SUMMER 2015

A message from Bill Masterton Chief Executive Officer CEO CORNER

It’s hard to believe that we are already midway through 2015. It has been a great year so

far, for both our community and Piedmont Medical Center. We’ve had the privilege of being involved in a number of great community events throughout York County these past few months, including hosting Healthy Hometown at the SC Strawberry Festival in Fort Mill. We have also celebrated and recognized our amazing staff during National Doctor’s Day (March 30), Nurses Week (May 6-12), Hospital Week (May 10-16) and EMS Week (May 18-24). It’s always a pleasure to have an opportunity to show our appreciation for the members of our PMC family, who are so dedicated to exceptional patient care every day.

Through the year, we earned many other accomplishments: I’m proud to announce that we have been

recognized by our parent company, Tenet Healthcare, as they have named Piedmont Medical Center to their 2015 Circle of Excellence. This honor is given to Tenet hospitals that provided exceptional care and demonstrated high operational and financial performance in 2014, based on metrics such as physician and employee satisfaction scores, clinical quality and performance. We are thrilled to be recognized for all of our hard work over the past year.

We have also been recognized again by The Leapfrog Group for our continued commitment to patient safety by receiving our 4th consecutive Grade “A” on the Hospital Safety Score. The Leapfrog Group is one of the nation’s leading patient safety advocacy organizations, and this grading system scores a hospital’s overall capacity to keep patients safe from preventable harm. Receiving the top grade again is a true testament to how hard we work to provide great care and we are honored to be granted this distinction.

Additionally, we were again given the American Heart Association Gold Plus Achievement Awards for Heart Failure and Stroke, including the Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite designation. I want to sincerely thank our entire staff for helping us to maintain such a high level of excellence each year. These quality awards and recognitions could not be achieved without their hard work and dedication in treating those patients that entrust us with their care.

As our service area grows, we are making strides to expand our service lines and bring new physicians into our network to meet the community need. We’ve added Neurosurgery to our list of specialties, led by fellowship-trained neurosurgeon Dr. Michael Louis Goodman, grown our Cardiothoracic Surgery program with the addition of Dr. Scott Seibel to our staff, and expanded our primary care provider base by welcoming Dr. Brandon Sick and Dr. Michael Curran to Family Medicine Associates in York, and Dr. Mehrdad Yousefian and Lewisville Medical Center in Richburg. We are also proud to welcome the Piedmont West Urgent Care Center in York back to the PMC family. We also brought on 7 new Intensivists to our Critical Care program.

As you may recall, we invested over $20 million to expand and renovate our Emergency Department. In addition to this, we purchased a da Vinci robot for minimally invasive surgery that has been well received by our physicians and patients.

I will be celebrating three years at Piedmont Medical Center this summer, and through my time here, I have been continually impressed by the hard work and dedication of our team. It has been a very busy few months here at PMC. While the awards and recognition we have received certainly reinforces that we are on the right path, we forge ahead knowing that there is more work to be done and that there is always room for improvement. We have great, positive momentum to carry us into the latter half of the year, and we look forward to what the rest of 2015 will bring. Thank you for your continued support of Piedmont Medical Center.

William Masterton, CEO

In emergency situations, every second counts. Our dedicated Piedmont EMS team is York County’s primary emergency services provider and covers approximately 680 square miles with

a fleet of ambulances and quick response vehicles 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Piedmont EMS expects to answer more than 26,000 emergency calls throughout the county in 2015 alone. Busy days for our EMS team can mean lots of mileage on our 20 ambulances.

Thanks to a fleet replacement program, we’ve successfully retired and replaced 4 ambulances that each had more than 300,000 miles! EMS Director Michael Wallace says maintaining a strong ambulance fleet allows PMC to take high quality critical care to patients before they reach the hospital.

The advanced technology in all of our ambulances and the evidenced-based training of our paramedics and EMTs work together to care for people with any condition or circumstance imaginable. Each ambulance is an encrypted wireless hotspot allowing important information about a patient to be sent to physicians in the Emergency Department before the ambulance makes it back to the hospital. The goal is always to reduce suffering, promote healing, and improve outcomes.

People who have previously developed harmful blood clots may get a prescription for a medicine called Coumadin.

Coumadin, also known as warfarin, is an anticoagulant, or “blood thinner,” that causes the blood to become less thick and less likely to clot. Blood clots can cause serious medical problems because they can break into small segments and move to different parts of the body. For example, if a blood clot moves to the brain, it can cause a stroke. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, stroke is one of the leading causes of death in the United States today.

Some patients may need assistance with managing the dosage of Coumadin that they receive, so we established the Coumadin Clinic to help these patients. Our team strives to make every patient who is referred to Coumadin therapy feel confident about their health. Appointments are available 7 days a week for testing and counseling. The PMC Retail Pharmacy, which is located on-site in the hospital, can also fill a Coumadin prescription for $4.00 for a one-month supply. This prescription price applies to those who are in the Coumadin Clinic and patients that are starting on Coumadin for the first time.

“I enjoy working in the Coumadin Clinic because I believe these are the people who want and need the education the most and they appreciate our help,” said Lynne Crusoe, PharmD – Coumadin Clinic Manager.

Piedmont Medical Center is now offering an OUTPATIENT COUMADIN CLINIC.

Piedmont's Intensivist Team – providing 24/7 critical care coverage!

IN THE NEWS

For patients who are admitted to one of our Intensive Care Units (ICU), we have a special team of in-house

physicians specially trained to care for them, known as Intensivists. Intensivists are critical care physicians with special training and experience in treating critically-ill patients. What makes them different than other specialists that treat those who are critically-ill is their ability to provide a comprehensive approach to caring for their patients. Intensivists focus on the whole body, rather than a specific body system.

The Intensivist Team here at Piedmont is especially unique because of the 24/7 critical care coverage they provide. Their duties include taking care of patients on life support and mechanical ventilation, as well as caring for those with life-threatening medical conditions. The role of an Intensivist also requires a great deal of collaboration with other members of the

PMC team. They coordinate the care of seriously-ill patients with surgeons, clinical pharmacists, palliative care, nutrition services, and others. Intensivists also communicate with the friends and family members of their patients.

Describing their role, Dr. Manish Sharma, one of our Intensivists, said, “We are trained to act swiftly and boldly, yet we are gentle and compassionate as we take care of the most critically-ill patients and their families every day. ”

“It’s my job to listen to my patients, as they are the ones who know their bodies the best. There is nothing more gratifying than when a patient of mine is able to return to the activities they love.”

We are honored to welcome several physicians and practices into the PMC Physician Network this summer! As our community continues to grow, so does the need for more primary and urgent care providers, so we have been working to expand our

network. These physicians bring with them years of experience and are committed to providing compassionate, comprehensive healthcare to everyone they have the privilege to serve. We are thrilled to welcome each one of them to our network!

SURVIVOR’S YOGA – mind, body and soul.

CANCER CARE

In healthcare today, cancer care can be multi-faceted, with the list of treatment

and therapy options growing longer all the time. Traditional medical treatments, such as surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, are often supplemented by additional therapies of all varieties that focus on the patient’s overall health and well-being while undergoing treatment. These complementary services allow cancer patients to take an active role in their care, and yoga is growing in popularity as one of these therapies.

The ancient practice of yoga was designed over 5,000 years ago as a means to unite the mind, body and spirit while focusing on posture and breathing. Many people practice yoga today as a form of deep relaxation and a way to center themselves mentally and physically. For cancer patients, practicing yoga can help to improve quality of life and promote wellness through active treatment and survivorship.

Results from a recent study published in the January 2014 edition of the Journal of Clinical Oncology showed that after only 3 months of practicing yoga for 90 minutes, twice a week, participants showed a marked improvement in vitality and reported less fatigue and improved sleep. The women who practiced more frequently saw even greater benefit, including a reduction in inflammation.1

Piedmont is now offering Survivor’s Yoga – a class specifically for cancer patients. All are welcome, whether currently on treatment, have recently completed therapy or a survivor of many years and regardless of the type of cancer. Our yoga instructor, Gayle Stefanelli, is specially trained and experienced in working with people with cancer. Her class focuses on breathing, relaxation, stretching and controlled, gentle movements. She is able to accommodate specific needs or limitations and all skill levels can participate.

A support system is crucial to coping with the physical, mental and emotional toll of cancer.

“There is great value in the support of a group who can understand and relate to what you are going through,”

said Jennifer Barnwell, RN, Piedmont’s Oncology Care Navigator. “That’s why we are committed

to offering multiple opportunities to attend support groups and classes here at

Piedmont, and we are thrilled to add Survivor’s Yoga to that list.”

The class is held weekly at the hospital, and is free to cancer survivors who are within one year

of active treatment and $8 for those survivors more than

one year out of active treatment. A “buddy” or support person can attend as well

for $5. This program is graciously funded

by the Piedmont Medical Center Volunteer Auxiliary, a non-profit

organization. Donations to the program are accepted.

HELPING PATIENTS get back to their daily lives. OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY

When someone has experienced neurological damage from a stroke or accident, or was born with a disability,

it may be a challenge to perform activities of daily living, such as talking on the phone, getting dressed or cooking meals. Occupational therapy can help these individuals retrain the mind and body to be able to perform these tasks.

“We are a rehab profession that helps provide people with the tools for a greater quality of life,” says Bianica Davis, occupational therapist, “Whether you are relearning how to do something after an injury or learning it for the first time, we focus on helping you gain the strength, coordination, and confidence to regain your independence.”

Occupational therapy can serve a wide range of people. Stroke patients, those with spinal cord injuries, people with cognitive defects or disabilities, and people recovering from a sports injury or automobile accident, may be able to regain a higher level of function through dedicated therapy.

Each patient receives an individualized evaluation to help construct a rehab plan specific to that person’s needs and goals. Therapy can include specialized exercises to improve fine motor skills, movement, strength and balance depending on an individual patient’s requirements. It may also include the introduction of adaptive equipment such as reachers or typing tools. The main objective is to resume the ability to care for oneself and return to the activities of daily life.

“Some of our patients may have sustained an injury such as a wrist or shoulder fracture, or recently had a joint replaced. We focus on providing them the skills and exercises to get back to doing what they need to do,” comments Wendy Lesley, occupational therapist. “We want to help our patients regain their confidence and independence so they can get back to the things they enjoy.”
