New Dietary Guidelines New 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans were released earlier this year. While the 2010 guidelines advised us how much to eat of different foods, the updated version is more specific and provides 3 examples of healthy eating plans: a healthy American diet, a Mediterranean-style diet and a Vegetarian diet. These plans suggest eating more vegetables and fruits, grains, fat-free or low-fat dairy products and a variety of proteins including seafood, lean meats, poultry, eggs, beans, nuts, seeds and soy products. The new guidelines recommend limiting added sugars, salt and saturated fat to no more than 10% of your daily calories. Currently, about 50% of added sugars that we consume come from soft drinks, fruit drinks, sweetened coffee or tea, flavored waters and alcoholic beverages. For example, a recent study revealed that those who drink sugary drinks every day tend to put on more deep-belly fat that surrounds vital organs and is linked to Type 2 Diabetes and heart disease. With regard to salt, it is recommended that we consume less than 2300 milligrams per day-a little less than a teaspoon. Higher salt intake, as well as too much saturated fat, can increase the risk for high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke. About a third of our saturated fats come from foods containing cheese or meat such as burgers, tacos, pizza, as well as dairy products. Meal planning, regular trips to the grocery store, checking food labels (specifically for fat, salt and sugar content) and having fresh foods and pantry staples on hand can make it easier to prepare quick and healthy meals and snacks from scratch. For more information and online helpful tips go to: health.gov/dietaryguidelines. Eating healthier can have a direct impact on, among other things, blood pressure, cholesterol levels and heart health as well as helping to avoid certain vitamin deficiencies. Regular check-ups with your primary care physician, along with regular blood work, can provide important information regarding how your diet may be affecting your overall health. The pharmacists and staff at Bloomfield Drug Store are always available to assist you in maintaining the important link between your doctor and your pharmacist and together we can all work towards promoting a healthier you!

Dick Romano Loving Sports and Preserving History, Part II Since 1975 Dick Romano has been recording Bloomfield Sports History by honoring local athletes with plaques in the Pioneer Savings and Loan, now WesBanco, Wall of Fame. There is a story behind Romano, known as “Mr. Sports of Bloomfield”, who played baseball all of his life.• From 1944 to 1958 - was Manager and an active player of the Bloomfield Aces Baseball Club.• 1950 to 1951 - played for Lawrenceville Indians.• In 1954 - managed the Bloomfield Baron’s Baseball team to the Allegheny County League Championship.• 1959 founded the Bloomfield Youth Athletic Association (B.Y.A.A.) starting with four teams and growing to 24 teams, the largest organization in Allegheny County.• 1968 and 1975 – was elected first vice president of the Allegheny Valley Baseball Conference.• 1971 was elected as the first President of the Bloomfield Citizens Council. He served on the Executive Committee and was Athletic Director of Recreation for four years.• 1972 formed six girls’ softball teams sponsored by the Bloomfield Citizens Council. Romano had the first Bloomfield Citizens Council Halloween Parade • In 1975 he founded the Bloomfield Sports Hall of Fame.• He has been President of the B.Y.A.A. and President of the Sports Hall of Fame since their inception and continues to do so.• In 1978 he was named “Mr. Sports of Bloomfield”.

Intertwined in Romano’s active life was formation of six volley ball teams. That league was together for five years and won a championship at the Southside Market House. Along with the late John Giancola, he helped to organize the Bloomfield Colts Football Team. Romano played baseball for 15 years, football for the Biddy A.C.’s, softball, soccer, and track. His numerous awards were from the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, West Penn Hospital, and the prestigious Outstanding Citizens Award from the Post-Gazette Newspaper. Romano also formed teen-age dance groups in Bloomfield for Friday and Saturday nights entertainment. Under his direction an outgrowth of that venture was a singing group known as “The Fabulous Caravells” consisting of Joe Palmiere, Chuck Townsend, Jim Marshall, Frankie Jay, John Kimble, and Bill Chippich, that Romano directed and supervised. They cut two records, “One Little Kiss” and “Twisting Marie”. He retired as a staff member in the District Attorney’s Office in 1991, but actively continues in community service and works with sports and the Sports Hall of Fame League of Bloomfield. As part of the “beating heart of Bloomfield”, Dick Romano, along with his wife Irene, reside in the same home in which they raised their children, Billy, the late Ricky, and Sharon Romano. They will be married 67 years on May 28, 2016. These days their three grandchildren and two great grandchildren are the light of their lives in a home full of beautiful memories.
