Legend has it, that the inhabitants found an odiong &local term for arrow) struc to a tree/thus, the place was called Inodiongan, meaning struc by an arrow, which later

metamorphosed to Odiongan.

0istorically, Odiongan, as of most of Tablas Island, was first settled by

migrant 1egrito and Mangyan tribes from the +anay Island to south and Mindoro

Island respectiely. This was followed shortly by Onhan-speaing settlers from +anay. Around

!"!(, a group of *antoanon-speaing people settled in the area in search of a place moresuitable for agriculture. 0oweer, the settlement founded by these *antoanons were destroyed

and pillaged by Muslim pirates. In !"'(, another attempt was made by a different group of

*antoanons/ this time, they constructed a fort or cota which protected the settlement from

attacs and natural calamities. In !"##, the settlement was officially designated by

the Spanish colonial authorities as a pueblo or town. 2hen the +hilippine 3eolution broe

out in !"4$, the town 5oined the cause of the reolutionaries led by Tomas iedacan.

6uring the American colonial period in the +hilippines, Odiongan faced a number ofcatastrophes7 a cholera epidemic in !4(8 illed much of the town9s population, a

strong typhoon lashed the town in !4(", and famine struc the town in !4!'. 0oweer, the

perseerance and determination of the townsfol led to the town9s continuous e:istence.

In !4'(, the town became the seat of the special municipality of Tablas, created by irtue of

;ommonwealth Act 1o. #"! &authored by ;ongressman Leonardo estin), which coered the

entire island. It remained so throughout the <apanese occupation of the +hilippines from !4'!-!4'#. 6uring that time, Odiongan was chosen as the head=uarters of the resistance

moement in the proince, under the leadership of Lt. ;ol. >nri=ue <urado. On ' September

!4'?, a <apanese gunboat shelled the town to force the guerrillas out of hiding. This was

followed the following month by a landing of <apanese forces from +anay, which massacred

people in the arious towns of Tablas, 3omblon, and Sibuyan, including Odiongan.

On 8$ May !4'$, the special municipality of Tablas was abolished by 3epublic Act 1o. ?".

The following year, Odiongan was restored to its original 5urisdiction as municipality in the

 proince of 3omblon.

Buildings are the most pronounced elements of urban design - they shape and articulate space by

forming the street walls of the city. Well designed buildings and groups of buildings work together to

create a sense of place.

#reat public spaces are the living room of the city - the place where people come together

to en$oy the city and each other. %ublic spaces make high &uality life in the city possible

Streets are the connections between spaces and places( as well as being spaces

themselves. They are defined by their physical dimension and character as well as the si'e(

scale( and character of the buildings that line them. Streets range from grand avenues such

as the )hamps-+lysees in %aris to small( intimate pedestrian streets. The pattern of the

street network is part of what defines a city and what makes each city uni&ue.

Transport systems connect the parts of cities and help shape them( and enable movement

throughout the city. They include road( rail( bicycle( and pedestrian networks( and

together form the total movement system of a city. The balance of these various transport

systems is what helps define the &uality and character of cities( and makes them either

friendly or hostile to pedestrians. The best cities are the ones that elevate the eperience of

the pedestrian while minimi'ing the dominance of the private automobile.

The landscape is the green part of the city that weaves throughout - in the form of urban

parks( street trees( plants( flowers( and water in many forms. The landscape helps define

the character and beauty of a city and creates soft( contrasting spaces and

elements.
