Auburn Gear is your reliable source for a variety of powertransfer products. This catalog features the Model 8 family ofPower Wheel ® Planetary Gear Drives. Other models of PowerWheels are also available; for a complete offering, contactAuburn Gear.

We also offer planetary gear kits, conventional and spinresistant differentials and ring and pinion sets. We offer youservices for design, engineering, prototype support and full test-ing and production capabilities. Product applications includeaccess, agricultural, automotive, construction, forestry, industrialand marine. Auburn Gear offers you quality and reliability backedby more than 50 years of experience.

Greater Design FlexibilityPower Wheel® planetary drives allow greater flexibility than

conventional power train systems and often eliminate the need forcomponents such as drive shafts, axles and chain drives. Themany models and styles offered meet a wide range of mobile andindustrial application requirements. Single, double and triplereduction ratios can be furnished. In addition, they can be sup-plied with a variety of motor mounts and inputs which allow themto be used with most makes of hydraulic motors.

High Efficiency and Compact DesignProviding 94 to 98% power transfer efficiency, Power Wheel®

planetary drives are significantly more efficient than many othertypes of drives, including differential design planetaries. Therugged, compact design of these drives saves space and pro-vides for long service life.

All models can be furnished with parking brakes. Auburn Gearhas designed integral parking brakes in Models 5, 6, 6B, 7, 8 , 8Band 9. These units provide a very compact planetary drive/parking brake package which is particularly useful in applicationswhere space is limited.

Responsive PerformancePower Wheel® drives deliver the power you require for smooth

operation and precise control. These units are also fully revers-ible. Reverse power is easily obtained by reversing rotation of theinput. For vehicle applications, the positive traction provided byindividually powered wheels results in superior maneuverabilityand improved ground clearance than conventional drive systems.

PISTON:Improved design for superior life at higher pressures

FRICTION DISCS:“Heavy Duty Graphitic Paper” for wet sump applications.Characteristics: Superior energy capability, high and stable coefficient of friction and smooth engagement.

GENERAL A2 SERIES DATA:1. Maximum operating pressure is 3,000 psi (206.4 Bar). Pressure spikes or surges not to exceed

3,500 psi (240.8 Bar). Surge pressure in excess of 3,500 psi (240.8 Bar) caused by spikes in thehydraulic system could shorten brake life and must be avoided.

2. Use only SAE grade 8 mounting bolts and torque to 80-90 lb. ft. (108-122 N-m) for motor mounting.

3. PRECAUTION: Bench testing may cause distortion of components or bolt failure. Mounting boltsmust be used for supplemental clamping.

4. Minimum Release Pressure is defined as the hydraulic pressure required to obtain full runningclearance.

5. Cubic Inch Displacement is the volume of oil required to release the brake piston:1.0 in3 (16.4cc) for a new brake and 2.0 in3 (32.8cc) for a worn brake pack - SAE B, B1, B4, B5 ;0.7 in3 (11.5cc) for a new brake and 1.6 in3 (26.2cc) for a worn brake pack - SAE C, C4, C5.

FRICTION DISCS:“Heavy Duty Graphitic Paper” for wet sump applications.Characteristics: Superior energy capability, high and stable coefficient of friction and smooth engagement.

GENERAL A2 SERIES DATA:1. Maximum operating pressure is 3,000 psi (206.4 Bar). Pressure spikes or surges not to exceed

3,500 psi (240.8 Bar). Surge pressure in excess of 3,500 psi (240.8 Bar) caused by spikes in thehydraulic system could shorten brake life and must be avoided.

2. Use only SAE grade 8 mounting bolts and torque to 80-90 lb. ft. (108-122 N-m) for motor mounting.

3. PRECAUTION: Bench testing may cause distortion of components or bolt failure. Mounting boltsmust be used for supplemental clamping.

4. Minimum Release Pressure is defined as the hydraulic pressure required to obtain full runningclearance.

5. Cubic Inch Displacement is the volume of oil required to release the brake piston:1.0 in3 (16.4cc) for a new brake and 2.0 in3 (32.8cc) for a worn brake pack. - SAE B, B1 ;0.7 in3 (11.5cc) for a new brake and 1.6 in3 (26.2cc) for a worn brake pack - SAE C, C1.

6. For vertical shaft output applications, shaft up or shaft down, please contact Auburn Gear to insureproper brake configuration is specified.

PERFORMANCE FEATURES - MODEL 8 SERIES B VERSUS STANDARD MODEL 8SIMILARITIES:

þ Torque Rating: Both use the same optimized gear geometry and gear material, therefore theyboth are rated at 100,000 lb-in (11,300 Nm) of intermittent output torque.

DIFFERENCES:

þ Bearing Retention: Standard Model 8 uses a snap ring which provides end play/clearance. TheModel 8 Series B uses a bearing nut which provides preload/no clearance. Therefore, the Model 8Series B will provide reduced deflections in the gear box, which will enhance the life of a unit incertain applications.

þ Spindle Material and Heat Treatment: Again, the Model 8 Series B spindle properties differ andare enhanced over the Model 8. These differences allow for increased fatigue life under highimpact and side loading.

þ Bearing Capacity: The Model 8 Series B has greater radial and axial bearing capacity which maybe required in certain applications.

GENERAL A2 SERIES DATA:1. Maximum operating pressure is 3,000 psi (206.4 Bar). Pressure spikes or surges not to exceed

3,500 psi (240.8 Bar). Surge pressure in excess of 3,500 psi (240.8 Bar) caused by spikes in thehydraulic system could shorten brake life and must be avoided.

2. Use only SAE grade 8 mounting bolts and torque to 80-90 lb. ft. (108-122 N-m) for motor mounting.

3. PRECAUTION: Bench testing may cause distortion of components or bolt failure. Mounting boltsmust be used for supplemental clamping.

4. Minimum Release Pressure is defined as the hydraulic pressure required to obtain full runningclearance.

5. Cubic Inch Displacement is the volume of oil required to release the brake piston:1.0 in3 (16.4cc) for a new brake and 2.0 in3 (32.8cc) for a worn brake pack - SAE B, B5 ;0.7 in3 (11.5cc) for a new brake and 1.6 in3 (26.2cc) for a worn brake pack - SAE C, C5.

FRICTION DISCS:“Heavy Duty Graphitic Paper” for wet sump applications.Characteristics: Superior energy capability, high and stable coefficient of friction and smooth engagement.

GENERAL A2 SERIES DATA:1. Maximum operating pressure is 3,000 psi (206.4 Bar). Pressure spikes or surges not to exceed

3,500 psi (240.8 Bar). Surge pressure in excess of 3,500 psi (240.8 Bar) caused by spikes in thehydraulic system could shorten brake life and must be avoided.

2. Use only SAE grade 8 mounting bolts and torque to 80-90 lb. ft. (108-122 N-m) for motor mounting.

3. PRECAUTION: Bench testing may cause distortion of components or bolt failure. Mounting boltsmust be used for supplemental clamping.

4. Minimum Release Pressure is defined as the hydraulic pressure required to obtain full runningclearance.

5. Cubic Inch Displacement is the volume of oil required to release the brake piston:1.0 in3 (16.4cc) for a new brake and 2.0 in3 (32.8cc) for a worn brake pack - SAE B, B1 ;0.7 in3 (11.5cc) for a new brake and 1.6 in3 (26.2cc) for a worn brake pack - SAE C, C1.

FRICTION DISCS:“Heavy Duty Graphitic Paper” for wet sump applications.Characteristics: Superior energy capability, high and stable coefficient of friction and smooth engagement.

GENERAL A2 SERIES DATA:1. Maximum operating pressure is 3,000 psi (206.4 Bar). Pressure spikes or surges not to exceed

3,500 psi (240.8 Bar). Surge pressure in excess of 3,500 psi (240.8 Bar) caused by spikes in thehydraulic system could shorten brake life and must be avoided.

2. Use only SAE grade 8 mounting bolts and torque to 80-90 lb. ft. (108-122 N-m) for motor mounting.

3. PRECAUTION: Bench testing may cause distortion of components or bolt failure. Mounting boltsmust be used for supplemental clamping.

4. Minimum Release Pressure is defined as the hydraulic pressure required to obtain full runningclearance.

5. Cubic Inch Displacement is the volume of oil required to release the brake piston:1.0 in3 (16.4cc) for a new brake and 2.0 in3 (32.8cc) for a worn brake pack. - SAE B, B1 ;0.7 in3 (11.5cc) for a new brake and 1.6 in3 (26.2cc) for a worn brake pack - SAE C, C1.

Boot SealAn optional seal that protects the main oil seal from dirt and other debris. Theboot seal will give extended life on applications operating in extremely muddyor dirty conditions. Boot seals are available on a selective model basis.

Model 8 and Model 8 Series B Other Options

Weldable HubThe hubs are 4140H steel and can be turned down and/or welded for mountingsprockets, pulleys, or other devices. A circular keeper plate secures the hub tothe splined output shaft with two bolts (keeper plate and bolts included).

Quick DisconnectThis optional disconnect is available on all wheel drives. No toolsare needed to disengage or re-engage the drive. The planetarydrive is disengaged with the push of a button. The quick discon-nect eliminates removal of the disconnect cover and externalcontaminates are sealed from the units by internal o-rings and agasket that is sandwiched between the disconnect and planetarycover. The rugged, compact design ensures dependable service.

Guard and Boot Seal SystemA boot seal and metal guard are available with F5 spindle output units only. These canbe ordered separately or together. They function best together. The guard and boot sealsystem are utilized in extremely high grit applications. The guard protects the boot sealfrom contaminants which will ultimately wear the boot seal lip.

Seller warrants to Purchaser that its PowerWheel® planetary gear products are free fromdefects in material and workmanship undernormal use and service for a period of one yearfrom the date the product is shown to have beenplaced into operation by original user or for twoyears from date of shipment from seller’s plant,whichever shall first occur.

Seller’s obligation under this warranty isexpressly limited to the repair or replacement atits option, of the Power Wheel which is returnedwith a written claim of defect f.o.b. seller’sfactory, Auburn, Indiana, U.S.A., and which isdetermined by Seller to be defective in fact.

THIS IS THE SOLE AND ONLY WARRANTYOF SELLER AND NO OTHER WARRANTY ISAPPLICABLE, EITHER EXPRESSED OR IM-PLIED, IN FACT OR BY LAW, INCLUDING ANYWARRANTY AS TO MERCHANTABILITY OR FIT-NESS FOR A PARTICULAR USE OR PURPOSE.

The sole and only remedy in regard to anydefective Power Wheel shall be the repair or re-placement thereof herein provided, and seller shallnot be liable for any consequential, special, inci-dental, or punitive damages, losses or expensesresulting from or caused by any defects.

Power Wheel® Warranty

Warranty Information

1. TypeIn normal applications use an extreme pressure lubricant API-GL-5 approved.AGI recommends SAE 80W, 90, 80W-90 and 85W-90 grades of lube undernormal climate and operating conditions. See chart below. For severe orabnormal applications with special requirements consult either Auburn Gearor a lubricant manufacturer for further assistance.

2. Change IntervalInitial lubrication change after 50 hours of operation. Subsequent changesevery 1000 hours or yearly whichever comes first.

3. Lube TemperatureContinuous operating temperatures of 160°F are allowable. Maximumintermittent temperature recommended is 200°F.

4. Amount of LubeThe unit should be half full when mounted horizontal. Lube levels for othermounts will vary. Consult Auburn Gear for details.

5. Shaft or Spindle Up MountingIf mounting unit vertically with shaft or spindle up, special provisions applyto ensure adequate lubrication of output bearings. Consult Auburn Gear.

Lubrication DataPower Wheel Planetary Drives are shipped without lubricant and must be filled to the proper level prior to start-up.
