Notes From the Chair
I hope that you are enjoying your summer. July for me
is packed with picnic, fireworks, vacation trips to the
beach, and travel with loved ones. I hope that you enjoy
yours and much I as enjoy mine. I know with so much
going on, there is hardly time to think about IEEE.
Although we have meetings and activities year-round,
July is typically a very slow month because of trips and
other commitments. Even though we all have busy
schedules, I wanted to take this time to remind you of
some of the things we have going on, what you should
do, and how you can get involved.
I hope by now you have renewed your IEEE
membership for the year. If you have not, or know of
someone who has not, please take a few minutes and
look at the IEEE Membership and Subscription catalog,
and renew your subscription and join a new society or
affinity group. Remember, during the remaining part of
the year membership dues are reduced 50%, and some
of these groups are even free!
The Pittsburgh Section also has affinity groups which
will have meet-ups (coffee, breakfast, and appetizers)
soon to be scheduled around Pittsburgh and the
surrounding areas this summer. These groups include
the Young Professionals (members who have graduated
within that past ten years), Women in Engineering, and
the Entrepreneur network. Try to reach out and connect
up with one of more of these groups to grow your
personal and professional networks.
Lastly, we are always looking for members who are
interested in taking on leadership positions within the
Pittsburgh section. We have multiple affinity groups
and technical societies that could benefit from new
volunteers, and who could also help you benefit
personally. If you are interested in these leadership
positions within the Section, please reach out to me and
let me know.
Stay safe, have fun, and remember to try something
new!

Local PES Distinguished Lecturer Traveled to India as a Fulbright
Scholar
In May/June, local IEEE Senior Member and PES Distinguished Lecturer Dr. Kalyan Sen traveled to
India on an assignment as a Fulbright Scholar – a program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State.
His task was to develop a graduate course on Flexible Alternating Current Transmission Systems
(FACTS) at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar, using a textbook that he has coauthored.
He also delivered a lecture, titled “SMART Power Flow Controllers for Smart Grid Applications” at
Youngstown State University on June 15. This lecture will be presented again at a live webinar on
August 4, 2017. For free registration, please click on the following weblink:

The subject matter is well described in his book, titled “Introduction to FACTS Controllers: Theory,
Modeling, and Applications,” IEEE Press and John Wiley & Sons, 2009. The details of the book can be
found at the publisher’s website at: http://as.wiley.com/WileyCDA/Section/id-
302477.html?query=Kalyan+K.+Sen. The book is now published in Chinese and English paperback
editions in China and India, respectively.

Pitt Student Branch to host Student Activities Conference in April
2018
The University of Pittsburgh IEEE Student Branch was recently selected to host the IEEE Region 2
Student Activities Conference in April 2018. Approximately 300 students from across the region
annually attend. There will be future announcements regarding opportunities to participate in, volunteer
for, or sponsor the conference.
Local IAS Prominent Lecturer’s Trip to Europe
In June, IAS Prominent Lecturer Dave Vaglia gave lectures in Sarajevo and Tuzla, Bosnia and
Herzegovina, Zagreb, Croatia and attended an IAS Executive Board meeting in Milan, Italy.
The first lecture was given at the University of Sarajevo. The topic was “Nuclear Energy Today and the
Future, What in the World is going on?” The second lecture was given at the University of Tuzla. The
topic was “Nuclear Energy and what happened at Fukushima.” The third lecture was given at the
University of Zagreb. The topic was “Electrical Generation, What are the options”.
After the lectures, Dave attended a session with the IAS Executive Board that was meeting in Milan,
Italy. The topic discussed was a request for the IAS to support a committee on nuclear applications.

Local IAS Distinguished Lecturer’s Trip to Xanthi, Greece
IEEE Region 2 Industry Applications Society (IAS) Distinguished Lecturer Suresh Channarasappa, consulting engineer at Westinghouse Electric Company, was invited to participate in 2nd Region 8 Mediterranean Student Branch Chapter Workshop. The workshop was held in May 2017 at the Democritus University of Thrace, Xanthi, Greece. The meeting welcome and opening remarks were given by the Advisor of Democritus University of Thrace (IEEE Greece Section), Prof. Athanasios Karlis, on Saturday morning. Following the opening remarks, the Head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of Democritus University of Thrace, Prof. Ioannis Boutalis presented the research and educational activities of the Department. Prof. Ioannis Pratikakis (Membership Development Chair) presented the activities of IEEE Greece Section. Mr. Suresh Channarasappa made two presentations. The first presentation, entitled “Update on Nuclear Power,” provided an excellent overview of the status of electricity generating nuclear power plants around the world. It also covered the different nuclear power plant designs in relation to recent nuclear incidents and the impacts those incidents have had on the industry. The second technical presentation, entitled “Seismic qualification of safety and non-safety related equipment in Nuclear Power Plants,” covered the applicable industry and regulatory requirements for seismic qualification, which include type testing, analysis, experience and combined analysis and testing.
The workshop featured technical presentations by. Dr. J. Marcos Alonso, Professor at the University of Oviedo, Spain on “Led Lightings and Drivers”, Mr. David B. Durocher, past President of IAS, on “A look forward in Energy Conversion Technologies following 50 Years of History in IEEE’s Industry Applications Society”, and Mr. Dimosthenis Peftitsis, Associate Professor at Norwegian University of Science and Technology on “Performance improvements of power electronic converters, using advanced power semiconductors”. The Workshop also included the presentations from Student Branch Chapters representing Democritus University of Thrace, Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BUTE), “La Sapienza University, Instituto Superior Técnico (ITS), University of Oviedo IAS/PELS/PES , Ecole Nationale d´Ingenieurs de Sfax (ENIS), and “University of Strathclyde. Dr. Peter Magyar, IAS Chapters and Membership Department Chair, gave a short overview about the chapter and membership activities of the IEEE IAS. Following the workshop, the meeting participants visited the Archangeliotissa Monastery and Avdira Museum.
