PITTWATER HIGH SCHOOL
BE RESPECTFUL ASPIRE BE RESPONSIBLE
Minister for Education Rob Stokes Supporting our Schools Principal’s Report—Jane Ferris
Our local member Rob Stokes has always been highly supportive of public education and in particular our
school. He has quickly been coming up to speed with his new role of Minister of Education showing a
genuine understanding of the complexity of schools and the challenges we face in delivering quality
education to our young people. The minister was delighted to make time to meet with two of our early
career teachers, Monika Juric and Tristan Goodwin, to understand the demands on our young teachers.
He commented how confident he was in the future of education with such high calibre and motivated
young teachers joining the profession. We are certainly blessed at Pittwater with excellent hardworking
teachers across all faculties and different stages of teaching careers.
Gonski going, going nearly gone!
Rob Stokes and the NSW Liberal Party have always
been an advocate for the full Gonski package.
The funding was projected for a period of six years
2014 to 2019 and was considered a major
investment in our country’s future ensuring more
equitable distribution of funds on a needs basis.
Despite a legal contract being signed between the
commonwealth and states at that time, the
Turnbull government is not honouring this
contracted agreement. In terms of actual funding,
Pittwater High School will receive cuts of $520,126
on what was anticipated over 2018 and 2019.
These funds enable smaller core classes, additional
learning support teachers to assist students,
initiatives such as the Top Quartile, Quicksmart in
numeracy, building the skills and knowledge of teachers through additional professional development
time, purchase of technology infrastructure and support, and improvements to facilities. If you feel this cut
is unfair you are encouraged to contact Jason Falinski Federal Liberal local member to voice your
concerns.
Goodwill amongst all on Multicultural Day
Our students certainly demonstrated goodwill, harmony and respect on
Multicultural Day last Thursday. On our special assembly they listened attentively
to the importance of peace, harmony and respect in our culturally diverse world
at a time when a minority attack others based on creed or colour. We should
never tolerate racism, sexism or homophobia – by looking out for each other in a
positive way is the foundation for continued harmony in our society. The students
were very responsive to Mahboba, a Muslim woman and refugee from
Afghanistan. Her home is now Australia, but she has made it her life work to
ensure opportunities for education for boys and girls in Afghanistan, and
protection for orphans and widows. Education is pivotal to ensure global peace.
At Pittwater High we are supporting Zamankoor High School near Kabul. Through
mufti day coin donations, cake and food stalls and Ms Ferris’ pledge of matching
donations, $3,000 has been raised. This will enable full employment of two
teachers for a year. If you would also like to support our school in Afghanistan,
please donate to Mahboba's Promise

Technology is a wonderful tool for learning. We are pleased that so many of our
students have this tool available at school. Along with the privilege of using
technology comes responsibility. The DEC WiFi prevents access to
inappropriate content, however many students have phone technology
connected to their own WiFi and can access inappropriate content.
No content is to be shared that is inappropriate or offensive. Airdrop is one
example of a sharing service on Mac devices that can be very useful when
used appropriately. All students with a Mac device must turn this option off
unless it is required at a particular point in time to share a specific educational
file.

describes the current big issues. Please take the time to read about these issues
and discuss them with your children. eSafety Issues
CALENDAR - Term 2. Week 6
50 years ago, in 1967 Indigenous Australians were still considered flora and fauna,
or plants and animals. This changed because of the 1967 referendum, where 90%
of Australia voted in favour to change the constitution so it would include
Indigenous Australians in the census. Today, as Australia we are working to
become one, and we are aiming to take the next step together.
By definition, reconciliation means ‘to restore or reunite friendly relations’. Today is
the third day of Reconciliation Week which marks three key events. The
anniversary of the recognition of Indigenous people in the Australian Census, the
first step towards reconciliation. The acknowledgement that Indigenous
Australians are the First People of Australia, the second step towards
reconciliation, the apology to every person of the Stolen Generation, the third
step towards reconciliation.
But we need to take another step, we need to take the next step. The next step
needs to be a treaty to officially recognise Indigenous sovereignty and mend the
relationship between Indigenous and the wider Australia. Reconciliation is not one
event, but something we are continuously working towards. This week is a reason
for celebration, for all people. It means that as a multicultural Australia, we
acknowledge the First Nations People, we live as one, and keep working towards
reconciliation.
National Sorry Day or National Day of Healing is celebrated annually on the 26
May. However, it is not a federal holiday. National Sorry Day was established in
1998 after the Australian Government admitted to removing Indigenous children
from their families during the 20th century. To be sorry, one must possess regret,
guilt and sorrow. National Sorry Day is a day to acknowledge the Stolen
Generations and a day for Australian people to come together, an act needed
to achieve reconciliation.
Our walk towards reconciliation is not finished. We have taken great steps
already; we have begun to fix the issues we started. But we need to go forward,
and continue taking big steps to achieve a cohesive Australian society. We can
all join together, and say “I’m sorry”. Let's take the next step towards
reconciliation.

Reconciliation Week
The Open Girls’ Netball Knockout team played
their round 2 and 3 games up on the central
coast at Gosford on 3 May. After a couple of
weeks of training, the girls were eager and ready
for the day ahead. We arrived to the courts and
the rain had just started to pour. With slippery
courts, the girls jumped on and played their first
game against Freshwater. It took them the first
quarter to find their groove and after that we ran
away with the win. After a short break, and tired
bodies, the girls took to the court for Round 3
against Brisbane Water Secondary College.
Unfortunately, with a few turnovers and errors,
the girls went down 56-45. They fought hard
against a clearly well formed team and
represented the school with pride. With majority of the team being in year 12, it was a
bittersweet ending to their representative school sport career.
The team includes: Tori Larosa, Bianca Raffin, Bethany Pate, Jasmine Laing, Lauren
Trbojevic, Jordyn Hess, Charli Yeats, Chelsea Gallagher, Emily Thomas, Poppy Berridge
and a huge thank you to our umpire Jessica Gudmunson.
On Tuesday 23 May, 26 girls from
years 7-12 attended a rugby league
skills and development day run by
the NRL Game development officers
at Nolans reserve. The morning
consisted three clinics where the girls
learnt how to tackle and land safely,
ball skills and game development.
Games were then played in the
afternoon which saw the girls mixed
in numerous teams with the other
schools to build their development and practice what they learnt in the morning. A
great day was experienced and the girls all benefited from the clinics and enjoyed the
friendly tussles in the afternoon. Next term a round robin competition will commence
which will see the girls play weekly against the local school and further develop their
skills in rugby league.

We now have Lasagne & Mac & Cheese available - please see the specials board for what is on each day. The jaffles (or toasties) are a big hit with the students. We are offering “Create Your Own" if they order before school. There are many options available, the students just need to ask. We have reduced the availability of the Butter Chicken to three days a week to bring that menu item in line with the Healthy Kids Guidelines. We have introduced "Honey Soy Chicken" for the other two days. The sauce is made by Felicity here at the canteen.
Volunteers - Please contact the canteen on 99796968 if you are unable to make it in.
