We Believe in women for their strength, and as impressionable role models for our futures through children. Our Mission is to support single moms through educational scholarships to better the future for themselves and set a good example to their children. We Envision changing single mothers and their children’s lives and set their own paths and individual dreams. There is a growing trend to have children outside of marriage, whereas, it use to be only the poor and minorities women. Today, out of the 12,000,000 million single parents, nearly 10,000,000 are single mothers. 49% of them were never married and 51% come from divorce, separation and widowed. Nearly 39% live at or below the poverty level. With all those facts, single mothers must still spend time with their children, manage the home, work long hard days and have little to no extra time or finances to attend college to better their future and their children’s future. As well, women’s earnings are far less than comparable work of men. About $.78 to a $1 for the same job and less are found in a leadership position. Single mothers often spends over half their income on housing expenses and a third on child care. Surprisingly there are a total of about 2 million single mother students and they have little to no means to contribute financially to their education. HEROES is proud to offer $1000.00 scholarships, awarded annually for tuition and academic expenses to eligible and winning single mother applicants. Scholarships are awarded based on female gender, 17 or older age, marital status of single, divorced, or widowed, be sole supporter, income level, employment, 1 year undergraduate credits with a GPA of 2.5+, and essay response.
