    Dr. Seuss

Bartholomew and the Oobleck We read thisstory every year as part of Read AcrossAmerica week... and, of course, make our ownoobleck! If you've never made it, it's aboutequal parts cornstarch and water (feel free toadd green food coloring, or leave it out). It isthe coolest compound since it takes on thecharacteristics of both a liquid and a solid. Thekiddos will want to play with it all day--it's somuch fun!

    Dr. Seuss as LeSig, Theo

We read Ten Apples Up On Top. Students thencolor a picture of a child to match themselves.I print pictures of their faces for theirportrait. Then students draw a number from abag (numbers are 1-10) and they color cut andglue that number of apples "up on top" of theirheads. This makes a darling hall display with thetitle "Kindergarten Has Apples Up On Top." I

also post a color copy of the front cover of thebook.

Finally, we all make a purple purse(even the boys love it!) and add their text-to-self writing inside the purse - along withclipart of 3 shiny quarters and movie starsunglasses. Henkes, KevinI'm planning to read Hooway for Wodney Watby Kevin Henkes. It's about a rat who cannotpronounce his r's. The book gives an opportunityto talk about differences, how we should acceptdifferences in others. I am using it as a lead into the class determining our classroom rules. What does "Being Respectful" look and soundlike? I think it'll be a good jumping off point.

We go outside to theplayground and each student picks a friend. Then we take pictures. When we come inside,we read the book. Then we talk a little aboutwhat is important about friends. I give them apaper that has prompts such as My importantfriend is____, the important thing about myfriend is ___, we like to _____ together, etc. While they are writing, I print out the pictures. They glue these onto the top of their page. Then

they decorate a border around their wholepage. I laminate the pages and let them hangthem in the hall for a few days. When we takethem down, I assemble them into a class bookfor our library. They love looking at books with

Carle, EricThe Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. Afterreading the book and thinking aloud with my

students, I lay present a poster with the daysof the week and laminated drawings of theitems the hungry caterpillar ate. I'll draw astudent's name out of a cup and that child willselect an item and place it on the day thecaterpillar ate it! We're practicing sequencingand retelling at the same time. We do this onceby doing a picture walk through the story andthen they will do it as a class without the book.We then recreate the story, using our own inputas to what the caterpillar will eat. The students

create their own versions of the tale and makebooks to take home. It's so much fun!Sometimes I'll bring in a fruit salad and we'lltalk about what the caterpillar was eating.Lauren LaRae
