off.

Antigua has a variety of great golf jackets. So, no need to let weather concerns factor into your round as Antigua has the right outerwear to get you into the clubhouse warm, comfort-able and dry.

Calusa Lakes’ beautiful wooded terrain highlights the natural setting of this outstand-ing 18-hole presentation. The spacious course weaves its way through a variety of pine forests and live oak-covered lake banks lending a rare mid-Atlantic feel to the course. A player-friendly course with rolling fairways, fair landing areas, no forced carries and large greens offer the players a unique and enjoyable golfing experience.

Capri Isles is one of the oldest semi-private golf courses in Venice. Located just off I-75 (Exit 193) near the heart of the City of Venice, Capri is perfectly situated for everyone staying in the Sarasota area.

This par 72 “links” style golf course was rebuilt in 2003 with the new greens, fairways, and tees. There are now 4 sets of tees allowing the novice golfer all the way up the pro a fair test of golf.

This “parkland” 27 hole golf course is situated off of exit 195 on I-75 not far from the beaches, Sarasota, and Port Charlotte. Three distinct “nines” meander through trees and over water features. The rolling fairways and undulating greens, provide the player a variety of playing strategies while testing their shot making skills. Where some courses have one signature hole, this club has many.

IMG Worldwide and IMG Academies Launch IMG Leadbetter Junior Golf Tour

Tour to feature elite junior competition and unrivaled opportunities for members

BRADENTON, FL – IMG Academies today announced the creation of the IMG Leadbetter Junior Golf Tour – an elite avenue for junior golfers to compete at some of the nation’s top courses, while gaining invaluable exposure to college- and professional-style golf.

“We designed this Tour to help the growing demand within the junior golf community for high-level events staged on challenging, top-rated courses across the country,” said Sam Zussman, Managing Director of IMG Academies. “Consistent with the mission of IMG Academies, we will measure this Tour’s success by the opportunities it creates for personal growth and overall development, as well as by the level of access to collegiate and professional golf it provides our junior members.”

Each Tour event will span three days (Friday-Sunday), with the majority of tournaments featuring stroke play competition. Jumpstarted by juniors enrolled at the prestigious IMG Leadbetter Golf Academy, the member roster is attracting the nation’s top talent, including two-time Rolex Junior Player of the Year, 15-year-old Victoria Tanco: “This is an exciting opportunity for me to compete on top courses with some of the best junior golfers on the circuit. It’s one more step in helping me toward my dream of joining the LPGA Tour and becoming the best player in the world someday.”

The Tour, which will stage tournaments across the country with a focus on the Southeast and Southwest regions, will receive recognition in the form of Performance Based Entry (PBE) status for all of its events from the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA). This gives the Tour’s junior competitors the additional opportunity to earn their way into prestigious AJGA events throughout the season. The Tour will adopt the AJGA Code of Conduct and Rules Card System, as well as introduce its own Tour Ranking System.

David Leadbetter will work with the Tour’s juniors via clinics and seminars to aid them in their quest to achieve athletic excellence. Leadbetter, one of the world’s top golf instructors, has been instrumental in the growth and development of the game’s most successful players on the PGA TOUR, LPGA Tour, European PGA Tour, and Champions Tour.

Mark Steinberg, IMG Golf’s Global Managing Director, views the Tour as the “missing cog within IMG’s prolific golf event business.” Continued Steinberg, “We have been strengthening our golf business for more than 40 years - The IMG Leadbetter Golf Academy continues to attract top talent, and graduate the next generation of movers and shakers within the golf industry. The IMG Leadbetter Junior Golf Tour will now provide a platform for these and other talented youth to compete and continue their personal growth.”

Mr. Arnold Palmer is Inducted by His Peers into the North Florida PGA Hall of Fame

The North Florida PGA concluded one its best years with Mr. Arnold Palmer’s induction into their Hall of Fame at their annual meeting and awards gala at the Bay Hill Club and Lodge. Although a legend in golf, he has touched and saved many lives not involved in the game with the Arnold Palmer and Winnie Palmer Children’s Hospitals in Orlando. It only seemed fitting that Mr. Palmer

be inducted by his fellow PGA Members of the North Florida Section. Mr. Palmer graciously posed for many photos with his peers and their families, again showing them that he cares. He sat and listened to many stories about how he influenced fellow award winners and inductees.

The North Florida PGA Hall of Fame also inducted Mr. Mark Scallen of the Gator Creek Club in Sarasota for his lifetime dedication to the game of golf. Keith Struble, Director of Golf Operation at Plantation Golf & C.C., was presented with the honor of being named the North Florida PGA Section Professional of the Year. Other award winners included other area golf professionals.

Section Award Winners out of the Southwest Chapter were:• Hall of Fame Inductee: Mark Scallen, Gator Creek Club• Professional of the Year: Keith Struble, Plantation Golf &

Country Club• Horton Smith Award: Jack Binswanger, Village Green Golf Club• Merchandiser of the Year Private: Tim Beckwith, The Oaks Club• Merchandiser of the Year Public: Jeff Boudrie, Legacy Golf Club • Junior Golf Leader: David Windsor, Adaptive Golf Academy

Congratulations to all of the award winners.

Kraig Kann, Arnold Palmer and John Reger, Jr.

Last year, Play Golf Sarasota (PGS) published Bill Tompkins’ annual restaurant reviews for Sarasota. The reader response was both enormous and positive. Although there were some disagreements on some ratings and some questions on why certain restaurants were omitted, all responses expressed appreciation for the information. Many stated that they had just tried one (or more) of the listed restaurants for the first time and enjoyed their dining experience. Several suggested an expanded review to include more casual and specialty restaurants and one that includes Manatee County and Siesta Key.

PGS was happy to oblige. It formed an informal panel of area frequent and informed diners who contributed ratings on numerous area restaurants from all over Manatee and Sarasota counties, except areas south of Osprey, which were not included. For consistency, all contributors were asked to base their ratings on the following criteria: 55% for food selection, quality and preparation, 15% for service, 15% for ambience, 15% for wine selection and bar. Restaurants were broken down into the three categories. Bill Tompkins then consolidated the panel’s input and combined it with his own restaurant review. The restaurants in each grouping are listed in alphabetical order and not in order of preference.

PGS whole-heartedly congratulates every restaurant that finished in the top 100. Manatee and Sarasota counties combined contain over 1000 restaurants, so all listed are in the Top Ten Percent!

Relieving the Pains Associated with GolfBetter Ways to Manage the Aches and Pains of a Frequent Golferby Martha B. Huie, Board Certified Acupuncture Physicianacupunctureanywhere.net

My father always said, “It never

rains on the golf course.” In Virginia

that simply was not true. From April

until November he tried to play on

Sunday afternoons regardless of

what the weatherman and I knew.

We have better weather here

in Florida. Lovers of the game play

more frequently. Now I hear, “It

never hurts when I swing the club.

The next day though, my shoulder

really aches.”

I could not arrange the weather

but as an acupuncture physician,

I can help relieve the pain of

“golfer’s shoulder.” Traditional

Chinese medicine has a long and

impressive history in dealing with

joint and muscle pain caused

by repetitive motion and sports

injuries.

Acupuncture has been recognized by the

National Institute of Health and the World Health

Organization (NIH & WHO) to be effective in the

treatment of a wide variety of painful condi-

tions. They specifically cited shoulder and neck

pain (although golf was not mentioned…).

Other modalities in Chinese medicine are

employed to assist acupuncture in pain relief

and healing. Cupping & Gwa Sha are tech-

niques that release tight muscles, stimulate cir-

culation and

ease inflam-

mation. Herbal

formulas can

provide sub-

stantial results

in relieving

moderate to

severe pain.

I work with

massage ther-

apists in our

office and en-

courage our

patients to en-

joy regular massage for the prevention of sports

injuries, relaxation and well, because, it just feels

great!

I am proud to teach at East West College of

Natural Medicine and the Sarasota School of

Massage Therapy.

Remember to warm up first, wear sun screen

and drink lots of water, because it never rains

on the golf course…

Traditional Chinese Medicine

Often, people assume that Traditional Chinese Medicine, a science encapsulating 2500 years of research and clinical practice, consists simply of acupuncture and herbal teas. “TCM” is actually an ancient holistic medicine that treats the entire person- in all aspects-body, mind and spirit. Harmony and balance are the primary goals of TCM and understandably, one of the first tenets of TCM is preventing illness by making conscious lifestyle choices.

Good health is maintained through a combination of diet, exercise, meditation and massage. When health problems occur, they are treated with food therapy, herbal remedies, acupuncture, and a variety of other modalities such as moxibustion, Tui Na (twee-nah) cupping, electrical stimulation, and Qi Gong (pronounced chee-gung).

Five Element Theory

This time honored theory employs fire, earth, metal, water and wood as aspects of the natural world. In the cycle, fire generates earth, earth generates metal, etc. These elements in Traditional Chinese Medicine are aligned with physiology and the theory is not only a way of viewing the natural order, but also a diagnostic and treatment tool for the physician. The elements also are in relationship to the internal organs, tissues, sense organs, the seasons, certain foods and a host of other groups.

Following a plan of acupuncture, herbs and food therapy on a quarterly basis can boost the immune system and prepare a patient for each season providing protection from such problems as summer colds, the flu season, fatigue and a lack of energy.

Foot Orthotics for Golf: Preventing Pain, Improving Game

For the foot that is not able to function normally due to biomechanical condi-tions such as excessive pronation (rolling in) or supination (rolling out), a state of optimal biomechanics can be achieved through the use of custom orthoses, cus-tom shoe inserts that can be prescribed by a podiatrist. Orthoses not only allow the feet to function as they ought to but can alleviate the predisposition to injury brought on by biomechanical imbalances.

If you already wear orthoses in your street shoes, by all means transfer them to your golf shoes. If you play golf on a regular basis, you may want to invest in a pair of golf orthotics – orthotics pre-scribed specifically for the biomechanics of golf. For optimum control, the unusual function of the feet in golf shoes calls for different orthotic function then might be seen for walking or running.

How Can Acupuncture Help Me?

Acupuncture provides pain relief for many kinds of chronic pain. Back pain, headache, and whiplash from car accidents respond well to acupunc-ture treatment. Sprains or strains from sports injuries can be treated. Acu-puncture reduces the pain of repetitive stress injury, which affects many people working with keyboards or musical in-struments. Painful migraines, cluster headaches, and tension headaches can be treated with acupuncture. Painful joints from arthritis can be greatly re-lieved.

Symptoms of stress also respond very well to acupuncture care. Anxiety, de-pression, and insomnia are relieved, providing support for people going through a hard time, or anyone suf-fering from a busy life. The deep state of relaxation you experience during treatment begins to relieve anxiety and stress from the very first session.

‘Start the year off right. Instead of setting goals that might be daunting or unrealistic, consider a series of mini-goals. How about giving up sweets for 2 weeks? No white flour for 5 days? Cut down from two glasses of wine to one each night? How about exercising for 15 extra minutes each week for a month?

Or, how about making an appoint-ment to see a dietitian to help you set the perfect goals for you? Together we can look at what you are doing now and figure out reasonable ways to transform your health with no suffer-ing. In order to be successful in making changes, you need to understand why you are doing what you are doing, and then you need to find ways to truly en-joy living with the new plan. You can do it! It is the perfect time of year for a fresh start.’

Stressed, Tense, Overworked? You Need a Massage

Playing golf is hard on your muscles and joints. Over time, the muscles can become fatigued, stressed, and prone to injury. Many shoulder, hip, and back injuries have been suffered by players unwilling to recognize the warning signs their body is sending. Stiffness, twinge-like pains, overall aches masked by ibuprofen. Incorporating good massage therapy into your life and game will provide your body the ability to recover faster after a round. Kitty provides wonderful care to her clients.
