Business Challenge & Objectives
Business Challenge:
From a merger, Swisscom had inherited an ERP system and 15-year-old Data Warehouse (DW) landscape, the latter being characterized by complicated architectures and several third-party applications. Swisscom wanted to make it easier to use these warehouses for financial close operations. But Swisscom also had other Business and IT challenges to resolve with the new central enterprise wide SAP data warehouse: Due to the lack of real-time information, some key processes, such as precise planning of product deliveries from manufacturers to Swisscom shops was not possible. And Swisscom’s IT was struggling with data source interfaces that were expensive to maintain, a dependence on specific individuals and dated reporting and analytics software, to just name a few.
So rather than just consolidating its enterprise wide SAP DW landscape, Swisscom set out to completely rethink its approach and architecture to data management and analytics to be able to keep up with the fast-moving pace and constantly changing environment of the ICT industry and to support new business opportunities and models based on near real-time insights.
Objectives:
The objective of Swisscom’s multi-phase project called OneBI was to transform its separated DWs and reporting systems into a central, enterprise wide modern data and analytics platform that serves as a single source of truth for financial data with insights based on near real-time data, predictive and machine learning algorithms, a modern user experience with flexible reporting and dashboarding capabilities - while being fully compatible with its current and future operational and big data systems. To this end, Swisscom set out to leverage SAP’s innovations in the area of data warehouse, data management and analytics.

Project / Use Case Details
1. In 2015, set up a data governance framework to provide a standard set of implementation pattern & processes and
support data warehouse maintainability. This was crucial for the new DW landscape to adhere to the mandatory high
data security and privacy standards of the Swiss Government, which are comparable to GDPR.
2. Gathered requirements for +250 existing use cases and designed a new single source of truth for financial data.
After two pilots, Swisscom aimed to replace the existing DWs in a Big Bang approach consisting of 25 sub-projects
without a fall-back solution as several ERP systems had to be merged simultaneously. To minimize project risk,
Swisscom enlisted the support of its Human Centered Design team to define a standardized (industrialized) agile
implementation approach.
3. In a first step, Swisscom merged three DW into a single DW running BW on HANA covering finance and controlling
data as well as all other SAP ERP processes while ensuring regulatory compliance for data access and interfaces.
Swisscom has a multitenant installation of SAP HANA, with HR data residing in a separate tenant for security
reasons. The new DW also supports hybrid modelling capabilities and real-time data provisioning and paved the
way to the planned conversion to SAP BW/4HANA. OneBI went live on January 1st, 2017 with 250 use cases.
4. In 2018, Swisscom completed the first conversion from SAP BW 7.50 to SAP BW/4HANA worldwide, assisted by
SAP’s Analytics and HANA Competence Center. This move further improved IT operations with simpler data
modelling, reliability of data uploads, easier source connections and smarter integration with SAP and non-SAP data
sources. SAP BW/4HANA also ensures full compatibility with other SAP products being implemented (SAP
S/4HANA, SAP Analytics Cloud) or in use (SAP Ariba, SAP Fieldglass) at Swisscom.
5. Also in 2018, integrated SAP Predictive Analytics on a separate tenant. Partnering with the business, use cases for
Carrier Billing, Cash Management and IT Event Management were successfully launched, immediately resulting in
substantial cost savings, additional insights and better customer service.
Swisscom was awarded Gold by SAP Switzerland in the category “Business transformation” of the SAP Quality Awards
2018, see also this link.
