Background

1 The Year End Report summarizes the Building Divisions activities including building permits construction value of permits issued revenues and inspection and zoning services activities for the year

2 Summaries of the major commercial industrial and institutional projects and residential builder activity are also provided

3 Highlights of 2011 include

HV

bull The City of Brampton is again in the top 10 cities in Canada in the construction value of permits issued

bull Significant developments commenced in 2011 include - 13 new or upgrades to industrial facilities with a construction value

in excess of $1M each

- 26 new commercial buildings with a construction value in excess of $1M each including 2 new hotelconvention centres and 7 new banksfinancial services locations

- 6 new schools and 5 major upgrades to existing educational facilities

4 A complete listing of major construction projects commenced in 2011 is provided in the attached Year End Report

Current Situation

In addition to the delivery of plans review and inspection services within the legislated mandatory time frames the Building Divisions primary focus is quality of service and service delivery including

1 Ensuring that technical changes to the Building Code initiated by the province are effectively communicated to the customer and successfully integrated into the enforcement program

2 Focusing program development in the area of how services are delivered including utilizing technology to provide the customer with immediate access to the status of permits and inspections Initial pilot projects have also demonstrated the customer desire to apply for and obtain permits on-line

Corporate Implications

1 The improving economy and recent amendments to the Building By-law have provided a stable revenue stream from building permits to support the current program as well as initiatives for the improvement of the administration and enforcement of the Building Code Act in the City of Brampton

Conclusion

1 The Year End Report provides a summary of enforcement and administration activities for the past year and reflects the improving economy The use of technology to improve service delivery is a primary focus of the Building Division

Current Situation

In addition to the delivery of plans review and inspection services within the legislated mandatory time frames the Building Divisions primary focus is quality of service and service delivery including

1 Ensuring that technical changes to the Building Code initiated by the province are effectively communicated to the customer and successfully integrated into the enforcement program

2 Focusing program development in the area of how services are delivered including utilizing technology to provide the customer with immediate access to the status of permits and inspections Initial pilot projects have also demonstrated the customer desire to apply for and obtain permits on-line

Corporate Implications

1 The improving economy and recent amendments to the Building By-law have provided a stable revenue stream from building permits to support the current program as well as initiatives for the improvement of the administration and enforcement of the Building Code Act in the City of Brampton

Conclusion

1 The Year End Report provides a summary of enforcement and administration activities for the past year and reflects the improving economy The use of technology to improve service delivery is a primary focus of the Building Division
