We’re going through some tough times. I’m speaking as a member of Leonard Mayzel Ontario Lodge but I’m sure that my words reflect the same with all the other Lodges; Time has caught up to us. Our membership has decreased to below 80 members. Once we were a Lodge of 550 plus. And we were active. Now the only activity is rushing to the bathroom and attending shivas.

Yesterday I attended a shiva of someone I hardly knew but was good friends to a relative. The room was tightly packed with friends and family. This was to be a short shiva because the family lived in Guelph and Denver and the mourning period was being divided among the three cities. Just before

Kaddish, the son of the deceased, who led the prayers asked before reciting Kaddish if anyone wanted to tell a story of the deceased. About ten people told vignettes having to do the deceased and everyone laughed. I found this to be a very moving experience because although deceased, he was spoken as if he was alive and part of the group.

I was not brought up in a religious home. What I have learned has been because of those I mingled with. Life teaches us many lessons. The book of prayers that they used had a segment that I felt echoed my thoughts:

BEFORE THE KADDISH

When cherished ties are broken, and the chain of love is shattered,

only trust and the strength of faith can lighten the heaviness of

the heart. At times, the pain of separation seems more than we can

bear, but love and understanding can help us pass through the

darkness toward the light.

Out of affection the Psalmist learned the law of God. And in truth,

grief is a great teacher, when it sends us back to serve and bless

the living. We learn how to counsel and comfort those who, like

ourselves, are bowed with sorrow. We learn when to keep silence in

their presence, and when a word will assure them of our love and

concern.

Thus, even when they are gone, the departed are with us, moving

is to live as, in their higher moments, they themselves wished to

live. We remember them now, they live in our hearts; they are an

abiding blessing.

Our program, “Unto Every Person There is a Name” is presented to perpetuate the memory of the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust through public recitation of their names, and in this way personalizing the individual tragedy of those who were murdered. B’nai Brith Canada will be holding commemorative events across Canada on MONDAY, APRIL 24, 2017

Instead of conducting the program at 15 Hove, BBC is going to take the program to a Toronto high school. Faigie Libman is participating in the formulation of plans for a round table discussion between the survivors and the students at the school. The students would be invited to participate in the reading of the names as well. Detailed information will be given as soon as the times are finalized We need as many volunteers as possible, and we strongly encourage you to participate in this program.

MORRIS CONQUERS THE POKER TABLE

Morris Dadoun, an 84-year-old Toronto man, will be the oldest competitor at the PokerStars Championship Bahamas event in Nassau, which kicks off Friday. Dadoun has been playing “a friendly game” of poker with friends every week for about four decades. He told CBC Toronto’s Greg Ross that he qualified for the tournament because he takes chances when he plays poker. Dadoun’s other secret for poker success?

“They tell me that I have a poker face, but I don’t know how a poker face is,” Dadoun said.

This volunteer program was a great success for December 2016 and January 2017. Our lodge volunteers took part in the program a total of 11 evenings at Temple Har Zion and St. Luke’s Church during the months of December and January. We were able to provide several hundred pieces of new clothes to the homeless clients. The co-ordinators of the program at both the temple and the church were very thankful for our donations. We also donated 200 Tim Cards as prizes for the fun bingos the clients attended. ANNUAL SUNNYBROOK SHABBAT SERVICES

Leonard Mayzel Lodge/Don Mills Lodge will conduct the Shabbat service in the beautiful facility built by community leaders – to provide a spiritual place where Jewish War Veterans and other fellow Jews could come together to stand before God, united in prayers and to learn from the Holy Books.

Since the shul was built, I have participated in the services on a regular basis. Unfortunately, many have passed on and new residents come in – realizing that for some of them this may be their last opportunity to participate in a formal Shabbat prayer service.

To provide this opportunity is up to us the able-bodied with so much to be grateful for. By providing these services, knowing that these individuals will not be able to give us any retribution or reward is one of the greatest mitzvahs. To them, this was a blessing and may you all be blessed!
