Members Only Brickpit Pickleball Bash On Saturday, September 5 a special members only pickleball session was held at the Brickpit Sports Stadium, Thornleigh, 9:00 am – 1:00 pm. 22 PANSW members participated in the session. The session aimed to bring together players with high level skills as a precursor to selection for the next Battle of the Border competition. The BOTB requires high level pickleball skills and the flexibility to play with a variety of team-mates. Accordingly, the session began with four pools of players with each player given the opportunity to play with and against every other player in the pool.

The 16 players with the highest accumulated point scores advanced to the second round of play which saw players paired together at random (names drawn out of a hat).

The PANSW was pleased to see quite a few newer players competing for their first time. This included PE teachers Peter, Jason and Lee from the Central Coast who are introducing pickleball into their schools.

To see lots more photos, CLICK HERE. Thank you to everyone for your participation! See you next time!

The day ended with semi-finals and finals where pairings were again randomly drawn. Hans and Pam (yes, randomly drawn!) emerged victorious against Suz and Mradul. This was Mradul’s first pickleball competition! Promising start to your pickleball career, Mradul!

PICKLEBALL PINGING IN PORT STEPHENS

RIVERWOOD, MORRIS IEMMA INDOOR SPORTS CENTRE

The Riverwood Pickleball Club is currently the smallest pickleball club in NSW. But good things come in small packages. We have an enthusiastic group of skilled pickleball players with enquiries from more players to join us after COVID, plus many visitors. Our venue is very new and directly off the M5. COVID precautions are well implemented.

PICKLEBALL AT FIVE DOCK Pickleball Five Dock is back up and running in a safe and friendly environment at Five Dock Leisure Centre Monday 10am—12pm and Wednesday 8:15am— 10:15 am. You can use the Pickleball Sydney Meetup app or http://www.fdlc.com.au/pickleball for venue, safety and times. Times are also updated on the Pickleball Sydney Facebook calendar.

Mondays have been very popular, with the four courts in operation most weeks. Wednesdays are seeing two to three courts in use.

All levels are catered for and new players are quick to fit into what is a fun and supportive environment. The skill and level of competition continues to improve every week with plenty of friendly rivalries as players learn their opponent's strengths (and weaknesses).

After play, stay for a great drop of coffee, a friendly chat, tales from the day’s play and perhaps some insight for you to use in your next meeting on the court.

PICKLEBALL PARODY

Missing pickleball? Feeling isolated?

If you haven’t seen this pickleball parody of NSW players already, have a look now!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umIX3LMTzns&t=2s

Produced by Tony Morgan;

assistance from Rona Richmond.

In October 2019 a pickleball court was taped onto the floor in a side room at the PCYC Nelson Bay. A group of passionate Over 50s players was quickly established. This has now expanded to two sessions per week with both sessions full to capacity. Playing in the room can be a challenge with its low ceiling and furniture stored on the baseline but we have all managed to improve our game (with support from Tony Morgan) and keep laughing. We are happy to have somewhere local to play.

But changes are on the way . . . PCYC Nelson Bay have applied for funding to install 3 permanent pickleball courts on the existing indoor basketball court. If successful, installation will be in January 2021. All age and Over 50s groups are planned. This could lead to friendly competitions between clubs and organisations. We have also liaised with tennis clubs and other senior organisations to promote pickleball in the area which resulted in this recent article in the local paper. Pickleball is here to stay in the Bay!

TAREE PCYC & SCHOOL PICKLEBALL

Taree PCYC has two pickleball sessions available each week: 9.30 am - 11.30 am Wednesday mornings and 12.00 pm -1.30pm Saturday afternoons. Wednesday mornings are quite popular with about 12-13 regular players ranging in ages from 30s to 80s. We are trying to establish a regular group for Saturdays.

In an exciting development, the local Manning Valley Anglican College has incorporated some fortnightly pickleball classes into the Year 10 curriculum. (PASS classes are like PE classes.)

TWO NEW VENUES FOR NORTHERN BEACHES!

The Northern Beaches Pickleball Association currently has about 75 members and gets new enquiries each week. Their pickleball sessions at the Dee Why PCYC are on Mondays, Tuesdays and Sundays, 9-11 am. In addition, they now have sessions at the Avalon Recreation Centre (indoors) each Saturday morning. Opening September 24, NBPA will have 3 new indoor courts at Beacon Hill with sessions initially on Thursday nights 7-9 pm.

Wait!! There’s more . . . Northern Beaches Council has agreed to mark up 6 outdoor floodlit pickleball courts at a new netball complex in Avalon. It is hoped that this venue will be available before year’s

end. NBPA is growing from 2 regular locations to 4 locations with 18 courts potentially available. The club hopes to have an open day for World Pickleball Day in October where those interested can come along.

For more details about their new venues and more, visit the website of the Northern Beaches Pickleball Association: northernbeachespickleball.org.au/nbpa

LINE CALL RULES

(excerpts from USAPA 2020 Official Rulebook)

Code of Ethics for line calling Pickleball is played according to specific rules. It also requires a code of ethics for line-calling responsibilities when performed by players. The basic elements are:

• The opponent gets the benefit of the doubt on line calls made. Any ball that cannot be called “out” will be considered “in”.

• Players are responsible for calling the lines on their side of the court. • Players should not call a ball “out” when looking across a line unless they can clearly see a space between

the line and the ball as it hits. • In doubles play, if one player calls the ball “out” and the partner calls it “in” then doubt exists and the

team’s call will be ‘in”. • Players may call faults on themselves or line calls to their disadvantage during or after the completion of a

rally. • A player should not question an opponent’s call. • Spectators should not be consulted on any line call. • All “let” or “out” calls must be made promptly or the ball is presumed to still be in play.

Signals for line calls “Out” line calls should be promptly signalled by voice and may include a hand signal:

• “out” ball – outstretched arm pointing in the direction of the out-of-bounds ball path • “in” ball – arms extended parallel to the court with palms down

SOLAR BAT SUNGLASSES The PANSW is proud to promote Solar Bat sunglasses to all pickleball players. Solar Bat sunglasses offer maximum coverage and unhindered vision. They feature a large, frameless profile that enhances peripheral sight and blocks the light from all angles. Feedback from pickleball players who have trialled the sunglasses has been overwhelmingly positive.

Solar Bat Australia offers discounts to all members of PANSW who order online and apply the code PICKLE. Players selected by PANSW to represent New South Wales in competitions will receive an additional discount (with code to be advised). In addition, PANSW receives $15 on each purchase made by PANSW members.

To place orders, go to: solarbataustralia.bigcartel.com.

Enquiries may be directed to the Australian distributor of Solar Bat sunglasses, Lee Taylor at [email protected].

Last year we noticed that Ryde Council was building a three-quarter size basketball court in Morrison Bay Park at the corner of Morrison and Francis Roads. We contacted the project manager and requested markings for a pickleball court. In keeping with council policy of using sporting facilities for multiple sports, the project manager was happy to oblige and in fact marked two courts. This was the birth of “Pickleball in the Park”!

My wife Artemis and I purchased two pickleball nets, balls and spare paddles. We recruited people who were passing by without any difficulty and before we knew it, we had regular games in the mornings. We have also had the support of Marina who started mypickle-ball.com.au and has been able to supply paddles, balls and nets for players to purchase.

We received a lot of support from Roy Maggio, a counsellor in Ryde Council, who strongly supports sports activities. Following his suggestion and that of PANSW, we formed the Ryde Pickleball in the Park Association Inc. Being a club has allowed us to advocate for more outdoor pickleball venues in the Ryde area and to apply for a sports grant. Our website is rydepickleball.com. We also communicate with over 50 players on WhatsApp.

Our pickleball games are free, very social and include all ages and people with various disabilities. As a cardiologist I’m delighted to see the health benefits from pickleball for older people. Our players are delightful and happy to welcome and teach new players. We were fortunate to have Harry Fielding and his wife Adele coach us before returning home to Queensland. Currently we play every morning from 8:00 am—10:30 am except Sundays, but will curtail this as more venues become popular. On Fridays we offer free cakes. Everyone is welcome to join us!

PICKLEBALL AT THE BLACKHEAD TENNIS CLUB

Earlier this year, Blackhead Tennis Club opened its doors to local pickleball players. Despite the short break due to COVID-19, the sport is growing in popularity in this small coastal community.

Currently the courts are open for pickleball 3 times a week (Tuesday afternoons, Thursday and Saturday mornings) with 10 to 14 players consistently attending to play on the two available courts. We are thrilled that the Blackhead Tennis Club will be pursuing a grant to provide additional multipurpose courts in an area currently not in use.

As shown in the photos, Tony Morgan and his son Bailey visited our club and provided a pickleball demonstration on Saturday, August 29th. They then fielded questions from our members, which ranged from choice of footwear to staying out of the kitchen!

TOONGABBIE PICKLEBALL

On Friday, September 18 pickleball in the Parramatta Council area got a special boost from a visit by the Lord Mayor of Parramatta and local Councillors to the Binalong courts in Old Toongabbie. A big thank you to the 19 players who attended this special session and to the Mayor and Councillors for their active engagement.

The Toongabbie Picklers will host a special session on World Pickleball Day, Saturday, October 10th from 10:00—1:00. Experienced players are welcome and are encouraged to bring along someone new to pickleball to have a go. The session is $5 for experienced players and FREE for new players . Please go on MeetUp to register to attend.

Sessions are currently held on Tuesday and Friday mornings 10:30—12:30. For more information about pickle-ball in Toongabbie contact Linda at [email protected] or Jackie Robinson at [email protected].

HORNSBY PCYC PICKLEBALL

After several months of shut-down due to COVIC-19, the PCYC at Hornsby is again operational but on a restricted basis. Pickleball was one of the first activities to resume as it is easier to maintain social distancing compared to some other sports.

Current sessions are on each Tuesday and Thursday morning 10.00am to 12.00noon but unfortunately we are unable to play Sunday afternoons due to competing kids’ sports activities.

Looking at the bigger picture of pickleball expanding to more PCYCs in NSW, there might be an opportunity to introduce pickleball on the Central Coast at the Bateau Bay PCYC. Stay tuned! Peter Kirkwood, [email protected]

NAMBUCCA VALLEY PICKLEBALL

Pickleball continues to grow in the Nambucca Valley. Currently pickleball is played at two venues: Nambucca High School on Monday evenings from 5.30 pm and Scott’s Head tennis courts on Thursday mornings. Monday sessions attract 16+ players while Thursdays attract 6 - 8 players regularly.

The Nambucca Heads Pickleball Club is developing a third venue at the Macksville tennis courts.
