Piet MONDRIAN

I received my 2014 Calender from the local Council recently. When I opened it, this is what I saw.

I immediately recognised this as another example of the amazing, continuing influence of Piet MONDRIAN who died 70 years ago. Below is one of his paintings - painted 84 years ago.

Dutch painter, Piet Mondrian (1872-1944), was one of the most important artists of the 20th century. He is best known for his stylised, geometric designs of black and white grids filled with bright, primary colours. His abstract designs have had a huge influence on graphic design, architecture, and interior design. His work is still affecting designs in use today.

Below: Mondrian’s abstract paintings using basic colours influenced layout and colour theory in his time, it also influenced advertisers later on. DeSerres is a Canadian art store that used over 600 bottles of paint that recreated a Mondrian on their ad.
