Pat and Earl Gore, who selected their new main-level living home in Piedmont’s Spring Creek neighborhood, are no different than the one in every eight Americans now over age 65 who desire to age in place in well-appointed, easy-to-access, and energy-efficient homes.

“We love main-level living,” says Pat, adding that they would not go back to a two-story home after enjoying the comfort and convenience that their 2,500 sq. ft. Fairview model provides. The Gores can speak from experience as last year they sold their 6,000 sq. ft., six-bedroom home in Glenmore to downsize to spacious main-level living that has only two steps up from the garage to access the entire first floor level.

With the economy creating a longer on-market time for the Gores’ previous home, the couple found they had plenty of time to “look all over Charlottesville” for their next home. With the Fairview model, they found the perfect choice. The Gores immediately liked the home’s airy and spacious main-level living floor plan, its price point, their ability to make floor plan modifications and select from numerous options, and the helpful and knowledgeable working relationships they found at Piedmont and with its industry partners. Spring Creek’s location, 20 minutes from Charlottesville and close to family members and grandchildren in Richmond and Northern Virginia, was another highly desirable factor.

“Our home was built in 90 days, just like Piedmont promised,” says Earl, who also notes that their new home was completed right on budget. Piedmont delivered the magic words, Earl says, “on budget and on time.” Another aspect of main-level living has also pleased the Gores as they settle into their new home and neighborhood—their heating and utility bills are half of what they were in their last home.

Piedmont’s Spring Creek neighborhood features a nationally-recognized golf course, but it’s softball that keeps Earl Gore improving his swing these days. As a member of the Charlottesville Retreads, a popular senior softball league, Earl is on the field twice a week, logging in 55 or 60 games a season. After all, Earl is a founding member of the group that started in 2002 and now has about 60 avid players.

The team, which plays other senior league groups, needed official jerseys and caps sporting their sponsor’s name, so Earl made a successful pitch to Piedmont’s Drew Holzwarth. “We think Piedmont will get some mileage out of this,” says Earl as he breaks into a smile.

From a Homeowner’s Viewpoint 17

What features attracted you to the Somerset?Going in, Christie and Steve knew that they wanted a two-story home with a basement, and at least three bedrooms. The couple considered three of Piedmont’s home models and eventually settled on the Somerset. “We were looking for an open floor plan with a large kitch-en,” says Steve, adding that the oth-er models they considered didn’t come as close to their dream home plan.

“The Somerset features a large, open kitchen and living room, four bedrooms, including three with walk-in closets, and an amazing master suite,” says Christie.

The couple also decided to add a screened-in porch for additional

warm weather living space. A stamped-concrete patio outside their walkout basement completed the picture for additional space to relax or entertain.

What made the Piedmont difference?As Steve says, “the Piedmont team really went out of their way to help us build our dream home.” Steve and Christie had specific trade partners and craftspeople outside of the Piedmont network that they wanted to incorporate into the construction of their new home. This did not create a problem at Piedmont for the couple.

“Everyone we worked with at Piedmont went out of their way to make our dream a reality for our family,” says Christie.

Nursing school and a graduate degree program brought Christie Piedmont and Steve Lukasik from Pennsylvania to the Charlottesville area 14 years ago. After living near Scottsville for nine years, the couple decided to find a new home closer to the city of Charlottesville. With a young child to raise and busy careers, lifestyle convenience and access to their jobs were high on the priority list.

Why did you select Spring Creek?As Steve says, the couple had decided they needed more space once their daughter, Sophia, was born, and they both wanted to live in a neighborhood that featured amenities and access.
