A lot has been happening behind the gates of the Longboat Key Club. In fact, a trip along Gulf of Mexico Drive will leave you thinking you have been transported to the Emerald Isles on a sunny day! The courses at LONGBOAT KEY CLUB have undergone a complete transformation over the past 12 months thanks to new ownership, Ocean Properties Hotels and Resorts & Affiliates who purchased the resort in November of 2012.

The Grass IS Greener Behind the Gates of Longboat Key Club!

Just months after the acquisition a series of up-grades and improvements quickly began that have transformed the Longboat Key Club from a pret-ty ocean-front Club to being the premier private Membership Club on the West Coast of Florida. The investment has been significant, and we are proud to debut the newly re-designed courses to the readers of Play Golf Sarasota Magazine.

Maintaining ocean front courses can be challeng-ing and Ocean Properties has spared no expense to find the right solutions. The installation of al-most 500 truckloads of Platinum Paspalum sod over the two courses has produced a luxurious em-erald-green carpet, offering players the pinnacle of appearance and playability. Over 400 tons of high-grade bunker sand has replaced lesser grade bunker sand creating a stellar contrast aestheti-cally, and offering players who find themselves “trapped” a most professional experience playing out of the bunker. To keep the courses fresh and challenging a complete re-design of Links on Long-boat, (formerly the Islandside Course) by original golf course architect, Ron Garl, saw all 18 greens re-designed, taking out almost 60,000 square feet of sand creating longer fairways. Five sets of tees assure every player a shot at a great game. Grass bunkers, collection areas, newly designed smaller green side bunkers all make up the new look at Links on Longboat. Add a state of the art irrigation system and one leaves the course having truly ex-perienced playing a round in paradise!

The Harbourside course received a complete face-lift on the Blue Heron and Red Hawk nines, both being entirely re-carpeted with the Platinum Paspalum sod. Also offering the five tees and new irrigation, this very popular course saw significant enhancements to the landscaping, removing old tree lines and planting native flora to replace high maintenance, non-native plantings. Bordered on the west by the Gulf of Mexico and on the east by Sarasota Bay, Longboat Key Club boasts the only waterfront courses in Sarasota County, the breath-taking views leaving you with only one choice of where to play your next round.

Perfecting your game is as much fun as playing and two distinctive practice areas now allow you to work on your full swing or tone your skills in

Page 17: Play Golf Sarasota 2015 Annual Edition

our short game areas. Retaining a PGA of America trained staff and a Director of Golf, Terry O’Hara, who has earned the status of Master Staff Professional by Callaway Golf, (one of only 50 in the USA), and named a “Top 10 Golf Instructor” by Golf Digest, you are in winning hands when you step foot on any of our courses. A visit to one of our award winning pro shops is just as exhilarating as you find the latest trends in golf-wear for ladies and men and the hottest equipment in the market-place that guarantees you will play your best game ever.

Complementing our course improvements are complete renovations to both the men’s and wom-en’s Clubhouse locker rooms. On all of the cours-es our carts are now outfitted with the latest GPS technology. These upgrades offer access to a golf-ing experience unlike any other private or public course in Florida.

As always, the 5-star service that the Longboat Key Club is renowned for offers you a staff that is atten-tive and well-versed in catering to your every need. No other private membership club offers so many exclusive options all at one beautiful location, be-hind the gates. Your dedicated Membership Team is available to assist you with any and all details that will make your Membership the value of a life-time. Whether a quick tip on game-day, trials of the newest equipment that will keep you playing at the top of your game or concierge services that will book your tee times and lunch reservations, Membership at the Longboat Key Club is your key to the true luxury lifestyle you have always wanted.

The grass really IS greener on the other side – on the other side of the gates that is!

ounded in 1926, Sara Bay Country Club is a private, member-owned golf club designed by legendary architect Don-ald Ross. Located just north of down-town Sarasota and only minutes from the adjacent islands of Longboat Key, Bird Key, Lido Key, as well as Lakewood Ranch, Sara Bay is recognized as one of the most venerable and historic clubs in Florida. When the Club first opened it was known as Whitfield Estates Coun-try Club, and the head golf professional was the flamboyant Tommy “Silver Scot”

Armour. On February 28, 1926, Bobby Jones and Walter Hagen went head to head in their celebrated 72-hole match, which Hagen handily won 11-up. Jones later wrote in his memoirs that this de-feat was the “worst drubbing of my ca-reer”. Throughout the storied history of the Club many USGA and FSGA events have been contested on our classic lay-out, including the 1940 & 1941 Senior PGA Championship. In 2015-2017 the Club will host the LPGA Symetra Tour Guardian Retirement Championship.

The traditional course features the chal-lenge of the Donald Ross signature green complexes, tee markers from 4,748 to 7,021 yards, a walker-friendly atmo-sphere and always superb playing condi-tions. In 2006, the course underwent an extensive and meticulous restoration by Brian Silva, an acknowledged expert on Ross design philosophy. The understat-ed elegance of the Old Florida inspired clubhouse is an inviting retreat to relax with your favorite beverage after golf, or

to savor an expertly prepared evening dinner. The staff is dedicated to the high-est level of service, assuring that each member receives the personal attention they deserve. Members of Sara Bay en-joy the enviable combination of heritage, camaraderie, and an exceptional golfing experience. Brad Benson can find the right loan program to fit your needs - saving you money on a new home purchase

Guaranteed Rate is one of the largest mortgage lenders in the nation.

Who said there’s no jumbo lending?

I have over 10 years of experience in the financial services industry. I pride myself on having an extensive knowledge of the products and programs available to you in this ever changing environment. I will spend the time to learn your short and long term goals to ensure that all of your financial goals are successfully met.

Current as of 10/16/13

Step 1: Meet With A Lender for Pre-Approval The most important step before shopping for a new home is to make sure that you qualify for the financing you need. Completing this process early is necessary and will help you negotiate favorably certain contract items, the most important of which is your “Due Diligence Period.”

THE PRE-APPROVAL PROCESS: Pre-Approval will only take, on average, 30-60 minutes over the phone. Items your lender will need are:

• Two most recent paystubs

• W2 and/or tax return from last 2 years

• Bank statements

We will discuss your income, credit, employment, and financial situation for down payment and assess payment options, interest rates and closing costs.

Step 2: Find a Home and Make an OfferWorking with your real estate professional, find the home you want to make an offer on. Your real estate professional will work closely with your lender to issue a pre-approval letter to submit with your offer and to determine reasonable time frames for the “Due Diligence Period” required in your contract.

Step 3: Contract Accepted The Clock Starts TickingMeet with your lender immediately to sign all loan documents and disclosures to ensure timely underwriting and loan approval before the end of your “Due Diligence Period”. Items your lender may need are:

• A check for any fees required for appraisal, credit reports, flood zone certification or other required fees.

• Copies of current paystubs covering the most recent 30 days of earnings on your job.

• Copies of W-2 forms for the last 2 years.

• If receiving social security or pension income, a copy of the “award” letter indicating the amount to be received.

• Copies of your complete Federal Tax Returns for the most recent 2 years (all schedules and all pages).

• Copies of all assets statements (checking/savings, cd’s, market accounts, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, IRA’s, 401k’s, etc.) for the recent 2 months and all pages to each statement are needed with daily activity and balances.

• For any real estate owned, copies of documentation showing current taxes, insurance, and any HOA/condo dues.

• If divorced or separated, a copy of your complete divorce decree and/or marital separation agreement.

• For a VA Loan, a copy of the veteran’s DD214 (Discharge Papers).

• Job relocations will require a letter from your employer stating your transfer date, job title, and salary information. If “telecommuting” a letter is required indicating this is allowed by the company with no change in job status.

• Special situations may dictate that other information is required, so please communicate well with your mortgage professional at all times.

Step 4: Loan CommitmentOnce your loan has been approved, a formal “Loan Commitment” will be issued. This is the lender’s commitment to lend you money at the agreed upon loan terms. The Loan Commitment may have certain “conditions” attached to it and it is very important that you work quickly with your lender to satisfy these “conditions”.

Step 5: ClosingPrior to closing you will receive a copy of your closing statement detailing your fees and charges and the final amount of money you need to bring to closing. “Certified funds” such as a cashier’s check from the bank made payable to the title company or a wire transfer directly to the title company are required. Make sure to get instructions from the title company or escrow officer in advance to initiate the transfer at least 2 days prior to closing. If you have to make arrangements to move money around from one account to another do not delay. Make sure to leave yourself enough time to secure available funds and to bring photo identification, such as a drivers license.

Step 6:Congratulations, You’re a Homeowner!

NATURE MEETS LUXURY LIVING

Cherished Traditions of Community and Camaraderie

Residents of The Founders Club in Sarasota enjoy a special combination of luxurious living, intimate neighborhoods and an expansive natural setting. The 700-acre community blends enclaves of single-family Estates, Reserve Collection homes and Golf Cottages within a tapestry of native Florida flora, sparkling lakes and 18 holes of championship golf by Robert Trent Jones Jr.

Here, life is more leisurely, removed from the hustle and bustle. A traditional golf and social club community, The Founders Club is a quiet sanctuary with curving streets wrapped around tree-lined vistas. Homesites range from two-thirds to more than one acre, offering

residents scenic views of lakes, nature preserves, wetlands and emerald golf fairways. Yet with all this serenity, The Founders Club is conveniently located within minutes of Florida’s Cultural Coast, including Sarasota’s world-famous Gulf of Mexico beaches, acclaimed local restaurants and shops, and the vibrant arts and cultural venues of downtown Sarasota.

“Time and again, our homeowners tell us how much they enjoy having this natural, secluded enclave, with such ready access to everything the region has to offer,” said Mark Wilson, President and CEO of London Bay Homes, which is designing and building the majority of homes in The Founders Club.

Amenities and activities within the community connect residents with one another – as well as with nature. Miles of meandering boardwalks and walkways dart through untamed nature preserves, brush against lakes and showcase an environment punctuated by palm trees, pines and centuries-old moss-covered oaks.

The Founders Club’s authentic year-round golf experience pays homage to the game’s origins and great Scottish customs. Offering Sarasota’s only traditional caddie program and the opportunity to abandon the golf cart and walk the course, the community honors John Hamilton Gillespie, who traveled from Scotland to Sarasota with a set of golf clubs and the ambition of introducing golf to his adopted homeland.

At the heart of The Founders Club’s active golf and social lifestyle is its 24,000-square-foot Golf Hall. Residents and players often recap their game or meet friends at the club’s popular bar and grille or under the large southern-inspired verandah overlooking the 18th hole and a picturesque hammock of live oaks. The welcoming member-owned club also offers casual and fine dining, a golf pro shop, men’s and women’s locker rooms and lounges, and a state-of-the-art fitness center.

With membership limited to only 275, reserved tee times are not required. Training facilities are dedicated to perfecting one’s game and include state-of-the-art TrackMan radar technology offered through Florida Golf

Page 34: Play Golf Sarasota 2015 Annual Edition

Timeless home designs set within an intimate community centuries in the makingPlanned for just 262 homes, The Founders Club’s genuine reverence for nature is displayed throughout distinct neighborhoods, where London Bay Homes has created inspiring floor plans showcasing the natural surroundings and embracing Florida’s beloved indoor-outdoor lifestyle.

Reserve Collection homes, available on fairway homesites, range from 2,800 to more than 5,000 square feet of interior space and offer dedicated dining rooms, studies and spacious great rooms designed for indoor and outdoor living and entertainment. Home and homesite packages are priced from the $800,000s.

Golf Cottage home and homesite packages are priced from the $750,000s and offer 2,000 to more than 4,000 square feet of living space and are located within walking distance to the golf and social club. Floor plans offer a range of possibilities, including dens, formal living and dining rooms and bonus spaces, ideal as game rooms or personalized retreats.

Estate home and homesite packages are priced from $1 million to more than $5 million and offer a wide range of customization and designer options. Floor plans feature dining and living rooms, studies, expansive alfresco living spaces, and large master suites with walk-in closets and spa-like bathrooms.

Several fully furnished model homes, featuring the award-winning work of Romanza Interior Design, are open for viewing daily and provide a peek inside The Founders Club’s unique lifestyle. London Bay Homes also offers several homes available for immediate occupancy.

Performance Center, plus putting greens and a short game area for practice sessions. Members also enjoy the newly expanded driving range, enhanced chipping areas, Pro V1 golf balls in all of the practice areas, and access to four PGA professionals available for lessons and clinics.

The club offers a fun-filled calendar of fitness and wellness classes, educational and instructional programs, and social gatherings coordinated by a professional staff.

Additional community amenities include two Har-Tru tennis courts, basketball and sand volleyball courts, and a picnic pavilion perfect for gatherings. Resident-initiated clubs cater to a range of interests and hobbies, from cards and cooking to dance and fitness.

“Our goal is to ensure our members can stay as active and busy as they’d like,” said Hugh O’Donnell, General Manager of The Founders Club. “The clubhouse is the epicenter of the social fabric of the community. This is where neighbors gather as friends.”

The Original 18-Holes: Cypress Links• Wide golf corridors offering

a fun experience with over 100 acres of maintained turf for the first 18 holes and a more forgiving experience for the average golfer

• Large lacy-shaped bunkers complimenting expansive undulating fairways in a very traditional course layout

• Twenty lakes within and around the golf course to enhance and beautify the view with less than half in direct play as hazards

The Second 18-Holes: King’s DunesThe 11th hole is a downhill par 3 that features a 20-foot drop from tee to green over a beau-tiful wetland. The entire 18 holes feature dramatic eleva-tion changes, rolling fairways, beautiful lakes, rock walls and an overall look that is unlike most Florida courses. The bunkers are a different style than those on Cypress Links. Other differences include:

• The front nine holes are routed in a parcel heavily treed with mature oaks and pines and forested wet-lands. Clearing was based on hole design with only target areas being totally void of trees

• The back nine’s topography has some strong elevation

changes to create some terrif-ic views and shot potentials• Overall concept is a chal-

lenging golf course that takes the caliber of play up a few notches with the difficulty increasing at each skill level, requiring good club selection and recovery techniques to be played

The Third 18-Holes:Royal Lakes• Royal Lakes was designed

with all skill levels in mind to be forgiving, yet, it is quite challenging for the most skilled players mea-suring 7,320 yards from the Championship tees

• The course can also be very enjoyable for beginner golf-ers from the Par 3 tees mea-suring 1,800 yards. Every hole can be played as a par 3 and it’s a great way to intro-duce golf to any member of the family, young or old

Athletics: Pool, Tennis & FitnessWith such a wonderful way of life, it only makes sense to want to get the most out of it. To help, the club fea-tures an Athletic Center with countless ways to stay fit. The 13,000 square foot fit-ness center includes the lat-est machines by Cybex, rooms for aerobics, pilates, yoga and other classes, two heat-ed outdoor pools (one resort and one Jr. Olympic with eight lap lanes), and massage ther-apy facilities. There are also 18 lighted clay tennis courts.

The Concession Fine Home Collection is positioned ad-jacent to the award-winning golf course designed by Jack Nicklaus and Tony Jacklin. The neighborhoods of The Concession– Lindrick, Birkdale and Nicklaus Manor– are defined by exclusivity and luxury. Within the neigh-borhoods are 236 estate home sites, ranging in size from one-half to over one acre, and are accompanied by lakeside water views or woodland preserves.

The largest of Concession neighborhoods, with 122 lots, is Lindrick. With a special connection to The Concession, it is named for the site of the first Ryder Cup Tony Jacklin attended – not as a player, but as a spectator with his father. The neighborhood features one to one and a half acre home sites which overlook oak preserves and glistening lakes.

Nicklaus Manor is located within the heart of The Concession. This unique cul-de-sac neighborhood consists of 33 homes, each set on a half-acre site.

Opening its gates in December 1987, Black Diamond Ranch was a breath of fresh air amidst the endless string of existing Florida gated communities.

A private golf club community, Black Diamond offers generous homesites atop rolling countryside with wonderful views as far as the eye can see. Black Diamond is the best of both worlds – an escape, worlds apart from the urban jungles of America, but close enough to all the major attractions, entertainment and niceties of city life.

Also, near-by Crystal River, Dunnellon and Brooksville have private airports. At Black Diamond, the golf, rather than the real estate, was given top priority in the planning of the community. Today Black Diamond is Florida’s #1 gated golf community. We invite you to explore this exquisite Florida Gated Community!

Developed by visionary Stan Olsen, Black Diamond was immediately recognized for the quality of the Quarry Course. Committed to creating perfect golf first, and then melding the homesites into the landscape, Olsen created what many have called the finest golf community in Florida. A man of adventure, developer, Stan Olsen, was attracted to this relatively unknown region of Florida by the expansive sand hills, unspoiled coastline, big oaks, tropical vegetation, spring-fed rivers that flow into the near-by Gulf of Mexico and the sunny, temperate climate

– great for year-round golf. After an extensive search, in 1984, Olsen purchased a large piece of property in the quaint town of Lecanto—named for its lovely song birds.

The stunning clubhouse at Black Diamond Ranch sits quietly looking over one of Florida’s top rates golf courses. Nestled among 100 year-old oak trees and towering pines, the newly redesigned clubhouse is the perfect respite after a round of golf with friends or a special dinner with loved ones.

community real estate Black Diamond Ranch is an unrivaled gated golf community stretching across 1,320 acres of unspoiled natural terrain. The dedication to low-density and environmentally friendly development has created a rare enclave that blends harmoniously with its habitat.

It is no wonder that year after year Black Diamond Ranch is ranked as the best golf course community in Florida. The world-class golf courses and the serenity of Lecanto, Florida are the primary motives to move here. However, the community and people are why people stay.

It is a community that says, “Welcome home.” A community that is overwhelmingly peaceful. A community that brings people together.

For over a decade one of the area’s Junior Golf organizations, The First Tee of Sarasota / Manatee, has been working tirelessly to establish a permanent “Home”. Volunteer boards, executive directors, and program coaches have literally turned over every stone searching for a local course or golf facility to provide space not only on the course and practice areas, but also inside the clubhouse with office and classroom space for programming.

For an organization that teaches children ages 6 to 17 life skills and core values including perseverance, it appears their leadership team and volunteer board have led by example. Like many charitable organizations often times they need an unexpected “Angel” to come along that believes in their cause, purpose and mission. In this case, The First Tee, has been blessed with a perfect new opportunity that will assist them in better serving young people throughout the local area.

This opportunity comes from a local golf facility rising from the ashes of the weak economy that nobody could escape. The “Angels” came in the form of Neal & Karen Neilinger. The Neilingers are no strangers to the Sarasota area: Neal having visited his grandparents in the Sarasota and Bradenton area as a child to later vacationing with his wife and then purchasing a home in Longboat Key in the mid 1990`s. Neal became a silent minority investment partner in a real estate venture during the boom days of 2006 at Forest Lakes Golf Course. As most of these stories go, the Forest Lakes project of 2006 involved an extravagant luxury residential development, golf course renovation and new clubhouse that in hind-sight were way too opulent for the area and surrounding communities. As the economy tanked, Forest Lakes, open since the 1950’s, was suddenly closed for business. Nearly 5 years after the closing, Neal and Karen, still had a soft spot for the Forest Lakes community that was devastated by having their golf course suddenly closed. The Neilingers also had made the decision to move to the area more permanently and wanted to establish more business and community interests in Sarasota. That was just the first step in what would certainly prove to be a much more challenging effort to revive a once failed golf course and real estate development project. Although both Neal and Karen always enjoyed a good round of golf, invested

in other property development ventures, and came from the investment banking world, they did not have much experience in redeveloping an 18-hole golf course as part of a major real estate development project. The Neilingers immediately began to seek professional advice, open lines of communication with the Forest Lakes Homeowners Association. In addition, Karen earned her Florida Real Estate Broker`s License to better educate herself on this type of property development and Neal became a Board Member at a local community bank, Sabal Palm Bank.

Early in the process of Neal and Karen rethinking what a new Forest Lakes Golf Club would look like they were introduced to a pair of local PGA Professionals, one of which was a former First Tee volunteer board member. In that meeting they learned what The First Tee does in communities across the country for young kids. Being fans of golf and being philanthropically minded, they had heard of The First Tee, but never really knew the whole story. By the end of that one hour meeting Neal and Karen began to see a vision for their new golf course, but also embraced how they could really have an impact on the community working with the local First Tee of Sarasota / Manatee chapter. After further research into what The First Tee program does for young kids by teaching them Nine Core Values and Nine Healthy Habits to guide them through life, Neal and Karen pledged to do what The First Tee had struggled with for years, give them a “Home”. In the plan to rebuild the Forest Lakes golf course and erect a new clubhouse, The First Tee will have nearly 2,500 square feet of space to house executive offices and most importantly indoor classroom space for programming. The golf course and practice areas will all be suited for enjoyment by regular patrons and for the skills tests that make up the Par, Birdie, Eagle and Ace curriculum of the First Tee program.

Having recently received all the necessary approvals from the Sarasota County Commission, Forest Lakes will soon begin to establish timelines for the new residential development and golf course renovations to begin in 2015. For the first time in over a decade, The First Tee of Sarasota/Manatee can finally see a light at the end of the tunnel with respect to having a place they can call “HOME”.

Often good fortune comes in pairs and this appears to be the case for The First Tee that serves Manatee County as well. Serving Manatee County is a part of the mission for The First Tee, but has been difficult due to the immense size of the County. Recently, a new ownership group has taken over the Suncoast Golf Center and they also believe strongly in The First Tee program. Scott Lamoureaux has been a Board Member of The First Tee for 9 years, a Golf Professional for over 25 years and is a manager from the ownership group that recently acquired the lease rights to the Suncoast Golf Center. The facility features a large natural grass practice tee and a well-manicured 9-hole Par 3 course. The course is a perfect training ground for kids, beginning adults, or skilled players looking to sharpen their short game.

“Suncoast Golf Center provides players of all ages and skill levels a great opportunity to experience golf without all the pressure, time and expense of a traditional round. Our goal is to promote aspects of golf that bring more players and families to the game,” says Scott Lamoureaux. “Playing a shorter course gives new-comers to golf a chance to taste success with the excitement of trying to make a Hole-in-One on every tee shot. They can walk the course quickly, every green is reachable by most players and allows them a chance to chip in or have a one-putt green for a par or birdie which is fun and boosts any players’ confidence. Scoring is all about the short game and this will allow players to improve where it is most critical.”

Having just acquired the property, the new group plans a series of improvements. Guests will soon see new Titleist practice balls, results of advanced maintenance practices, new white sand installed in all bunkers, colorful plantings and landscaping to improve curb-appeal, and most importantly programs for people of all ages to learn golf. One big advantage Suncoast has in the market place is that the facility has lights, so patrons can practice and play at night. For those that have not visited and played, Suncoast is a treat, especially on a nice cool evening with your kids. Go on out and give it a try. You won’t be disappointed!

LINDSEY BERGEON admits that she fell in love with golf the first time she picked up a golf club at age 11 because, “It was so dang hard.” Being raised as an only child by a single mother, she learned the value of hard work and sacrifice at a young age, and applied it immediately to the game of golf.

“My grandfather first

introduced me

to golf when I would

go watch him play,”

says Lindsey.

“And it just snow-

balled from there.”

In the Sarasota summers growing up, Lindsey’s mother would drop her daugh-ter off at the nearby golf course – Bob-by Jones Golf Course – in the morning and pick her up at night after work. Her passion to excel in the game steadily in-creased throughout her high school ca-reer, where she went on to shatter sev-eral high school records at Riverview High School in Sarasota, including lowest scoring average her senior year (33) – a record that still holds today – as well as the lowest nine-hole score in Riverview history (31). She also earned the Saraso-ta Herald Tribune "Women’s Golfer of the Year" award three times in high school, a feat no other local female golfer has yet achieved.

Heavily recruited out of high school, Lindsey elected to stay close to home and her mother, enrolling at Florida Southern College in Lakeland. Her ac-complishments continued to build while at Florida Southern, which included four-time Division II All-American honors, a member of the 2007 national champi-onship team, and individual runner-up honors at the NCAA Division II National Championship in 2006.

Following graduation in 2008, she im-mediately turned professional. She has been competing full-time on the Syme-

tra Tour for the past four years, and is continuing to push forward towards her goal of competing on the LPGA Tour. In 2013, she competed on the CN Canadi-an Women’s Tour and Women’s State Opens throughout the country. While the struggles of the developmental tour circuit can take its toll, one thing is for certain, Lindsey Bergeon is smiling every step of the way.

F or twenty years, audienc-es have enjoyed hearing Nate Ditchfield perform the music of

Broadway and the Big Band era as a member of the renowned Ditchfield Family Singers and the championship barbershop quartet My Three Sons.

Now on Saturday mornings, they’re tuning in to WSRQ Sarasota for Tee It Up with Nate Ditchfield – “the number one source for everything golf on the Suncoast.”

A scratch golfer and renowned long ball hitter, Ditchfield explains, “I grew up with a golf club in my hand and have had a passion for the game for as long as I can remember. I turned pro at the age of 16 and entered the PGA Program as an Assistant Pro at The River Club in Bradenton.”

He gave up his aspirations to play tour golf in order to pursue music with his family, and to raise his own family. He and his wife Regina have four sons who are learning to love the game.

Two years ago, with friend and golfing buddy Troy Larkin, Ditchfield launched the radio show that is quickly becom-ing one of WSRQ’s most popular pro-grams.

“I have three specific goals for every show,” Ditchfield says. “Number one, entertain – if you don’t smile during the show, I haven’t done my job. Num-ber two, inform – provide all the lat-est news and insight from the world of golf including all the major tours (PGA, LPGA, Champions Tour, Web.com Tour, and Symetra Tour), as well as the am-ateur world and local golf scene. And number three – enrich. On the show you’ll hear interviews that give you an inside look at the world of golf from the people who make it so unique! In-terviews with authors, caddies, coach-

es and teachers, volunteers, youth golf organizations, non-profits, sports psy-chologists and more!”

You’d think it might be hard for Ditch-field to name his favorite moment on the show so far, but he doesn’t hesi-tate:

“I’ve had the privilege of interviewing PGA & LPGA tour players, the presi-dent of the USGA, rising stars and NY Times bestselling authors, but the highlight of my career came at our live broadcast from the Concession Cup where I had the opportunity to meet and interview the Golden Bear him-self, Mr. Jack Nicklaus! He was as real and as gracious as anyone I have ever interviewed and it really was a dream come true to meet him!”

In addition to its coverage of the pro-fessional tour, Tee It Up broadcasts live from local tournaments and charity events. Area businesses provide priz-es for contest and giveaways. Each week, Ditchfield reviews local courses and puts up videos and pictures on the show’s Facebook page, www.face-book.com/TeeItUpWithNateDitchfield.

Visitors and seasonal residents say that when they’re out of town, they listen online – it helps them stay con-nected to their favorite golfing com-munity.

As Ditchfield observes, “There’s no place on Earth quite like the Suncoast for those who love the game of golf. Our area has so much to offer them and I’m honored to have the opportu-nity to share it with listeners each and every week!”

Tee It Up With Nate Ditchfield can be heard from 8 – 9AM every Saturday on WSRQ Radio, 1220 AM, 106.9FM and 98.9FM.

BOBBY JONES GOLF CLUB is a 45-hole municipal facility named for the legendary Robert Tyre Jones, Jr., who personally dedicated the facility on Sunday,

February 13, 1927.

The original 18 holes were designed in 1926 by the famed course architect Donald Ross. Nine additional holes were constructed in 1952 and another nine were added in 1967. The John H. Gillespie Executive Course was completed in 1977.

In 1930 Bobby Jones accomplished one of the most amazing feats in sports history, the Grand Slam of Golf. In honor of these championships the British Course front nine is named for his British Amateur victory at St. Andrews and the back nine for his British Open success at Hoylake. The American Course honors Jones’ championships in the U.S. Amateur at Merion and the U.S. Open at Interlachen. Jones is the only golfer to have won all of these major championships in the same year.

The current British Course record is 62 set by a local lad, Paul Azinger, in 1980. Maybe your next round will be the new record. Enjoy and good golfing.

the cradle of golfA frequent question from folks visiting southwest Florida is “Why do so many locals call Sarasota the Cradle of Golf

in the United States?” Read on to find the answer to the Cradle query.

Several communities across the country have laid claim to being the first location to provide a golfing facility. The most popular of these claims comes from Yonkers, New York, where two gentlemen from Dunfermline, Scotland, Robert Lockhart and John Reid, constructed a three hole golfing ground in 1888. These men formed the Apple Tree Gang and are recognized by many golf historians as providing the first golfing ground in America.

Many Sarasotans disagree with the Yonkers claim and local historical records may support their position. In December 1885, John Hamilton Gillespie arrived in the southwest Florida fishing village of Sarasota to oversee the Florida Mortgage and Investment Company for his father, Sir John Gillespie. The younger Gillespie brought his hickory golf sticks with him from Scotland and by May 1886 he had constructed a two hole golfing ground between what is now Main Street and Ringling Boulevard. By 1888 the number of golf holes increased to four and a practice range was added to the mix. This course increased to 9 holes and a clubhouse by 1901 and by 1906 a full 18 hole course was in operation. There it is. Sarasota had a two hole golfing ground a full two years before the Apple Tree Gang had put a cup in the ground in Yonkers, New York. ■

PROPER STRETCHING & EXERCISE CAN IMPROVE YOUR GAME

ANDREW W. MOULTON, M.D.

Fellowship Trained and Board Certified in Orthopedic Spine Surgery

• Non-operative & Minimally Invasive Surgery• Fracture Care• Deformity Correction• Child Scoliosis Expertise

Dr. Moulton received his undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology and Neurophysiology at the University of California in Los Angeles. Subsequently, he received his medical degree from the State University of New York Down State School of Medicine, where he also completed his residency in Orthopedic Surgery. Dr. Moulton followed with a fellowship in Spinal Surgery at New York University/Hospital for Joint Disease.

He was then nominated as a Traveling Fellow by the North American Spine Society, wherein he trained at many of the premier spinal surgery centers around the world. Committed to education, Dr. Moulton previously served as an Assistant Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at New York Medical College where he trained the orthopedic residents and the Hospital for Spinal Surgery spine fellows. He has published several papers in professional journals, is the editor of a textbook of spinal deformity, and has served as faculty for the Cleveland Clinic Review Courses. Dr. Moulton is fluent in Spanish, Japanese and Portuguese.

Golf is a great year round sports activity that provides exercise as well as relaxation. Low back pain, however, is not an uncommon complaint among weekend golf warriors and pro golfers alike. Even many pro golfers like Jack Nicklaus, Phil Michelson and Tiger Woods suffered back pain.

Nine of ten Americans will experience back pain at some point in their life, and, while anti- inflammatories and prescription medications alleviate discomfort, the ideal strategy is to avoid the cause. This does not mean giving up your game!

Some basic tips to avoid injury: • Proper stretching on a regular basis and before each golf round is beneficial to keep

muscles flexible and avoid stiffness. • Always consult your physician prior to any new exercise routine, then incorporate that into

your regular day. • A consultation with a Physical Therapist knowledgeable in Sports Medicine can assist you

in developing your own program. • Bracing, or a corset, may help support your core while you build strength. • Hot or cold wrap application can help either boost blood flow to a sore or painful area, or,

impede pain transmission to the brain … use what feels best.

A revolution occurred in the sport of golf when pros recognized the importance of a structured workout to build core strength. Your golf swing relies on the total body so your exercise routine and warm-ups should replicate the movements used in your game. It is imperative to work your sagittal plane (walking), your frontal plane (putting), and transverse plane (your swing). Most injuries occur in the transverse plane so proper stretching and building core strength is key to playing long into your senior years. Fore!

108 | playgolfsarasota.com

Page 111: Play Golf Sarasota 2015 Annual Edition

A powerful, effective “ground up” golf swing starts with a stable base upon which the entire swing can be leveraged. The most important, but often overlooked part of this base are the feet and ankles. Overuse injuries and pain in the foot or ankle are common in the avid golfer, and can lead to significant alterations in your swing that affect your game and score. Here are some of our take home tips for foot and ankle care in the golfer.

ROLE OF CALF STRETCHINGTaking the time to adequately maintain calf muscle flexibility can provide significant benefits in reducing or avoiding foot and ankle pain. Excessive tightness in the calf muscles can lead to over-tensioning of the Achilles, plantar fascia, and other structures of the foot and ankle. Try to spend 3-5 minutes per day stretching each calf using the runner’s stretch and take some time to stretch before your round as well.

IMPORTANCE OF WELL FITTING SHOESWhen you are looking for your next pair of golf shoes, make sure you take the time to try them on with the socks you will be wearing on the course. Put on and tie both shoes before you take a few minutes to walk around in them. Make sure that they are comfortable and aren’t applying too much pressure in any part of the foot. A good time to try on shoes is in the afternoon when feet are as swollen as they will be for the day.

VISIT AN ORTHOPEDIC FOOT AND ANKLE SURGEONHeel pain, pain under the balls of the feet, pain in the big toe and pain along the inside or outside of the ankle are all common in golfers and athletes in general. If you are experiencing pain that is affecting your game or ability to enjoy yourself on the course, come see us at Sarasota Orthopedic Associates where we are committed to getting you back into the game!

Whatmore Performance Training is a unique training program focused on enhancing Golf performance. The program design includes a systematic approach combining optimal movement, mobility, stability, strength, power, and recovery to enhance overall performance.

We are proud to announce that WPT will be opening a brand new state of the art facility in October 2014 located in Braden-ton FL. The new facility is a fully functional strength and con-ditioning studio, equipped with everything needed to help our highly trained fitness professionals help athletes find their most efficient bodies.

Here at WPT, we take each athlete through a fully comprehen-sive screening process; the screening process includes a hip as-sessment and a functional movement assessment that is cur-rently being used by the Titleist Performance Institute. First we isolate the weak links through a movement screening. Then test function, and then move to skill. Gross movement screens iden-tify faulty stability patterns and altered mobility. We then cor-relate the limitations they have in their bodies to swing faults. (Sway, slide, over the top, etc.)

For example, one of the assessments that we use is called an “overhead deep squat.” The Overhead Deep Squat is one of the most informative tests you can perform on a golfer. The deep squat portion is used to asses’ bilateral symmetrical mobility of the hips knees and ankles. This test also assesses bilateral sym-metrical mobility of the shoulders as well as the thoracic spine when you combine the dowel overhead. Titleist Performance In-stitute has found several correlations between this test and the golf swing through research. If a golfer is unable to perform a full deep squat with their heels on the ground, it is almost impossi-ble to maintain posture during the downswing. We usually see these golfers thrust their lower bodies towards the golf ball and raise their torsos up during the downswing, (early extension) this is usually due to either tightness in the calf muscles and / or lack of pelvic stability due to weakness in the core. The loss of posture is usually due to limitations in mobility of the lat muscles and thoracic spines. When golfers are present with limitations, we take the client through Corrective exercise progressions to make them more efficient in the golf swing.

As you can see, having an efficient movement in your body has a direct effect on how you will perform your golf swing. We use to have to spend 30 minutes persuading golfers on how import-ant fitness is in golf. Now we don’t have to, because all of the players on the PGA tour are doing that for us.

Trauma Care... It’s About Time.

Brian Kimbrell, MD joined the Blake Trauma Team in August of 2010. Dr. Kimbrell came to us from St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard, California where he served as the Medical Director of Surgical Critical Care. Since joining the team, he has been spearheading a wide range of efforts for this $2.5 million project, including recruiting, developing trauma protocols, construction planning, and training staff.

Lynne Grief, PhD, RN joined our team as the Vice President of Trauma Services in December of 2010. Her career has focused on the care of the Emergency Department patient—in clinical, educational, and administrative roles. She has many years of experience in Level I and Level II trauma centers.

Blake Medical Center is a designated Level II Trauma Center. For trauma patients who live south of Tampa Bay, every second counts. Studies show the sooner patients get to a designated trauma center, the better their chance for survival. For their families,

there are no bridges to cross to be by their sides during treatment and recovery. They can stay in their community and receive the support they need. We’ve always offered advanced care in our Emergency Room. Now with exceptional trauma-trained staff

and the emergency response power of EMS, it really is time for trauma care that is close to home.

While we hope that you never have the need to visit our Trauma Center as a patient, we are proud that we can offer such a vital service to our community. If at any point, you or someone you love experiences an injury that may be traumatic, please, call 911 immediately.

What is Trauma?Trauma is a serious injury or shock to the body. It is caused by a physical force, such as vio-lence or an accident. The injury may be com-plicated by psychiatric, behavioral, and social factors. This can cause the disability to be greater than just physical injuries. This condi-tion almost always requires care from skilled healthcare professionals.

What is a Trauma center?A Trauma Center is a facility that is equipped, staffed and trained to handle Trauma patients. Trauma protocols require that a board-certified trauma surgeon is on duty at all times. Special-ty surgeons are also part of the team including ear, nose and throat, plastic, spine, orthopedic and ophthalmic physicians. Pediatric physi-cians, obstetricians and neonatologists are on staff to care for pregnant women and children who may also be trauma patients.

Launching the trauma center improved acute care services throughout Blake Medical Center. Trauma care demands a seamless transition to all aspects of care including the Emergency Room, Surgical Services and Radiology ser-vices such as CT scans. Faster turnaround is demanded for all impacted areas of the hos-pital.

The Trauma Center at Blake Medical Center is led by Brian Kimbrell, MD and Lynne Grief, PhD, RN.

building a higher level of careBlake’s $16 million trauma investment includ-ed the construction and outfitting of two trau-ma resuscitation rooms, which are connected by a central trauma command center within the ER at Blake. We completed construction of a ramp from our existing helipad into the new trauma area in August of 2011. In addition, we designated and fenced off a second helicopter landing (parking) zone in our parking lot. This space is used to park a helicopter, whenever a second helicopter needs to land with a second patient.

Formalization of our care to critically injured patients into a designated Level II Trauma Cen-ter continues to improve the quality of care for all of the patients that we serve, much like our focused efforts regarding Stroke and STEMI Alerts have done for those patients.

If you are like most golfers, you would like more distance, better control and more endurance in your game. In addition, if you want to keep playing for a long time, you want to prevent the common repetitive motion injuries from swinging the club. How many times have you completed your round only to feel like you’ve been beaten up? The good news is that research has shown that you can improve your game and prevent fatigue and injuries by balancing the foundation of your body. Most acute and chronic injuries are traced to a breakdown in the kinetic chain. All your body parts are interconnected, with one part affecting another. Your body’s kinetic chain is never more important than in the golf swing where repeatability and consistency dictate your success or failure. During the golf swing, your entire body goes through a sequential movement cycle that consists of five distinct phases that are essential for consistent impact with the golf ball. Phase one is your set-up where it is essential to be balanced and stable. Phase two is the back swing where your body weight slightly shifts to your back leg. Phase two is the transition when your feet “grab the ground”, then the downswing and finally to a balanced follow-though. The most essential component in consistently impacting the golf ball is to be able to have repeatability in the swing.

If you have foot issues such as plantar fasciitis, weak arches, over pronation or any other previous injury to your ankles or knees, chances are that foot imbalances are negatively affecting the repeatability in your swing. Stabilizing Orthotics can be the key to give you an advantage over your playing partners. Research published in the Journal of Manipulative Therapeutics has shown that customized Stabilizing Orthotics pro-vides many benefits including:

• 100% of players felt they had good support in their shoes• 79% said their feet felt “less tired”• 71% felt their balance was improved• 38% reported shooting a lower golf score

Proven to Improve Your Golf Game• Increases club head velocity 3-5 mph• Helps wearer hit golf ball 9-15 yards farther• Improves your body’s alignment• Reduces your fatigue

of a burger and including it IN the burger. His brother (Matty Matt) loved them and wanted to help out. Their Mom (Pink) jumped in on the action too.

After a few years of farmers markets and food truck events, they decided to open a restaurant (this place). With lots of help from friends, family, and the Good Lord above,
