Piggy – before arrival
• Was called “Piggy” at school and he did’t like it.
“I don’t care what they call me,” he said confidentially, so long as they don’t call me what they used to call me in school
• Brought up by an aunt: who owned a sweet shop
“She kept a sweetshop. I used to get ever so many sweets . As many as I liked”
• Father dead … doesn’t know about his mother
Piggy - thoughts about island
• Worried they won’t be rescued
• Realizes that nobody knows where they are
“They’re all dead … Nobody don’t know we’re here. Your dad don’t know, nobody don’t know ----”
Piggy - actions
• Very friendly towards Ralph
• Shows Ralph how to blow the conch
• He can’t swim
• He moved amongst the boys asking their names trying to behave like and adult
Piggy – language
• Not as well spoken as the others
“You told ‘em,” he says to Ralph
Relationship
• Not really accepted by Ralph
• Made fun of by Jack
• Is sympathetic towards the little ones
• Tries to act like a responsible adult
