Attendance & Punctuality w/e 9th June 2017

The overall attendance figure for Pickhurst Academy for this period was 95.6%. Congratulations this week goes to Form 5C who achieved the highest attendance at 100%. Fantastic! As the majority of Year 6 were in France this week, we have not taken into account their attendance figures this time. 20 lates were recorded this week. Please note that each child’s attendance and punctuality rate is monitored on a regular basis. If it is seen that a child’s attendance or punctuality is below our expected requirement, then parents will be contacted either by letter or a mutually convenient appointment will be arranged to discuss the situation in order for us to offer support.

Tech Supports Jaeda’s Election as PM in 4W

Last week we held an impromptu election within Form 4W to mirror the national election. Each table elected an MP and they each had to tell the class what their manifesto was (these ranged from free pizza for the emergency services to a financial donation for the NHS). The children then voted, with Jaeda victorious! She won by promising a Lamborghini after graduation for every young person who goes to Uni! After that, we had a press conference where the children took photos and video footage and had selfies with the new PM. This content was then used to create a digital booklet on the iPads. This was great fun, the children learnt a lot about the process and the iPads played a key part in the teaching and learning.

“Queenie”

“Queenie” is a Jacqueline Wilson book that was published in 2013. It is set in 1953 around the time of

Queen Elizabeth’s coronation.

Elsie Kettle lives with her nan in a basement flat - mainly because her mum and dad broke up when

she was little. Her dad disappeared and her mum is a showgirl who is always coming and going. Elsie

is a nan’s girl with all her heart.

But one day disaster strikes and nan is taken to a sanitarium with TB. Then Elsie gets TB as well

and has to be taken to Miltree Orthopaedic Hospital. Can Elsie deal with poisonous patients, nightmare

nurses and having to have a Thomas’s knee bed splint!!!!

What I Liked About “Queenie”

I liked the book because you can feel what Elsie is feeling. If she is sad you feel sad. And if she is

happy you feel happy too. By the end of the book it feels like you’ve known Elsie all your life. I have

kept on reading “Queenie” again and again. I love it!!!!!

Rating

4 and a half stars!!!!!!!

Junior Travel Ambassadors

A massive well done to the JTA children (Oliver R, Leanne and Elena) who have worked hard throughout the year launching competitions and promoting road safety. It has been so nice working with them and seeing their confidence grow, especially when leading their own assemblies. Throughout the year I have had to send off evidence to show the work we do at Pickhurst Academy to promote things such as using less transport to get to school and staying safe when travelling to school. We have done this in a variety of ways, including Walk to School Week, the Big Pedal, competitions to design clothing to be seen at night and a lot more! All of this hard work has paid off as we have been recognised as one of the ‘top teams’ in Bromley! Only six schools in the Bromley area have achieved this, so it is something we are really proud of. As a reward, we will be joining the other Top Teams for a day out. We are really looking forward to this and I will update you on our day out when we have been!

FRIDAY 23rd JUNE - PICK-FEST

The afternoon will start at 2.30pm on the junior playground with each year group performing a musical number - all parents/grandparents/carers are invited to come along and support their children. After the entertainment the children will return to their classrooms to collect their belongings and be dismissed at 3.20pm in the normal way. The afternoon will then continue over on the field with musical entertainment from the Hayes Jazz Band and two very talented solo singers/musicians. There will be bouncy castles, a last man standing game, extreme gaming van, ice cream van, crepes, sweets, prosecco & beer tent, soft drinks and food provided by Nosh van. Bring along your blankets and chairs and enjoy the afternoon - the forecast is looking good! Wristbands Wristbands for unlimited turns on the bouncy castles will be available to buy in the afternoon for £2.50 each. However, we will also be selling these on the playground during the week of Pickfest so avoid the queues and purchase early! PLEASE make sure that your children have socks to bounce on the bouncy castles as the company we hire them from will not let anyone on without socks and we will not be selling them this year! Raffle We are having a Summer Raffle, with first prize of £200 cash and lots of other great prizes. Your child should have brought a book of raffle tickets home with them to sell; please return your money and stubs to the PTA box by Thursday 22nd June with your child’s class clearly marked on the back. The class who sell the most will receive a class treat. We will also have tickets for sale on the afternoon. The draw will take place at 5.45pm. We look forward to seeing you all there for a fun afternoon!
